Speaking of the Johnny comic, Jhonen Vasquez, its creator, is VERY critical of fans who only enjoy the superficial things rather than the deeper writing he did. Because if Johnny was written for the wrong audience, we'd get UrbanSpook's The Painter instead.

Idk if he IS nowadays, but he definetly used to be like that. You can see it in the way he writes the dialogue on the comic itself. I doubt he takes himself so seriously nowadays, though. Lol

@@BoogusBuddyNot really. JtHM is an odd duck. On the one hand, yes, he did do the edgier things because he thought it was amusing and entertaining for the sake of itself, a sort of outlet for the darker Id. But at the same time, it is also true that Jhonen was trying to say something with the comic and story. This is exactly why Mmy/Jimmy exists, because some fans just "didn't get" the story, and only liked it for the violence, gore and aesthetic, and who sometimes came across as if they were idolizing violence and killing/killers. He has stated that the dialogue does make him cringe sometimes, but not because of its content. It makes him cringe because it's basically the first thing he ever did, and would have written said dialogue much differently but with the same intent and sentiment behind the words. But no, don't mistake Johnny as a placeholder or avatar for Jhonen. There are similarities, and he did pull from himself as all writers do for their main characters. Don't forget the one mini comic from JTHM where he made fun of himself with his ridiculous portrayal of his everyday life (because people were making a very similar mistake to your assertion and thinking that Johnny was just an outlet or mouthpiece for him and his ideas. Like Johnny himself says, he isn't the hero of the story, he's the villain.)
@magustobias8827

Now that's not true lol. JtHM is probably my favorite singular story, comic or otherwise. I've been a diehard fan ever since I first read it. Urbanspook's The Painter is an interesting series (not necessarily the series itself, but moreso the conversations that it has started). I can't speak about or for the creator of it on either side of the fence, but I will say that shock horror for the sake of shock is just as legitimate as any other genre or subgenre of horror, and I think it's absolutely laughable that some people out there hold such a moral authoritarian angle with horror/analog horror and what kinds of content is "too far" or "too much" when the whole point of horror is to scare, disturb, gross-out, or sicken the audience; exploitation horror, cosmic horror, body horror, gorefests, horror-comedies, grimdark, theatrical/high-end, low budget B-movie, classic movie monsters, psychological thriller, and so on. Everything is allowed, or nothing is, as far as I'm concerned. Can it still be criticized as being shock value for shock value's sake? Or that it's low-effort for the simple presentation? If true, then sure. I'm not a fan of that series; initially it really intrigued me, and I was very interested to see what unfolded, but with the whole hoopla and some alleged things the creator has said (sorry not sorry, I can't trust a lot of what's put out there as evidence when it comes to screen caps from randos online when so much of it can be doctored or falsified. I just know that it's a given by now that he behaves and talks controversially at times at the very least), has definitely soured my interest. At this point, I just wanna know what all will be revealed or explained for curiosity's sake. (But I'll 1 million % agree that JthM is both better written and better presented than Urbanspook in every regard by a wide margin.) Anyway, rant over lol.

@@magustobias8827 That's real interesting, thanks! Although, the difference between Nny and Jhonen did make me confused at first. When I first started reading, I thought he was, like you said, some kind of mouthpiece or persona for young Jhonen to say some wild shit. As the comic goes on, however, it's much easier to settle the difference, specially later on LOL Anyways thanksssss

Almost as soon as that dub for I Feel Sick began, I could only imagine Sickness as a stand-in for either an editor that wants to steal this artist’s autonomy similar to The Wall, _which seems to fit Vasquez’s works the most,_ or how I saw it, as Demotivation, since it constantly uses the opposite of “It won’t finish itself, you know,” instead suggesting you do something else for your more “impulsive wants,” instead of training your mind and active creativity.

As a former edgy goth kid who loved these comics; It's so wild seeing stuff like I Feel Sick, JTHM and Squee being analyzed again and looked at as real works of art instead of...well just stuff an edgy 13-year old goth kid would love. Even if my tastes are more to the tune of Beksinski and Barlowe now, without Jhonen's work I'd never have learned about any of the darker side of visual arts. As I was watching this, I saw myself in both main characters discussed (Johnny and Devi). One of them was an example of someone who fell upon a dark path with no way of coming back from it, and the other managed to break free. Both characters were put under extreme circumstances by forces neither of them could ever truly comprehend, and I found that relatable. I applaud Jhonen Vasquez for creating two characters that were essentially born from the same stitch, and was therefore able to make both the worst and best outcomes for them both.

So like, JTHM is one of a genre I like to call "revenge comics" where the author vents their frustrations through art, and Johnny being a sort of self insert vessel for those (Johnny-Jhonen). To that extent Happy Noodle Boy to Johnny is like Johnny to Jhonen, it's a parody of the very comic you are reading. That's why it's so frequently featured.

Despite the story of JTHM and I Feel Sick, and the supernatural aspects. I think what Devi got from Johnny was more than just a supernatural entity/demon. It could be psychological, due to the trauma of being attacked by someone she thought she loved and getting away, after finding out she may have been the sole survivor out of all the others hes murdered. Along with the fact that when she reported what had happened, it wasnt taken seriously

Me and my mom both have schizophrenia, and my mom once described it to me as your creativity turning against you. Your imagination takes your mind hostage and you lose control of who you are. Being medicated restores your sanity, but in my case also robbed me of my creativity. I can’t think of anything to draw or write and don’t really feel like myself this way either. Given that, the ending of JTHM is relatable for me. Sometimes there is no way to revert to the person you used to be and the best you can hope for is a simple existence.

