As someone who’s from Antigua and has family with land and beach houses… this is unnecessarily expensive for the island. However, I’m glad she’s living her dream life and enjoying the island.

For the people saying they're being overcharged for rent, they live in Hodges bay which is a very nice neighbourhood, and its a three bedroom with a pool; they're paying for what they get. Utilities are also very expensive on island. The only thing I would say they pay too much for is food, but they are probably sticking to the American products they're used to which cost more.

They are living in a good neighborhood, a smarter choice would be living in the downsized and paying piece of land and building. I’m from the islands. Living in the islands definitely doesn’t cost that much . Once u own your home. & land. You shouldn’t top even 1k per month usd Unless your trying to live super luxurious

@@Slanghomy what taxes? My family roots is in Anguilla, British West Indies. Which is in the neighborhood of Antigua. There are no personal income taxes, capital gains taxes or estate taxes in the majority of those islands. If you choose to import products like a t.v or furniture as an example then they will charge you a duty tax or if you flying out of the island there is a departure tax. A family making $10K a month, living comfortably spending only $4k a month are doing well. Plus the currency there is Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$), which is pegged to the US$ at 2.70 (although most folks prefer the US$).

@@Slanghomy dude. Do you know any expats? They don't pay taxes. You just have to file your taxes with the U.S government. "Most expats do not pay US expat taxes because of the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and Foreign Tax Credit benefits. However, expats still need to file taxes annually if their gross worldwide income is over the filing threshold". For 2020, they can exclude up to $107K in Foreign Earned Income. On top of that whatever credits or deductions they qualify for. If you research it, you will consistently find the majority of expats do not pay taxes to America.

Most Americans are like that, they consume much more than they really need or happily over pay for things and when you point it out to them, they still don't mind because back home they know they'd be paying 3 or 5 times the amount they just over paid. From what she herself said you could tell she didn't need that "American insurance company" with their evac whatever, most average to big local insurance companies will be willing to provide that at a much cheaper rate but I'm sure because they had "American" on Thier name, they used their being an American company to upsell her. Americans seem to think everything expensive is automatically better or anything American is automatically better so when you add the two American and more expensive it's the American dream In my countries average normal schools usually seek the right to use American in their names then proceed to increase school fees and accept payments in USD knowing very well it'll attract the mostly the Americans who will assume it's better solely because it has American in its name, and it must feel like home because they accept payments in USD. They are an interesting bunch tho and they are loved by sellers in tourist locations across the world I'm sure

As someone who is from a big city, New York City to be exact, the price they’re spending for a family of 5 is great! They’re living on a little less than half of their income. They have been able to save and pay off credit cards. I think renting is the best option for them at this time unless they want to get into real estate and investment properties. If they decide that Antigua is their forever home, then they can purchase some land and a house.

I visited Antigua in 2012, and one thing I remember is that the sidewalks had big gaping three foot holes you could loose a dog or child in. I probably wasn't in an area with $2500 rent, though.

That price would've been expensive for a local but for them, it's fine because their combined income is over 10gran (I still can't get over people disclosing those personal stuff on the island). I can already see the effects of the saltwater on their locs. Lovely family

@@duncanbug It’s not ivy league. Still, it’s a top tier school and is only made more expensive when you’re coming from out of state. Imo any of the other UCs would’ve been better.

I follow a fb page about Antigua and it looks like a heaven on Earth! Living there must be a dream (if you like beaches and nature), good for them. I’m surprised that they only saved 10k in three years living there though, especially on high income like that. I know that they have student and credit card debt but 10k is not much.

The average American can't cover a $400 emergency with cash. Plus, although they didn't mention this specifically, I'm sure they had relocation expenses that the husbands employer didn't cover. So all things considered, $10k is pretty good, especially with a family.

With over $80k in student loans that would have been the case anyway. Best for them to live in place w/ lower cost of living, MUCH safer, access to fresh non-GMO food and beaches...lifestyle is important.

Whats the difference between an expat and an immigrant?
@todrapayne
@todrapayne 2 жыл бұрын
It's economic privilege and perception that separates the two. For instance, I left the US and lived in London for six months. I was considered an expat. Often expats are seeking tax havens and lower cost of living, while having a higher quality of life (obviously,I didn't get a lower cost of living in London; but I was also an expat in Albania for one year and lived on 1/3 of what it had costs me in L.A.). On the other hand, if I'd left a economically challenged, politically unstable, perhaps war torn country in hopes of living permanently in London for better job opportunities and safety, I'd be considered an immigrant. But at the end of the day, both words mean people choosing to leave their home countries to live abroad.
