In May 2013, a shipment of around 1.5 tons of seemingly normal cheese was refused entry into the United States. And while looks wise there was nothing suspicious, according to the Food and Drug Administration, this shipment of cheese had a problem: mites.

What? $25 off? I wouldn't spend $25 on honey let alone an amount so high that the company can offer $25 off of the price.🤦‍♂️ I'm sure it's tasty honey but unless it's curing an illness or de-aging me that much is too much for honey.

I always thought mites were so darling. Yes, they can cause problems, but I'm still fond of them. I love the long pseudo-antennae of clover mites, the soft little red velvet mites, and these little cheeseheads. Our relationship with microorganisms and creepy crawlies is so much more interconnected than a lot of people think!

From wikipedia: In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration detained about a ton of the cheese, putting further imports to the United States on hold. This was because the cheese mites could cause an allergic reaction if consumed in large quantities. The FDA stated that the cheese was above the standard of six mites per cubic inch. The restriction was lifted in 2014.

@@tacticalpoet Maybe (just speculating) one of the presumptions was that the mites could escape from the cheese and spread somehow into other foods. But that would be mistaken, since the mites have been selectively cultivated over hundreds of generations (similarly to other domesticated animals) to prefer the cheese over other food sources, and even if they did have a tendency to escape, this should be easily solved by regulating the packaging

Can't stress this enough. All mammals are elongated donuts, with other invaginations (respiratory system and urogenital system, mainly.) The digestive tract is the hollow tube that runs through us all, from mouth to anus. Something that is in your alimentary canal is not actually _inside your body_ -- it is just in a space surrounded by your body. If an organism were to pass beyond the walls of the alimentary canal, _then_ it would be inside your actual flesh.

There is this "Molkerei Pfund" cheese store in the city of Dresden. They offer the largest variety and highhest quality of cheese, including the famous Milbenkäse. My grandparents visited there with my brother and me. At the time I was not ready for Milbenkäse, seeing the tiny mites crawl around under a plastic dome to not spread to other varieties of cheese. I was too busy tasting the Roquefort and Gorgonzola and Camembert and Gouda and Tête de Moine and so many other varieties. It's a paradise for cheess lovers.

They actually are on pretty much every plant, especially fruits. Pick a wild berry off of its plant and if it isn't tainted by pesticide or other pollutants, then there's a good chance you will see a mite. Some are pests who devour the plant into oblivion if left unchecked (usually a sign that their predators died out for whatever reason), some harmlessly graze and wander across the plant aimlessly, some even eat other mites feeding on the plant (functioning as some of the helpful predators that keep others in check). Plant mites are generally as edible as the plants they feed on, and usually taste sweeter due to concentrating the sugars in their bodies, though most people can't tell when they are consuming them, especially in more processed products. A full video could cover all of this better.

Apparently all of that cheese on the US is imported from other parts, -I see very hard to manufacture on mass something so exotic and that used to be illegal until recently - so that means that either there aren't great variety of imported cheese or that Canadian cheese is likely superior to European cheese.

Thank you. I am lactose intolerant. Yeah, really. I use commercial yogurt as a laxative. In 1970 I was diagnosed as having IBS or maybe even Crohns. So imagine my surprise that I could enjoy certain cheeses with out several aches and gas and toilet paper for the next week after eating a small portion of cheese. How so? you may ask. I joined a French family who had a cheese board every single evening as an after-main course corner filler. AND...GUESS...WHAT!! I discovered I could eat sheep and goat cheeses, aged or not. Unfortunately, not so much any thing as small as a 0.5 cm square any bovine mild product that had not spent a least a couple hours in a slow oven. Think enchiladas! Is it no wonder then, that I never developed a relationship with cheese? That was in my early 50's, When I called my mother and told her I had eaten Rocquefort having not yet died, she responded with: Oh! Did I not tell you that you were allergic to my breast milk? That is why you cost me so much money! You had to have nothing but goat's milk and goat cheese and goat, Goat, GOAT all the time. It must have been the Polishness of your father. It was certainly not Texan. ... what I think? Yeah, everyone is different not only because of their environment but also because DNA is really just a Black Jack gamble.

I’m so sorry to tell you all this, but Milbenkaese or “spider cheese” as it’s sometimes known, is delicious. It’s like an extra sharp cheddar but way creamier. I couldn’t stop eating it, even after they told me what it was. I made some German friends that day lol. Mimolette tastes like medium cheddar that someone left out on the counter for four days and I’m not here to defend it.

"...most cheeses are not usually filled with so many mights that the FDA decides to take action." This statement implies there is a predetermined number of mites the FDA is O.K. with. I have a bad feeling it is a non-zero number.
