@@alant5757 it is very easy to be overdraft by accident, due to human error, or fraud. Years ago I went to a restaurant that added a very high gratuity to my bill without my knowledge or consent. It took a heated discussion with the manager to get it taken off, but if I wasn’t able to speak to them, I would lose that money. That’s not to mention poverty, where people like myself have to constantly choose whether to pay transit fare, gas bill, or finally buy something to eat. With the account balance always just barely above zero, there’s always a looming threat to buy, say, $7 worth of groceries, only to realize at the cashier that you only have $6.88 on your card. Whoops, I’m overdraft now, and on the hook for an additional $35 that I most certainly don’t have. Do you think it’s a just system?

Isn't a credit report supposed to tell potential lenders how much debt you already have before approval your loan? They need to calculate if your monthly income can sustain all the monthly payments. If medical debt is excluded, that will just hurt both sides in the end since the debtor is in a higher risk of cannot afford all the bills after getting more loans.

When you sign a loan application, you are attesting that you have included all monthly debt payments that you have not just what’s on the credit report, of course most people won’t do that, but then that will be fraudulent and put people in even more trouble if they’re caught, so if they have medical debt and have a monthly payment they’re supposed to tell the lender about it, but at least medical debt won’t affect their credit scores anymore.

Why are people over drawing their accounts? Balance your checking /debit accounts, check online before withdrawing or making a purchase. You should know exactly what's in your account available to spend. This is continuing to allow adults to behave like children. Rather than require them to behave appropriately with their cash we remove the consequence to remind them not to do that again. One overdraft fee should be the only wake up call needed.

Bank of America was such a crook with the overdraft fees. Luckily they got sued. Back in the early 2000s if I bought a few things using my debit card and I went overdrawn, it would automatically charge the highest amount item first followed by the smallest amount. Even if i had enough money to cover the smallest amount initially, it would purposely overdraw me to charge me $35fee 3-4 times instead of 1-2 times.
