Being a skull commander and not doing the same defense missions actually playing the game I learned a few things: 1. New players want to shoot and kill EVERYTHING. There’s a stage where you just wanna go guns blazing and just go crazy because the game look cool and super fun seeing explosions while you’re unloading rounds. 2. If you’re a vet and they’re new. Let them do whatever while you put in the work for objectives. FUN is a priority for new players and as a leader you want to make sure they have fun so they don’t get bored. 3. They will definitely follow you. Use the communication wheel or coms. If they don’t listen then that’s okay too because at least one person will. 4. This happens a lot to me. If you die and they take your stuff then let them. They want to try out the cool guns they haven’t unlocked & a True HellDivers vet can be effective with ANYTHING. 5. Remind them that spreading democracy is a fun thing and great for morale. 6. You will always look super badass and awesome showing new players how to properly survive hoards, kill bile titans/tanks. 7. Remember, a great leader wants the experience to always be fun.

I’ve seen a lot of comments about teammates killing patrols/taking unnecessary engagements. I’m high lvl and don’t have any need to solo grind helldiver to get samples or credits etc. so i decided to quick play lower difficulties to help out lower level divers and that’s something that runs rampant. What I learned is you need to take control of the squad, use the coms wheel and type chat and they’ll most likely follow your lead. If they’re engaging every enemy they see, just keep going. Sometimes you gotta learn the hard way, or they just bail after the second bug breach and follow you. All 4 people don’t need to be in that fight, especially when trying to get the mission done in time. If your teammates continue it, just do the mission, it’s gonna be better in the end since you’ll get the mission done so they aren’t wasting the mission time

Nah in 75% of the situations they will completely ignore your pings, text and voice chat and go off to do their own thing, aggro enemies, walk into oncoming stratagems and teamkill you.

musician here, and halfway decent piano player, here’s what u wanna do if you’re tryna transition from wasd to arrows! 1. Mirror hands! Write down some of your favorite strats on a notepad and practice inputting them in both hands at the same time! This helps your brain establish muscle memory from one side to another 2. Rhythmic mirror hands! Go back and forth between each individual directional input (w, up; d, right; a, left etc) as fast as possibile, using the same strats. 3. Lh Rh! Run the Strats with the left hand, then the right hand, simple nuff. You should be moving at lightening speed on this step; if you’re experiencing hesitation, go to step 2 and try again Aside from locking in those Strats in the RH, this establishes a relationship in your head between the arrow keys and wasd, which is atypical for the computer keyboard! Aside from the stuff you practiced, your brain will have an easier time “sight reading” other Strats bc you’ve already established neural precedent!! It’s worth practicing, bc fellow helldivers are counting on you to get that strat on the ground asap

@@joshmiller9783 The core mechanic is to complete the objective. In some cases, you do need to eliminate a target, but in other types you do not. This is why the number of kills does not affect your score or is rewarded in any way. Getting the objectives done is the most important thing so going out of the way to fight is not the core mechanic you think it is. The "horde" is there to hinder you from doing the objective.

The keybind tip was eye-opening. Since Helldivers 2 is unique in letting you also adjust the input of actions based on tap/press/hold, new avenues of rebinding have opened that I never realized. You just saved me the trouble of awkwardly reaching for nearly out-of-reach keys in the heat of battle, and a whole lot more. That tip was very much appreciated, it changes a lot about this game.

Heads up on the double space dive key. This breaks the jetpack. The jetpack does not use the "Use backpack Function key" yet so if you double bind climb as shown in the video, the pack almost entirely becomes non functional. I have been using this setup for a while and as a fan of the jump pack, I have had to rebind for now. Just a warning to those who may not want to learn the hard way. Great tips though nonetheless.

