@@lakispyravlakis Unlike with the Decagear, this company has already released a beta version of this headset for the Asian markets. And its release is pretty close. The creators are claiming they are starting production for the AIO version this week and mass production the tethered next week. And they'll be sending out copies to techies and whatnot. It may have some potential issues, but I do see far more green flags than red. They are answering questions pretty well too in the comments section of their kickstarter and are listening to feedback, such as expanding the faq with questions and answers from the comments, updating information that may be listed wrong or outdated, etc. Not saying that it will be a definite success, but it's definitely far from a Decagear. There's no reason to have "limited real estate" in any virtual environment, VR or otherwise. I'm old enough to remember the days of social games that let you host your own instances on your own servers. You would deploy a gateway to your instance in the public world to give anyone in the game access to your instance, or you would go to your instance and personally invite people to come join you there to keep it private. This is no different than AAA game companies not allowing private servers for hosting matches. We spent from the early 90s through the 2010s and some of the 2020s using private servers to host games, and all the game maker had to do was host a master server that people could connect to and ask "what servers are out there?" It's a move motivated by greed and greed alone.

Honestly selling virtual land doesn't bother me per-se. At least as far as selling server-space to host something is. That's a significant part of what pays for Second Life servers. You want a space for folks to hang out on that game? You pay for it. my issue with it is how MUCH that costs considering how little goes into keeping the game up to date for modern hardware. I have *my own* server, and still had to pay for the hardware and the... (does calculations) 172Kwh per month of electricity to keep it running. There will ALWAYS be inequality. "we don't allow private land ownership in the metaverse because that's not fair" Yeah, and if it's open source (like people want) I can just run a copy on my Thinkcentre and sell the space on Discord if I want. @TylerTraverse3 жыл бұрын
I believe the marketing is such that it's built on top of desktop linux. It's meant to be a workstation. Android for VR has not been used too much outside of the Quest, but as far as I've seen, they've all (non-Quest Android VR) been entertainment focused, nowhere near workstation focused. The Quest at least has a semblance of multitasking, but it's not even close to being a linux desktop environment. You can probably figure out how to install one and VNC into it or something like that, but it'd be a rather awful experience and run as a 2D application, whereas SimulaVR is trying to create a 3D, VR desktop environment. As a programmer, I'd like to try it out, as I've always wanted to try to work with a bunch of floating screens, but so far my experience trying to program in VR has been very uncomfortable.

I do think one option for "portable" VR is essentially a standalone headset where the computer part is external, yet still portable. So like a backpack or smaller form size desktop designed to be moved around that you just stick in the corner and stream to. That solves some major problems with standalone without having to wait for the hardware to catch up, and could potentially help with price since if you don't need to make something that small/power efficient you can get better specs with less cutting edge tech. Honestly it's sort of something I could see Valve doing given some of the hardware they've been working on. Imagine a more powerful, screenless Steam Deck designed for a headset or wireless upgrade to the existing Index. Add the ability to still plug into a normal gaming PC or even just link with one for other uses and you've got a really solid PC VR headset you can still show off at a friends house.

All of them sound too good to be true, and basically no third party manufacturer has really succeeded outside of Pimax (who is also promising a crazy new headset in the distant future). I just hope the Varjo Aero launches and ships successfully, since that is the only known 'true' upgrade for PCVR. In terms of 'land ownership' in a metaverse, it has existed for a while in different forms. I don't think it's about scarcity, its about owning a private space in an existing 'world'. Second Life is one such example, however that is predicated on their ecosystem being built from the ground up for players to create everything. Only problem is, VRchat is already kind of doing this better, where Sansar (the VR version of SL) already failed.

@DampeS8N3 жыл бұрын
@@Ticktok_of_Oz I doubt it. There is one feature that all long-use computing has always had and when it is neglected leads to failure for the devices. The ability to be lap-able / desk-able. Most - almost all - people need to be able to rest their arms on something to be able to use a device for 8 hours straight. When it comes to mass-market business equipment for the office, this is universal. Any device that requires you to hold your arms up without resting them on a surface or your lap just can't be used for that long comfortably. This is one of the reasons touch devices, outside of phones, haven't taken off. Every device that has really stood the test of time and become standard allows you to rest your whole arm on a desk or lap your hands. Keyboard, mouse, game pads. And even before digital devices, office-type devices like pens/pencils, books, every form of writing that wasn't meant to be chiseled into stone walls, all of them work this way. So, no, I don't think a deck style VR setup will ever become the dominant form of computer interaction. Not if you need to keep your hands up off a desk. Now, a VR setup with hybrid physical/digital controls (such as a keyboard that appears in the VR space) which you use at a desk? That could work.