In regards to Happy Noodle Boy, I always thought it was a reflection of how dissatisfied Nny is about the comics he's making and not meant to be as hilarious as the other segments. Like you mention, Nny can only produce Happy Noodle Boy instead of his paintings and because of that, I don't think it's supposed to be all that funny, it's intentionally something low-effort to represent Nny's creative decline and current madness. I find Happy Noodle Boy entertaining (maybe because I'm part of the homeless insane demographic) when the segments come up but they're the weakest of the filler, though I think that's on purpose. Very great analysis, by the way. I re-read JtHM quite often and I should really re-read I Feel Sick and Squee's Wonderful Big Giant Book of Unspeakable Horrors as often. JtHM is a huge inspiration to me since I first read it in 8th grade, always glad to see people giving it and the extended universe around it recognition.

I think Johnny was always crazy from what I remember, I think even his rational side (the bunny doll) mentions that he always did grizzly acts but ever since he moved into that house somethings been taking control of his insanity, quoting Johnny here when he says "It's like I've relinquished control of my insanity" or something like that. Johnny did like killing until he moved into that house and he highkey realized that his thoughts and needs aren't his own anymore. hence why when he "dies" there actually WAS something in the house, some monstrosity. And I had an interesting theory (to me atleast) that when Johnny visited heaven, alongside the cosmic(?)force behind the wall that made him realize that he's absolutely out of his mind he legit didn't like killing just out of being insane. Since when his fan shows up to the door, someone he would TOTALLY kill if this had been like idk weeks earlier maybe. He actually goes out of his way to just warn him and tell him to leave until his fan tells him something that was probably foreshadowed in like the first chapter idk. then he feels disgusted that before he kills the fan the fan says "we're just a like" Johnny doesn't deny that and just says "I dont like myself much". To me that was a clear indicator he legit doesn't like killing for nothing anymore like he was looking in a mirror from the past, And all of this happened right after being IN HEAVEN. So I had a little fun in thinking holy, did Heaven and awareness of an outer force in his mind kind of sets him onto the straighter path to sanity? thanks to that goated dub in the video (I never read the rest of I feel sick) I see what's going on now. JTHM is like what happens when Sick goes unnoticed and it kind of? takes over. So now Im sure that before he moved in he wasn't a murderer because he wasn't influenced by Sick. he moves in, slowly realizes he can't really draw anymore which he thinks is art block. but nothings really talking to him yet so he doesn't realize somethings wrong and I guess he falls into insanity. And now im 100% sure when he went to heaven it might have fried whatever link Sick had to Johnny by like 70% because what kind of artist is 100% sane.

This is just something I wanted to point out and while I'm not saying murder is alright but I can understand why Johnny got upset when he was assumed to have sexually assaulted someone. The difference between murder and sexual assault is that one has to continue to live in that broken state. Metaphorically speaking, part of them had died and constantly live in that cycle of dread as they are forced to relive that trauma. At least in death they'd be spared from that pain if that makes sense. With death there is an end, can't say the same with sexual assault and I think even Johnny sees that.

It tickles me so to see new young folks discovering JV. As an edgy artist and teen goth in the early-mid 2000s JTHM was my SHIT. I even borrowed the collected edition from a girl I knew that worked at Hot Topic, for max 2000s teen mallgothiness. I've long since aged out of the edge, but looking back always fills me with a certain warmth.

As much as I liked these comics, I never understood how anyone saw them and said “let’s give this guy a children’s show”

Good review. Exactly why i loved this comic. It was gory and gnarly but it had meaning and it was done tastefully. The art style is incredible. Vasquez made a piece of art and unfortunately it got a bad rep.

I think the voice of murdoc from the gorillaz rock band would be the perfect voice for Johnny.

When I first read JTHM I interpreted it as a creative depression, not wanting to work on your projects cause they don’t come out how you want them to, or how you expect them to so you stop working on them, and it nags at you till you actually start doing it but then you feel bad cause you’re not doing it cause you want to but need to. some people actually get addicted to creative expression and they need a fix but it also has a negative impact on the overall outcome due to wanting the endorphins from completing a project which they’ll try and rush their way through for the hit but it’s rare and it’s developed over an extended period. Anyway if you make art be sure to enjoy the process and not overthink it lest it leave you in ruins.

I had jthm and squee and filler bunny in middle school because I was a huge invader zim fan. The only one I liked was squee though. I have my jonny and filler bunny copies to the first person that expressed interest. I held onto squee for a decade and got pretty bummed when it had to be tossed because it got water damaged.

Holy shit, seeing someone bring up JTHM in 2024 just unlocked memories I haven't thought about in years. These comics were hugely influential to me during my angry teenager years.

I grew up loving Jhonens comics, when zim was announced me & my brother lost our friggin minds we were so excited. when I was 11 I met Jhonen at the Toronto fan expo convention, got a bunch of autographs, it was a great time. As an adult, i still appreciate his work's influence on me; but reading the comics now I find them much less enjoyable than I had previously. I'm not a big fan of Jhonen himself or his personality, and certainly his fanbase is pretty pretentious & annoying. But I'll always fondly remember being a young goth kid, years before the hot topic Gir craze, years before Zim, feeling like I had discovered what I thought at the time was an amazing work of art. It was a major part of my childhood & created in me a love for comics.

Jhonen went to school at one of my rival high schools, knowing the references from where his experiences come from every page is relatable. The overlook of the SJ valley from a hilltop in JTHM or even the late night Taco Bell jokes; everything hits. Short one page insanity, intercut by barely drawn ideas to full blown gothic horror. 🤘🏾long live Squee

I grew up on dark/edgy content so JTHM and I Feel Sick is right up my alley. It’s this corporate Marvel and DC stuff that makes me sick, along with the safe-edgy “groundbreaking” schlock they’re showing on tv for kids. And for adults for that matter
