Yet another informative video. People get so caught up in comparing systems in Top Trumps that they never realize that these systems were designed to operate as part of a system. Alas machines get the attention and never the doctrines of design or intended use.

Slight correction: Chain Home was not the first IADS System. It was one component of the _Dowding system,_ which was the first IADS. The Dowding system was composed of Chains Home, the royal observer corps, a dedicated phone system, a single master map which updated the smaller maps held at each base controlled by the WC who directed their interceptors and AA guns.

Correlation: In PATRIOT, battery fire control (ECS) and battalion fire control (ICC) use the same weapons control computer. The radar is "just" a computer peripheral picking up a "bunch of targets". The ICC does not have a radar. It depends on data from the ECSs and data downloaded from higher, so it needs to correlate a "*big* bunch of targets".

Considering a lot of nato Vehicles already have remote controlled 50 cal's or 20mm could you not simply add a tracking system to that to counter drones? It doesn't cover all your basis but it goes a long way and I'd assume you could mass produce those turrets, or something like them for $50,000 or less to provide local air defence. Also in terms of drone to drone combat why not simply stick a machine gun or auto-cannon on a drone?

Nice history lesson. A system designed to shoot down very expensive maned fighters and bombers with very expensive anti-aircraft missiles. The problem is using them with drones, hundreds of cheap smart drones, arriving all at once. an Africanized Bee swarm of drones. shoot them down or get stung. Run out of missiles because they were to expensive to make in quantity. The economics of these systems do not work for most countries.

What's the cost difference between a large complicated SAM and a small uncomplicated fighter (Something in the spirit of an F-5)? It seems like it's not a straightforward assumption that large complicated SAMs are the most efficient method of air defence.

That's a thought I've had for a while...a relatively small/simple fighter with a decently low RCS with BVR missiles using data sharing rather its own radar could do a lot of damage... equally a loyal wingman type platform could work...it'd give any weapons a decent kinematic advantage

The problem is not that simple. For instance, Saudi Arabia has the hardware for a capable integrated air defense system (35 mm guns for point defense, Crotale and Shahine, think ER Crotale) for SHORAD, Hawk for medium range, and Patriot for long range, all working on different frequencies). They can pick the cheapest weapon available to kill the oncoming aircraft. But . . . , you must factor in the potential damage that the invader can do to the defended asset. At that point, efficiency ceases to be a factor.