2 notes for alternative strats: The shield generator can be swapped out for the ballistic shield and a one handed SMG or pistol. I like to use the revolver for this in earlier difficulties for good and consistent light armor penetration. The cluster bomb strike can be used to clear robot factories, but it's inconsistent. You have to position the factory on the right of your screen and hope that one of the munitions lands in the vents. You can also time it so it hits right as the doors open to release more Automatons. Little tips I also picked up: You can ricochet an Autocannon round off the vent covers of factories to take them out at range. Being highly versatile, the Autocannon can also be used to clear bug nests, spore trees and propaganda towers from significant range. Enemies will investigate the sound of the round exploding rather than you firing, so this can be coupled with an armor that provides agro range reductions for a stealthier experience or to kite enemies onto a strategem. The Railgun overcharge is 3.00 seconds *exactly*. Time shots accordingly. The Eagle gun run will always come down in a straight line parallel to the angle the strategem is thrown, this is great for bottlenecks and keeping collateral damage down. Any impact explosive shot/thrown at the back of a Chargers leg will weaken the armor, the second shot/throw is a guaranteed kill if it lands. Extreme tip (use at your own risk): If you're having particular trouble with an enemy and you're close to the edge of the map, you can go out of bounds to trigger the traitor barrage and kite the enemy into it. You *will* die, so be sure to have a reinforce on hand. I've taken out Chargers and Bile Titans using this suicidal strat.

Telling people to use ballistic shield isn't a 'tip' bro😂 trust me man i WISH it even remotely worked but it really doesn't lol. If you think about it the ballistic shield should be STRONGER than shield pack due to the restrictions it puts on you. Hopefully it gets some buffs

wanna know what sold me on the ballistic shield? i tried it out on a bot mission once, we got obliterated and split up with me as the only survivor, i put the shield on my back and RAN. i kept running through 3 more enemy groups without dying until i made it back to the squad, the shield on my back ate so many bullets i couldn't even count them all. yes the energy shield can do the same and it covers your entire body, and it can deal with rockets unlike the ballistic shield, BUT that riot shield will never run out on you, you can rely on it to do it's job. and it's even better when you run the Defender and Redeemer with it.

i personally dont change my railgun to unsafe unless i see a certain enemy type (Bile titan, Cannon Turret are the main ones.) I find I can one hit most other enemies if i hit them in the right spot. The only exception would be a charger. But i hit it twice in the leg then kill it quick. So my gun being in unsafe mode isnt a risk i should be taking most of the time seeing as most of the time. The extra charge doesnt change the amount of shots to kill and sometimes actually increases the amount of time to kill. Example. Over charging when i dont need to.

I definitely agree that playing with key setup has improved my gameplay far more than weapons/stratagems/armor. Everyone is different and finding your ideal layout will help exponentially. The space bar settings for climb and dive are nice. I was trying to figure out a way to do both with a quick easy to find key, definitely trying that in tonight's dive. Gonna try the right click settings as well. I like the mouse wheel click currently but its worth checking out to see how it feels. Stratagems are on the Number Pad 8=up 5=down 4 and 6 are left and right. Lets me run while calling in boom booms. Weapon wheel is left and right keys but up and down are mouse wheel. I find I dont need to change fire rate but scope zoom needs to be quick with no movement from either hand placement and is used slightly more often. Light armor always. I love Scout armor to get behind enemies while they focus on the rest of the team but servo assisted has been op in my games. The half court grenade shots into bug holes and vents is insanely consistent.

The guard dog backpacks have killed me more than anything else in this game. Use the shield backpack and stop leaning on a team killing laser to do your work for you. Sometimes you have to fight your own battles, after level 20, you should be. Also the slugger rips apart bugs with armor with ease. Get rid of the trash mobs with cluster bombs or the redeemer and finish your smaller armored bugs with your slugger, titan and chargers with your rail gun. If you want to use the breaker that’s fine, change to the Senator side arm for bugs, it punches holes and blows off limbs pretty easily. A kit is about balance, making sure you have something effective for everything, if you’re struggling with something, it’s because you haven’t balanced your kit. If you NEED extra reinforcements you’re doing it wrong. Here’s a free tip, you don’t have to fight every scout group that passes. You can let them pass without that stupid laser pack giving away your position and letting a bug breach happen taking you 6 minutes for your team to handle just for another breach to happen from a new scout group joining in mid way. Fully loaded, stamina, limb health and something fun to throw in the mix for boosters. If you’re not going in with all your ammo you’re going to be in a tight spot later. You can’t vote if you don’t come back alive. Democracy isn’t for the dead and the weak.

i've found the best set up for me so far is a light armour that gives extra nades, shield backpack and nade launcher. I have run around on lvl 8 missions clearing nests and just not fighting any terminids. With the backpack keeping me alive enough to survive a few hits when my stamina does run out.

