They take out all the black male characters, remake Tanya (who is black), a lesbian, and make Cyrax into an angry black woman. All this inclusion sure has a subliminal erasure of the whole dang race. Like there are more LGBT black people than hetero black people in the real world.

All these years later, Ultimate Mortal Kombat III was peak Mortal Kombat. Once John Tobias walked away and Midway also died, the heart and soul of Mortal Kombat died. The first 3 games were dark, gritty, and had great lore with their characters. These games from a sound design perspective were ahead of their time. Stages had musical transitions and stingers to end the stage music on win or during a fatality. The MC also gave feedback, hurled insults, or laughed during combat.

Accounting for the backstory, the whole bit was they were formerly human and then became cyborgs. Specifically Cyrax in the classic series of games would partially recover his humanity and even show his face at times while Sektor would insist on becoming a leader of machines. With the semi-reboot MK9 the first few chapters show once again what the 2 were like in life before cyberization. The human forms were alt skins in that game too, and although not iron man suits like in the current iteration, the 2 had their cyber abilities in human form via armored accessories on the ninja uniform. Cyrax's wish in the reboot continuity was for him to recover his humanity, which he never acheived as he did in the classic storyline, resulting in his perishing 2 times (once in the MKX comics and again in MK11).

Cyrax and Sektor had organic parts in the past timelines. Liu Kang tweaked things resulting in Bi-Han choose to used advanced technology without stripping the humanity of the duo. The gender swap was just an example of changing things.

@@slckb0y65 Let's rewind the clock. In the 90's, the male ninjas were played by Daniel Pensia, John Turk and Sal DiVita. Then they made Sektor and Sub-Zero look Chinese in 2002, when the fifth game came out. Cyrax looked black and Scorpion looked Japanese. The female ninjas looked Middle Eastern and then white before going back. Then Kitana and Millena look Asian in MK11. Nightwolf was played by Sal and only later looked like a Native American. Raiden was played by Carlos Pensia and then it's not really clear that he should look Chinese. Kung Lao is Chinese, but was played by Anthony Marquez. Kano was half Japanese and then changed to just being Australian. Shao Kahn looked human with his helmet on and only recently looked monstrous. With the helmet off, he looked similar to MK11. Shang Tsung was played by two Chinese men and then by a white guy, before looking Chinese again. Tanya was dark black, then light and now dark again. Let's face it, the developers have been changing race for years and being unintentionally offensive on top of it. I don't find Sektor and Cyrax to be that big of a deal. I see them in the same light that I do Janet Cage. Examples of the nature of changing timelines. As to the clothes, I get it with Sonya. Her earlier outfits didn't make sense as a military uniform. The eighth game with DC did and the last two games did as well. Jax as well. Kitana was consistent until the ninth game when they went too ridiculous with her and Millena. The last two games were more consistent with the earlier games and the option to reuse the earlier suits as alternative skins worked. Same with Sonya.

Look, I like the designs for the new cyborgs. They also look like a lot of fun to play. However, my issue is that they are not just replacing, but erasing existing characters from the classic era. On that note, I also hated that they made Kuai Liang into the Scorpion of this game for no reason other than to have a character named Scorpion. Where is Hanzo? I think that if the new cyborgs were new characters completely as successors to the originals, it would be better--much like the combat kids until they hit rewind on that, too.

Mortal Kombat is an 18+ fighting game and the majority of people who buy fighting games are straight heterosexual males. Therefore games should be designed to appeal to the captive audience, rather than risking turning them away. People whom you described as studying "Gender Studieses who have The Blue Hair and the Pronouns," pretty much do not even exist in real life. I have travelled the planet and proportionality, they are extremely rare and I tend to only spot them living in enclaves in certain parts of over populated cities. We live in a capitalist society? Why appeal to a demo that is close to non existent, when there are much easier ways to make money? Some assume their are more activists sorts than there are due to their obnoxiously loud presence online especially in fields like game journalism. What pisses me off is how NRS decided to not only reboot the franchise again, but also include not just multiverses, but also different timelines to the story and they did almost nothing with that premise. The main antagonist is the same 2 guys that have been it for 2+ decades now, they tried to be shocking by making Kuai Liang Scorpion, but did absolutely nothing except give him Hanzo Hasashi‘s entire origin story (including guvibg him his wife) and calling it a day and the best they can come up with for Cyrax and Sektor is genderswap them. We see they can actually do interesting new stories such as with Mileena, Kenshi, Baraka and Reptile, but those are obviously the minority to a lot of just uncreative wasted opportunities to a setting that includes multiverses.

I'm a merit based person. So my questions that I have to ask are: Does this make Mortal Kombat better? No. Does it make the storyline better? No. Does it make the game look better? No. Was it something anyone asked for? No. Will it increase interest in the series. No. Maybe instead of trying to constantly re-invent the wheel... just make alternate or earnable versions while keeping the original intact? I, as a millennial, only grew up with mk games at the arcade. So i didnt play much. I never played the 3d ones. When I finally got money to get an xbox 360 and become a fan of mk9, I really liked the women. There was already diversity even before. I, as a millennial, find it peculiar that we are not allowed to see the beautiful curves of a woman. But we are allowed to bite the jugular off a neck.

Swapping the cyber ninjas gender can be explained as a shift in the timelines, but its kinda unnecessary to do it anyway. Maybe people would like Mortal Kombat more if they actually put MK characters in the DLC instead of all these F$%king guest characters. The biggest crime though will be when, 6 months after the last DLC is released they put out a "Komplete" edition at half the price and include all DLC with it.

I dont know if covering up the female characters and dulling their sexier attributes is even done for female gamers. Have Netherrealm/WB actually had a focus group with female fighting game players, asking them their opinion on how MK portrays feminity or feminism? Did they even care to gauge fan (male or female) opinion on fundamental lore changes? Did they observe similar alterations from their competition at Namco, SNK and Capcom? No, of course not. WB just does what it always does. They've done it countless times to DC. CW basically died because of it. People don't like it.

The race swapping of the ninjas doesnt bother me. They used to be white men, now they’re all asian decent. Cyrax was always a black man since deadly alliance but the gender swapping was so unnecessary. And I hate the argument about the sexualizing of female characters when one would say “oh nobody is going to be fighting in bikinis, thats just not realistic” in the same game where someone can get stabbed and have their ribs and spinal cord broken and still fight as if nothing ever happened.
