fun to look at. mixed media, when combined properly, builds on the strengths of its constituent components; as in life, diversity leads to amazing results.

OMG I love Mia's Watercolour + Graphite powder work. It completely blew my mind! I have graphite powder and never used it for Watercolours! 😱 I am off rumble through my drawers to find the graphite! Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for the tips! I'm going to have a go at graphite powder and watercolours too. I've started experimenting with mixed media in my art journal lately and adding layers is so much fun. It's changed my journalling process as I'm not so concerned about filling out my journals in chronological order; rather, I enjoy moving back and forth between pages and adding layers here and there.

I’m experimenting with how to work with different wet media combinations of charcoal, pastel, gouache, and watercolor and it’s so fun! And with all that to experiment with, if I make a mistake with the order (like today my pastel wash was a bit too dark for the watercolor pencils I was using to show up well) I can just switch to another medium that suits the direction of the art better. I had an art teacher as a kid who I didn’t even like at all (she was quite mean sometimes lol), but I’ll be forever grateful she taught me about watercolors over an oil pastel resist!

I used to love the sensory feeling of charcoal. I hated digital art because I couldn't feel it. I also loved textiles for the same reason. I love how we're all different and how that leads to new ideas. I am experimenting with watercolor, ink, and gouache. I could see doing some collage with it too. Watercolor is so fascinating to me.

My favorite combinaison, which I discovered mostly out of necessity for efficiency, is acrylic paint and color pencil! I can get more subtle or precise results with pencil, but I prefer the finish of paint so I work with both on the same piece. It's even more efficient when working on wood or smooth surfaces, but you can get a fun texture on canvas too

I experimented last week with fountain pen colored ink and did a topcoat of acrylic gloss medium….total fail….the medium “ate” the ink and created blotches all over…it created this vintage, retro feel….im not even sure what to call it…i posted it as a fail…i sold it the next day😮! Im not a professional artist..i paint and draw for fun!

LOL I also feel like cheating when I use more than one medium. I'm gradually leaving that feeling behind, thankfully.

I was told that Acrylic and Oil paint together doesn’t count as mixed media. Its just oil painting with an acrylic base.

Technically I think it counts! But different strokes for different folks of course - Mia, Art Prof Staff

Oil and acrylics are both paint so it doesn't really seem like mixed media, just two different types of paint. If I used 2 types of marker on a drawing, is that mixed media or just a marker drawing? 🤔