Another keybind that helped me a lot is set prone also to C but the trigger type to Hold and set Crouch trigger type to Tap. This makes sure that when I'm diving I just remain prone if I hold the button, so if I just dive to get distance of an enemy, I auto insta get up when falling on the ground. I died so many times jumping away from an enemy and then just staying there in the ground (the Z key in the middle of the action was terrible for me). Sprinting to get up a lot of times didn't work because of slow.

My tip is: Arc Thrower For whatever reason tons of people are completely sleeping on it. It's imho the best weapon in the game right now. Secret sauce is after first charge up every next one can be released after half charging so it fires quite rapidly actually. Clears hordes like crazy 1 shoting ~3 light bugs with each arc or clearing them around armored targets as it widdles them down. Can even kill bile titan given enough time if faster means are out of stock. And it doesn't run out of ammo. But great tips all and all up to extreme difficulty. If you want to do Helldives on bugs (I didn't dare to do them on Automatons yet) forget about sentries, clusters and that kind of nonsense because you'll be fighting 5 titans at once with just as many chargers and like 20 bile throwers all over place. Not to mention swarms of all the other shite. Orbital rail, 500kg and personal shield will be your best friends then. Railgun for final slot works, grenade launcher or my favourite mentioned already, arc thrower.

You are actually making your dive slower, bcs the game is waiting for some time to differentiate the imput between tap and hold. In souls series or Elden Ring, you ever feel like you pressed the roll button but your character didn't roll in time? It's the same, the button is set up to be tap for roll, hold for run. That's why the game waits a little bit before deciding if you wanted to run or roll.

If you're game for editing the keybind config (the devs put in instructions on how to do it inside the config itself so it's not considered cheating) then I would suggest binding a mouse side button to run forward so you can run while aiming while pressing WASD on your stratagems all at the same time. no compromises. the bind I set up also opens stratagems + sprints forward on holding mouse button 5, with just opening stratagems without running on holding mouse 4. credit to some guy on a forum I got it off lol, and it's clearly the best solution possible.

On PC, you can run AND use WASD for stratagems at the same time! You just have to copy-paste the same secondary keybind for both move forward and stratagem in the settings file. This game lets you have more than one key bound to an action, and lets you edit the settings file manually.

shield backpack is the way to go for any mission no matter the faction on any of the last 3 difficulties. surviving over kill count is more important. turrets die almost immediately on harder difficulties, just take another eagle or orbital to deal with titans/tanks like KG bomb, laser or railcannon. impact nade is a trap. makes it very hard to kill nests/factories, but can be good for egg destruction missions if you dont have the fire Breaker. unsafe mode on rail gun is only good for bile titan, automaton tank, and automaton hulk. everything else dies in 1 shot or 2 shots depending on the enemy and it always takes two shots to break a chargers armor and one more to kill it. not worth having on all the time as holding down the fire button to line up a shot without killing yourself is usually better.

I played without dynamic aim mode for a while, and tried it because of your tip and absolutely hated it. I also tried your dual action spacebar tip and dove into several walls, to great detriment and loss of super samples. It's important to note, if you are already very comfortable with your control scheme and find success with it, you should stick with it provided it doesn't slow you down. Don't get me wrong this is a good video and is likely very helpful, and I found most of the non-control-related tips to be accurate and useful. Keep up the content!

The most important take for me, out of everything, when watching this video: The Dive keybind being set to "Spacebar". - This will completely change how you move, and save your ass so damn often! Whoever thought one of the most important and split-second reaction-based movement keys should default to "z" on the keyboard needs taken out behind the proverbial shed and shot. Painfully. You can't use it effectively. Do yourself a huge favor and follow his keybind instructions & set it to "Tap Spacebar". Good lord Odin, this is a HUGE improvement and should have been set by default. The second most important was binding your arrow keys to Strategems instead of WASD movement. SO much more intuitive and you can still move while calling a stratagem. DO THIS. It will change the game for you. In a good way.

