A Ron Best folder has always been one of my top grails ever since i first saw one on AZCK. It was a (sold) folding dagger with no exposed hardware and pearl inlays and I then knew what a true grail was. Thoroughly enjoyed this video! thank you Jim for sharing those beauties!

the way the damasteel pattern reflects in the polished edges when it's closed adds a very cool effect...Also, is the blue from the mammoth natural? it's incredible...never knew side cut ivory was a thing...

Just received my Valera exactly as you show here. I believe mine is number 2. It is definitely the best one in my fairly large collection of customs. Incredible workmanship. I surprised at how light it is too.Ron was an absolute pleasure to work with. What a class act for a guy who is the Best in the industry.

Sniff it. If it smells vaguely like envy and manly musk, it’s the same knife that I was handling here. 😂

@@JimSkeltonKnives there have been a few that I bought as a result of your videos. My Solo, my Rockstead Tei, my Greg Lightfoot although I bought a Gatekeeper because you said the edges on the full contact were too sharp, GTC airborne full dress with pearl, you mentioned pearl in your video. The only one I haven’t yet found is a custom Bodegga. And of course the Valera.

I beg to differ in one minor detail: after perfection comes virtuosity. Kind of perfection, but playful, effortless.

Question, Jim: Would you consider it OK for the maker of a full custom to use laser/waterjet cutting or similar to get difficult inlays done?
@JimSkeltonKnives
@JimSkeltonKnives 5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. Using a CNC is another skill added to their work, it doesn’t make the knife for them, it’s just another tool to get the job done.

There is no “reviewing” a R. Best knife..there is just acknowledgement of another very happy collector. What’s the red inlay..? Looks like zirconium and..lava!?

Yes it is. And when I worked for others, I look back at all the time I wasted in my life when I could have been with my kids or doing something else I loved instead of commuting in heavy traffic or working around idiots. All work is time out of our lives and away from the things we find most important such as family. But regardless, the other meaning to what I was saying is that you’re holding something special because there’s a piece of the maker in every custom knife. Part of their life, of their soul.

When people see stuff like this and scream "mall ninja" or "gas station", what they're really observing is that makers like Ron are the taste makers that these companies are knocking off because the pieces are just that desirable. They just miss that connection and miscategorize the custom work. I showed someone with this mindset a few high examples from my collection, and at first, he doubled down and said that if he could get something that looked half as nice and cut half as well for a hundred times less, he'd go that route no matter how much he had to blow. Then after about 20 minutes of handling them, he came out with the opinion that there was no way to quantify "half as nice" because they weren't even in the same category of object aside from the technical classification of "knife". Now he's collecting some rather gorgeous pieces and only kept some of his old ones to show people the mistake he used to make by comparison. This isn't to knock anyone who collects cheap knives that are meant to immitate things like this, but it's sometimes hard to express how different this sort of knife really is without hands-on experience. Though Jim's photography and explanation does a better job than most of us, including myself, could do.