You and all the others are simply hating on a concept you haven't clearly grasped yet. (You will.) In the old/current model, players spend money/hours/weeks/years building/buying/upgrading characters, inventories, ships, avatars, etc. And these digital assets are wholly owned & controlled by a corporation, which can go bankrupt, or change the rules of ownership, or kick you from THEIR servers at any time. Furthermore, while you can spend real money on buying THEIR IP , you cannot usually make money on their servers from building your own creations & artwork on their servers, and the few instances where you can are, again, subject to their rules, bans, & failures. In the new model, every digital creation is represented by an NFT, which is minted and stored on the blockchain, forever. It can be transferred, bought, sold, but never taken from you by a ban, or lost due to the gaming company shutting down a server or going bankrupt. That means you could mint an NFT of your WoW character, and that digital IP is permanent, cannot be deleted or denied, and if you're banned, you can sell it on the marketplace to another user. Same with weapons, armor, vehicles, avatars, voice packs. Many games will soon allow us to create these, use them, sell them, buy them, trade them. And we can buy NFT digital property, which allows us to create our OWN games and experience on that server, and share or charge for admission & use as we see fit. Painters & sculptors can create art galleries to sell NFTs and real world art pieces to buyers. Film students & animators can run VR theaters to showcase their short films & cartoons. Amateur fashion designers can showcase new clothes they have designed, and only fabricate what's been ordered. DJ's and bands can host live shows for fans. You are all whining about "capitalism" taking over "what should be free", when this system of NFTs is actually REMOVING THE CAPITALIST CORPORATE THIEVES FROM THE EQUATION, so that I can buy YOUR creation, and YOU get paid, instead of getting crumbs from those who monopolize the current marketplace. There are blockchain replacements in the works for everything you hate about greedy corporations: - ticketbastard will be replaced by a system that lets you pay for each show, virtual or IRL, directly to the artist. - Facebook will be replaced by an array of blockchain social media apps that allow you to decide what data you sell, and get paid for doing so (like Brave browser, but better). - Amazon will be replaced by an app that allows each manufacturer to sell directly to the customer. Delivery will be handled by drones that use the blockchain to compete to offer the lowest price for each package to your door. - Google will be replaced by a blockchain search engine that is incapable of altering or manipulating the results you see for any authority or company's special interests. And eventually, one day, governments will be replaced by DAOs, where we collectively, equally vote on each law, bill, or initiative, removing the corrupt shitty leaders we have now from the equation entirely. In 40-60 years, NFT's and blockchain alternatives will be the norm, and folks will tell horror stories about when we all used to slave away for hours building, working, creating value for OTHERS to profit from, while we paid inflated amounts for what we need and want in this world. And the kids will laugh and say "what idiots". Blockchain/NFTs can't solve every problem, but they will change our society as much or more than the internet did over the last 40 years. Maybe try to learn the fundamentals before passing judgements.

@@jephbennett What a lot of blathering about silliness...you're talking about creating original content within someone else's IP...these exist today, they're called 'mods'. Or, alternatively, you can create your *own* server and/or IP, and achieve the same thing as your long-winded rant. (And either way, end up hoping your ISP doesn't have some issue with you, cutting off your access to all these things).

I can't wait for metas competition comes out with a standalone headset, my quest 2 is nice but as long as it's attached to Facebook and their schemes I'll always be looking for alternatives. Even if it's china's standalone set

The PIMAX 12k will have standalone capabilities. I'm excited for it, but based on their track record, we'll have to see. The specs on it are insane though. 200 Hfov, 5760x3240 per eye, and 200Hz. I know there's not really a gaming PC build that can run it with these specs but I think they have something to help compensate with the VR station.The price is a lot, but with the specs, I'd expect it to be more expensive. Standalone specs are less at 8k/5k, 120Hz, 150Hfov. They will be launching their own standalone store with it as well as a VR station. I'm excited, but It's hard to be confident in their ability to get everything right. But even if it's close, should still be an amazing VR setup. Still, not sure I'll be able to budget one for a couple years after release date anyways, and by then we'll know if it's even worth it.

For the simula, i want it to be modifiable to let me do whatever- use the passthrough cameras or an attached camera/LIDAR for improved vision, a real world HUD, keep track of tasks, let me view a security cam footage of my shop's front door, and obviously some way to view my phone. The closed nature of other headsets means making a custom VR/AR headset applications can be tricky ,so having a base to start from would be cool.