Worried your living in the walls of my house tho 🤔 One thing you didn't mention is I find the entire game MUCH smoother and mouse inputs closer to 1:1 with sensitivity set to lowest, and then dialing in DPI with mouse software (if you have it). Feels like 1% lows get a huge improvement in addition to mouse smoothness. Also this game is absolutely amazing with a response trigger style KB. My Wooting is clutch for quick actions, dodges, etc.

A few things I disagree with here. First off, please do not use the drone on higher difficulties. On difficulty 8-9 the drone can often aggro groups of enemies that your team should not fight, and probably end up making your run much harder than it needs to be. And if you're recommending level 20+ gear like the railgun, the shield backpack is SO much better. Suviving is 100x more important than getting a few extra pointless kills with the lazer drone. Plus the lazer drone often damages teammates and sometimes even you. It does more harm than good and there are MUCH better backpacks anyways. Even for players under level 20, the supply pack provides more value. Also, the eagle airstrike is far better than the cluster strike. It damages armor much more, and can take out bug nests way better. You can easily take out 2-3 bug nests with one airstrike. The gatling turret is not that great. Having a higher kill count is not important, what's important is doing objectives, getting samples, and finishing the mission quickly. A gatling turret will rarely help you with any of those.

I used a razor naga mouse and a razor nostromo left-hand keypad. I can remap all the buttons to any keyboard button or combo of buttons. The mouse has 12 thumb buttons and all up has 19 buttons. The nostromo has 23 buttons if you include the dpad's 4 directions as buttons, but they can also be remapped to keyboard buttons. I always use down on the dpad for maps and forward for inventory or equivalent. I will definitely say that having 12 thumb buttons on a mouse is a big advantage for any game, once you get your muscle memory, of course.

That space bar tip is good. I pressed my fkn windows key instead of alt today. You can guess how that went. I was trying to think of a good accessible key because I usually only use control for prone but this game has dive and prone. Thanks for the tip, I'll try this!

an additional tipp from me (didnt see it on any yt vid so far) Open map an cklick on it to select targets repead that to locate the bonus ojectives it helps a lot in fining sporetrees, radar stations and any other bonus ojective on the map that way you can easyer plan your route throu the map

Impact grenade, railgun, breaker, cluster bomb, resupply backpack, incin eagle is my preferred loadout for most missions. Cluster and incin and impacts take care of reinforce and bug breeches. Rail gun takes out heavies. Supply pack lets you spam rails, stims, breaker, and impacts freely.

TLDR - "unless there is a reason to engage a group of enemies, don't do it".... this one piece of advice is gold and few people in my matchmade games understand it. I can complete some missions easier solo than having these aggro magnets in the match.

it might be a bit awkward at first, but i bound my mouse wheel up/down and side thumb buttons to my strategems so i can keep my hand on my mouse rather than moving to arrow keys. the only real downside i found is that it takes extra time to do the objectives that require a grid movement because wheel up/down is slow in that regard

I honestly thought it was a core mechanic like how the mini map works. When you had to stand still to use the strategems. Like why else would the default be on the movement buttons and not the arrow keys for something that specifically is arrow.

@@mryellow6918 Probably just default because you can do it that way as the fastest technically. But arrow keys are better since you can move and do it at the same time. So devs probably preferred the movement keys over arrow keys

If you do a dive to avoid damage and have low health, heal while you're on the floor before you get up, the healing is massive and will carry you through the getting up animation even as you get hit.

As I am also an old fart (50) i chose to use Voice Attack to just call the stratagems. Its so much easier and keeps me right in the action without delay. Does not 100% work due to mic issues or pronunciation, but more often than key combos.

Consider supply pack instead of shield for automatons, depending on your loadout. Why? It is an extra 8 stims. Also consider the explosive damage reduction armour instead of Legionnaire for robots. For obvious reasons.

So basically the main part... Stratagems vs Terminids: Laser Drone, Rail Gun, Eagle Airstrike or 500Kg Bomb. For holdouts, Mortars and EMS, Gatling and Auto Sentry Vs Automatons: SHield pack, Rail Gun, 1 Mortar(plusEMS) per party, Laser Strike, Walking Barrage for assaults.
