Certain foods can put a smile on your face and help you feel better when you’re feeling down.
Dr. Neal Barnard joins “The Weight Loss Champion” Chuck Carroll to share the foods that may improve depression and even help prevent it in the first place. Are there better options than an entire pint of ice cream or whole pizza?
Dr. Josh Cullimore then examines whether a cup of coffee can help boost your mood as well.
On the flip side, the group also discusses whether the joy of a junk food binge is only temporary. Could your favorites actually send you into a deeper depression?
Other questions answered from The Doctor’s Mailbag
- What is the healthiest way to fast?
- What is a good A1C for someone eating a plant-based diet?
- Should you buy organic beans?
- And many more.
Have a question? Post it in the comments or chat and we’ll answer as many as possible during the live broadcast.

That’s not what the science says. What does the medical review site “UpToDate” says about dairy? It’s healthy. The fat in dairy is healthy. Dietary cholesterol is not strongly correlated to your cholesterol. You know what’s correlated the most to your cholesterol ? Obesity. Please educate yourself. These people are more concerned with animal welfare than with your help.

cracks me up when people on videos say " talk to your doctor." Are you kidding? LOL. My doctor knows way less than I do about nutrition, exercise, genetics, supplements, diet. They are not taught those things. I have to research them on my own. If I listen to them totally, I will die an early death for sure!

Ugh! Sooo true. One of a few doctors I've gone to told me "I don't know, Google it" when i asked him questions about what could be causing some of the results of my blood work. Another one would look at the computer screen that shows previous visits connected to other doctors in the network and for almost every question I asked, he'd say that "it might be due to your history of anxiety and depression". Well that's depressing! (Yes, sarcasm)

That's always annoyed me as well. The same goes for therapists - I know far more than they do. Dr. Bernard has mentioned that most cardiologists die of heart disease. Who wants to take advice from someone who dies from the disease he treats?

I have been on the keto diet for four years. (Meat, cheese, eggs, coconut oil, no carbs or sugar etc.) The keto diet is high in fat and cholesterol. Come to find out this past year I have type 2 diabetes. My doctor said it was all due to the keto diet. The fat in the keto diet clogged my cells causing them to resist the insulin. Since getting doctor Barnard's book, ( which explains what saturated fat does to the cells), I have gone completely vegan. In 3 weeks, I have lost 16 lbs so far, and have already cut my diabetes medication in half. It is my hopes to get rid of my diabetes completely by continuing on with my vegan diet and intermediate fasting, for life.

As far as sneezing more, if lee had a lots of dairy and now she’s dairy free, that could free up nasal pathways. My son would get so much mucus and phlegm and even bruising when consuming dairy that he was advised by his pcp to ditch dairy and use nasal irrigation. After ditching dairy it cleared up and he can breathe freely without doing nasal irrigation.

I know this sounds crazy but...when my legs use to get twitchy I would immediately get up and wet a bar of soap just enough so that I could leave a layer of soap on my legs. Let it quickly air dry and go back to bed. No mess in the bed and no twitching. This is a variation of putting a bar of soap under the sheets but since the twitching was rare I didn't want to mess with the bar in the bed. I think any brand of soap will work. I use all sorts. It is the magnesium in the soap.

Thank you so much - I have a restlessness in my legs from time to time & have always suffered greatly from muscle cramps all my life - I am a 56 years old now but have found I get it more in thighs & ankles & its so painful it makes me so anxious - Im afraid to go to sleep. The past 2 years Ive gradually reduced my consumption of milk, dairy, oil , fish & now eggs, processed foods & really think about what Im eating. I am controlling it much better now but there isn't any info on it but I have found I always feel so much better after eating simply whole plant based meals. You had this issue raised so I agree food really does help repair & is naturally healing. It is hard tho as we've all been misled for years by governments/companies. I think I must lack iron & will up my intake on greens, beans etc & now know how dreadful sugar & fat (again processed foods) are to the body. Its a bit of a minefield online as to what information is true & what is false. Whole foods plant based diet makes sense to me - I'll be guided by you people & science & above all common sense. Keep educating everyone - you are doing a wonderful job ! :) Thank You again - your informative channel has helped me greatly !!! x

But don't protein rich legumes such as beans, lentils, chickpeas, and the rest, have antinutrients (phytates, oxalates...) that prevent the body from absorbing key nutrients? I am confused because some nutritionists and doctors advise abstaining from consuming legumes, grains, seeds, greens, and fruits precisely because of their high content of antinutrients. I'm sorry if you've already addressed this topic; I just found this informative channel.

Does raw foods diet combat type 2 diabetes better than paleo diet? If I were to go on vegan diet this way and also eliminate problematic foods like sugar, flour, grains, bread, pasta and rice that spike my blood sugar and replace meat with beans, lentils and chickpeas could I become diabetes free? I don't think it is a problem if it is a small amount of cashew dressing per day. Some people presoak cashews in water and a little salt, but I don't know how much it deactivates lectins. There are also lower lectin seeds&nuts...sesame, flaxseed, hemp, etc. For creamy dressings, I use common ingredients in my home such as pureed carrots and onions with some sesame seeds. Some people use diluted hummus.

As for the average egg these days… Apparently Jobs’ cancer is strongly linked to one’s genetic propensity for it and he had already had it for many, many years before it was visible enough to be diagnosed. He then changed his diet and lasted for years longer than most people who had this type of cancer at the time.

@Hobby Farmer..just because you are vegan does not mean you may not get a disease like cancer. But being vegan definitely lowers the risk and nutrition goes a long way if you are diagnosed.

Vegetarians still eat eggs and dairy and dairy has links with Breast cancer ( the type of cancer Linda McCartney died from) and it's also linked with prostate cancer ( the main cancer that kills men) so that probably explains why they died from cancer.

The only downside I've noticed since changing to a 100% vegan diet is metatarsal in both feet. Not sure if that's from vegan diet, or the fasting I'm doing. I'm also losing a bit too much weight, so I've added a day or two that I don't intermittent fast and add more nuts to my diet. Doesn't really seem to be helping and as a post-cancer patient, I want to keep up long and intermittent fasting.

I have been vegan for 20 years. I do not eat any processed foods and am SOS free for 5 years. I am 70 years old and still have high blood pressure. I get exercise daily and sleep 6 to 8 hours per night. I know my doctor is going to prescribe me blood pressure medicine and I don't want to take this. Where can I turn for help.

I wonder if coffee improves mood simply by relieving caffeine withdrawal? Does it elevate mood in people who don't drink it habitually? For me, being addicted to caffeine (which can happen even when drinking a small amount regularly) was highly detrimental to my mental and physical health.

good question... i also didn't hear if anyone factored in the effect of the weight loss itself... in other words, is it the actual FOOD that is making people feel better? if you weigh 350 lbs and you lose 100, isn't your mood likely to improve because you're seeing a positive move toward a goal that perhaps you've wanted to see for m any years... ???

Not sure where you are on your journey, but as a help you could read Joel Fuhrman "Eat for life". Its not that difficult to move from vegetarian to vegan. And if you want to lose weight - stay in caloric deficit, limit oil usage (or skip it at all), dont overdo nuts.
