Given this, the Caspian sea is not a sea because it is not a division of the ocean, rather a completely separate body of water only connected by rivers to the ocean. The Mediterranean and Black seas are seas because they are connected to the ocean via straits, not rivers. The important takeaway is that 1. seas are more or less part of the ocean, 2. seas are connected to the broader ocean by straits, not rivers, 3. that any sea can also connect to another sea to make it a sea. Take the example of the Mediterranean that makes the Black sea a sea.

The amount of people I see here that are confused as to the Caspian Sea being a lake and not a sea, here's a quick history/geography lesson. When the Caspian was first discovered by the Greeks, they had seen that it was massive like the Mediterranean Sea. They also talked to the Caspian People, which is where the sea gets its name. It may have access to the oceans through rivers, but it isn't physically connected to an ocean any other way. It is just like the Great Lakes of North America, connected to the Atlantic by the St. Lawrence River. The Greeks at the time didn't know better when they first saw it. All in all, it's a massive lake, which is still unfortunate for the Stans in the region

I mean, if you want to get technical, the Caspian Sea falls into the category of _inland_ sea. Which basically means it is arbitrarily large enough to be considered bigger than a lake. Inland seas may or may not be connected to the ocean, so definitionally, calling it a sea is essentially meaningless in the stupid debate this comment section seems upset over. In this case, the Caspian Sea was artificially connected to the Black Sea through a series of canals, so the Caspian Sea is itself naturally landlocked.

@@andrewschaeffer8147 Well it depends how you define the word 'landlocked' since it mostly defines as a 'country entirely surrounded by land' and many people by it mean 'without sea access'. Kazakhstan however counts as a landlocked, since it requires an access to an actual sea to not be landlocked, regardless of Caspian Sea being a very big lake

Even more interesting are the three enclave countries. These are countries which are completely surrounded by a single country. Lethoso is completely surrounded by South Africa. Both San Marino and The Vatican are enclaved within Italy.

Some facts: Austria and Switzerland are some of the only developed landlocked countries, but among other factors - such as having a lot of railroads and being surrounded by other developed countries (not all, but more stable countries) - they technically have an outlet to the sea via the river Rhine waterway in Switzerland and across the Danube river waterway in Austria.