I love the specs and open-source, right-to-repair forward-ness of the Somnium headset, but I'm a little scared about something. What if they were to integrate their already existing experience of owning land in vr into the headset? Requiring you, for example, to own a section of land in the vr space to use the headset. Kind of like, you have to own the land to use it in vr. Hopefully it's not like that.

There will no doubt be vendor bots selling most objects that are created for use on that server or within a particular VR social program, but there will possibly be people who are hiring others to interact with potential customers to boost sales and provide customer service. More importantly, there will be endless opportunities for musicians to perform without having to go on the road.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want superior controllers and tracking, go with the Index. But if you value clarity and resolution above all else, go with the HP Reverb G2. Besides, you can always upgrade the controllers on the G2 (using an admittedly convoluted method).

As someone who's pro crypto, I really don't see the point in this whole "virtual land" thing I've seen so many "metaverses" trying to create. A proper open source, decentralized 3D "metaverse" can solve many problems regarding socializing across the globe, new ways to work, new types of work, or just having some fun which is all good. Crypto solves one big problem with exchange by providing an open source, decentralized and trust-less way to make deals and trade, taking control away from banks and governments and giving it back to the people. What does scarce "virtual land" solve? Real land is valued because it's physically limited and we can't just magic more of it into existence. Virtual land tho? All you need for more of that is any computer, some storage and some electricity. You can get as much as your hardware can handle. Mega scam imo.

The way people make money off buying land is because the plots of "land" are NFT's based on the ether blockchain, making them unique digital assets, in reality, while they are technically unique they're still pretty worthless because the value of each NFT is based entirely on the success of the game and quite honestly, the game kinda sucks. Its just that most of the people buying it are actually investors looking to cash in on this "metaverse" they heard a lot about and don't actually know anything about the vr/ ar industry as a whole. TLDR: It's basically the shiba-inu of virtual reality.

I think the buying "land" translates to what art commissions are today on the web, as well as hosting; You pay for a specific thing, and more or less get what you requested, and then you put the data in a place you can see it. 3D models and rigging for avatars, virtual pets, houses, landscaping... Sure other people could haves something similar, or even identical if the buy wasn't exclusive(that'd cost extra). As media streaming is dominating now, it's less likely that you'd be the physical host of these worlds, and they've got to go somewhere. The use of crypto/NFT is the idea of decentralized hosting really, like a torrent file, it has more permanence, seeded by anyone connected, so long as there is anyone connected. _A dead world is literally no one there._ Centralized servers are expensive, probably meaning the land world actually be *more* expensive, as you rent the space. Also the fact that anything connected to an outside network can be hacked. Popular worlds and celebrities would paint a huge target for such.
@lilmrmagoo3 жыл бұрын
on the topic of virtual land i think the best way to do it is by having people run there own servers or buy server hosting and have that tie into the game that people have full access rather than limited access for the same thing.

On the buying digital land thing, I think a different lens to see it through is decentralized digital ownership vs the artificial scarcity. All the potential is in the ownership. The scarcity is a necessary part of the equation as well though. The land you buy is not going to be some static thing that does nothing. You can “develop” your land, provide exclusive experiences, monetize it in creative ways, similar to what you’d do as a content creator leveraging platforms like KZbin, Patreon, etc. If you generate enough attention brands might want to advertise on your property, and after you build it up, if you so chose, since it’s based on blockchain and through a crypto currency, you can sell your developed land in a decentralized way. The possibilities with this are kind of endless and that’s why a ton of venture money is being poured into this space. Unfortunately, I’d say no, VR is not going to be a world free of income inequality, but it will greatly improve and add a ton of functionality and new experiences to the internet.

Owning land, does create problems but it does make sense and of course there would be a market for it. Second life is a great example of how profitable it can be to own land in a digital space. As vr becomes more developed and more life like in some spaces... people are going to want permissions and control over their space... the best way to do that is to rent or sell full permission land ownership. It helps the company keep the data on their servers long term and the people have the security of knowing whatever they're using the space for will remain there safely for as long as they pay for it. I'd imagine it's also a great way for people that want to be in VR but for whatever reason can only be around certain people and have certain needs... it's a great way to create a safe space you can control but also make them feel included in the overall space. I don't know how advanced land ownership is in VR yet, but just taking a guess at where it's probably going from how other platforms handled it.

I prefer to have VR software to also be accessible or cross-playable in flat. We can sit around and talk about how exciting VR is all day but it will never be the same as having someone try VR. For me the next best way to show how exciting VR is without having access to a headset is just to play with someone playing in VR and seeing/hearing how excited they are. I think the cross-platform accessibility is a good stopgap between getting someone to put on a headset, the more exposure to VR the better for adoption by people that have only played flat.
