Living On $227K A Year In London, England | Millennial Money

Imani Change, 28, lives in London, England and earns $227,000 a year as a senior operations manager for a tech company. Imani moved from Baltimore to London last September and adjusted to a different cost of living. Her rent is much more expensive, but her groceries are significantly cheaper.
This is the latest installment of Millennial Money, which profiles people across the U.S. and details how they earn and spend their money.

Imani Change had a lifelong goal to live overseas. But she never imagined that within six months of moving to London from Baltimore, Maryland, in September 2019, she would find herself living and working abroad amid a pandemic.
For her, one of the hardest things about the coronavirus pandemic is being far away from loved ones, she tells CNBC Make It. It's been even harder with travel restrictions limiting visits.
"It definitely has transformed a lot of our connections with Facetime calls, Zoom happy hours … just finding remote ways to connect with folks," says Change.
Nevertheless, she says it was a "dream come true" when a work opportunity - along with a promotion and a generous salary - gave the 28-year-old the chance to move to London. She's worked for the U.S.-based tech company for more than five years, but for a long time she thought a role like senior operations manager was unattainable as a Black woman.
"I didn't really see people who looked like me doing this work," Change says. "And so, it was really just figuring out how do I get there? How do I grow with not only my role but as a leader? And how do I help other people also move into these spaces that maybe they don't see a lot of people who look like them?"
Now she's one of the youngest senior operations managers for her company in Europe, earning around $227,000 a year. She is paid both a base salary and restricted stock units, so the payout varies depending on the value of the stock and the amount of stock she is awarded each year.

People have pointed out that there is some degree of obfuscation with this video in terms of what is her base salary, restricted stock units, and whether or not that is being applied to investments. To assume that her investment portfolio is composed of RSU/investment compensation would mean her base salary is around $100k pretax. Which is more than half of her initially reported income. Does this matter? I don't know, but it is common for people to oversell how well they are doing in the thing that think they are doing well on. The lack of transparency though coming from someone interested in other people who actively invest through methods like DCA make me view this video with some skepticism knowing how much senior managers usually make in the United States.

KC Knows Best it’s called total compensation. Companies with this payment structure consider it as cash income because you can cash out stocks when they are awarded annually.

If you look at her monthly breakdown approx 50% of her income is in investments, which I assume is the stocks. Then there’s some taxes; $3.5k (which aren’t really broken down), so I think her take home is more like $6k per month (£4.7k). So not a bad salary, but quite a difference from $220k+ per year.

it is my mums still has a house in west london not far from shepherds bush that my sisters still live in and the street has all changed its all rich russians and doctors/bankers. we are probably the only ones on the street that have lived here for 30 years everyone else sold up and moved. but the good news is crime has gone down since all the old estates got redeveloped into private new builds

Imani is simply amazing! I got the chance to converse with her when she was working in Manchester at my workplace. I always thought she was way older than me, so you can imagine my shock chancing on this video and seeing she was 28 in 2020. This is just because she was such in a high position in my workplace that I admired her, being a Black Woman, and being the only Black Woman I had come across in such a high position within the company we worked for. After talking to her, I was very much motivated to do more to achieve my goals. I really wish her all the best and I hope people learn something from this video. I learned a lot! ☺

As a Londoner; there’s a number of things that stick out here. She’s chosen to live in Hampstead which admittedly is a very expensive area, but she’s also chosen to live on her own and not share to keep costs down. My friends share a two bed flat in Hampstead for £1600 a month. I have never heard of anyone paying a full years rent up front; maybe some high end rentals would ask you to do this. Normal people do not have £40k to spend upfront on rent, that’s a house deposit for most Londoners. There are plenty of 1 bed flats in London in more reasonable areas for £800-£1000 pcm, Hampstead is for millionaires! I’ve glassdoored her salary for her role and it’s between £85-£120k, which does not equate to $227k USD. I think her stock options must be factored hugely in to this. Irrespective, she’s earning more than 99% of people in London. This is more than most doctors and only investment bankers and those in finance or ceos would earn more.

Advice from someone who is much more successful: do your stuff quietly; as you rise in socio-economic status don't feel you have to change your vehicle/home everytime you get a promotion; when you set your goals DO NOT tell anyone of your friends & especially your work colleagues. Also lets just say you're gonna do an MBA or some higher edu course, DO NOT tell anyone until you've completed and that certificate has already been received and submitted to your HR dept (do not even tell your direct managers) The only time they should know is when a vacancy within the firm arises & you apply. Envy & politics will crush you before you know it and you'll end up like the "other crabs in a barrel". These are my rules as a senior in one of the world largest financial institution. Try avoid getting burnt to learn if you've already been given gd advice my friend.

If anything being black is an advantage at Amazon, it's well known they have affirmative action in place combined with their forced company politics it's likely she was also hired to boost diversity stats. People say similar for software engineers in big tech, but each and everyone of them are brining in millions for those companies a year. It's a profitable industry and Amazon is at the forefront.

This country went the wrong route and some of us are trying to fix it ONE PERSON at a time. Ultimately, the school system needs to teach DEBT, INVESTING and INTERVIEWING skills...but, they don't do that and actually do the opposite...they teach you HOW to acquire life changing DEBT (i.e. College) and they believe that it is worth it in the market - that the ROI is there...which is simply not the case.

She does clarify on her own channel that the landlord never asked for this much upfront this was her own offer so she could out bid the UK residents who had already been offered the place. With about 700k people who lost their jobs and thousands more still on furlough I really wish they did someone with the average salary in London as a majority of actual Londoners do not make this especially that London is a very expensive place to live and many live in shared houses. I think Metro's series 'what I rent' or 'how I save' series is very realistic of the UK experience at her age.

As a Londoner, it’s really interesting hearing her perspective and experience as an American in London. It looks like she’s living in Hampstead which is zone 2/3 with respect to the London Underground and is a pretty pricey area of London. There are cheaper pockets around the capital but you end up having to compromise on transport/amenities or aesthetic and Hampstead is gorgeous. I’m not surprised at London coming across as more expensive than Baltimore! It’s definitely an overpriced market here. Supply and demand I guess!

Quite a few (not all) of my international friends who work over here in London have had to put up between 6-18 months rent upfront because they don’t have a job or study history in the U.K. and so are seen as a greater risk. They are willing to put money up to secure accommodation, so I wasn’t surprised at that in this video & a quick google search will show it’s fairly common practice (albeit ott, in my opinion).
