I don't get why someone wouldn't let their kids wear whatever they want (assuming it's weather appropriate). Also, every single christening outfit is a dress. Boys get christened in a dress. Big, typically frilly dresses. But your 4 year old wearing basically an oversized t-shirt is repulsive? Alright, crazy.

I feel like someone should show them pictures of families in the 17th century. Some pictures it looks like basically the whole family is dressed the same, with the only difference being the man of the house is the only one in any kind of breeches! I was just having this convo with someone the other day. It’s actually pretty recently that material with pant leg holes for children even became a thing. Dresses are what ppl used to dress any child and especially infant in, because it didn’t make sense to ppl to put pant legs on a child since they’re not efficient at using the toilet yet. It’s kinda crazy that it has turned into some ppl’s children can only wear things with pant leg holes.

Yeah, I know that sage is supposed to be cleansing, and many of them know it too, but Christian fundamentalists believe that any spiritual power or magical force that isn't coming straight from their god can only be coming from demons/satan. God's power is the only positive "magic." So by using sage, you're invoking a spiritual power that isn't from their god and inviting it to work inside your home. This can only mean that you have invited a trickster demon, masquerading as a cleansing energy, to take residence.

SO MUCH YES! but never has it excused the pain i caused other people. and i understand even when i apologize, people do not need to accept it until they see a change. and even once i did change, they still dont need to let me back into their life. im already too intense for myself many times, i do not blame others for not wanting to associate with me because of what ive said and done to them. my bad actions are just that: bad things i have done. and i have to do the work to make sure they dont happen again and when i feel like something bad may happen, i excuse myself and separate from the person until i am in a rational state and can talk. i keep my meltdowns and episodes to myself as much as possible, its nobodies responsibility but mine to deal with it.

@scragar
@scragar 3 ай бұрын
@Jade-ut1yr Unschooling as originally proposed was a great idea. School has a teacher stand at the front of the class and tell kids facts the kids don't care about. Unschooling has the parent find a way to make the kid want to know, then shows them how to find the answers on their own so the kid will learn independently and willingly. The idea being that kids learn better when they're interested in the subject, so encouraging the curiosity and learning skills makes for more effective teaching. It's not a bad concept. Where it goes wrong is all the people who heard the word, assumed it meant avoiding education, then decided that sounded like a good idea. It's not what unschooling was ever supposed to be.

Hi! I wanted to pitch in as someone who was homeschooled from pre-k all the way through to when I dropped put of highschool (I'm American). I comepletely agree that my mother should have had a background in teaching. And yes she did teach white Christian centric curriculums (which I have been unlearning), but when it came around to why we were allowed to be homeschooled, we would have to do standardized tests at the end of the year like most public schoolers had to (we had CATs, where as public schoolers had SATs). So we would send that off to the state and the state would send approval back to my mother to be like "yeah, they're exceeding. So you're allowed to homeschool still." And I grew up in a very homophobic and transphobic household, only for me to come out as trans and queer a year after I moved out because I finally felt safe to be myself. (I also had the internalized homophobia and transphobia that also had to be unlearned, because I grew up hearing that all the time.) And my friends who knew me after I moved, and have only known me as I am. Were like "That just proves that you didn't have any peer pressure to be queer. You just /are/."

While I feel like experiences will differ, I definitely feel like some parents should not be allowed to teach. I kind of get on board with the idea that if you're properly educating your kids and they're learning everything they need to be successful adults, you shouldn't have a problem with being required to prove it. As much as I'm not a fan in having someone come in to do an assessment every year to record their progress, it's only because it would be an annoying inconvenience, and not because I don't think it's a valid, possibly necessary measure. I mean, most people would rather not do a lot of things, like laundry and grocery shopping, but that doesn't mean we don't do them. But where homeschooling can be used as a tool for parents to indoctrinate their kids into hateful beliefs and to neglect a proper education for their kids, I feel like something like that is inevitably necessary.

@@seanarmstrong3788 ok so, each element has different forms that changes how they interact with the environment. Colloidal silver is the heavy metal and liquid form of silver. While some heavy metals are needed for body function in small doses (and I do mean small as in tiny doses) such as iron, zinc, copper and manganese, colloidal silver has more in common with the heavy metals like lead, mercury, and arsenic in that the body struggles to clear it and it has no direct biological use. If it’s not being used, and the body cannot clear it, the amount builds up to a level that is toxic. It’s harder to regulate the use of colloidal silver as the toxicity isn’t usually directly fatal, as I mentioned turning the skin blue, limiting kidney function and night vision are two others, they impact the quality of life, but not the duration. Some forms of silver are useful as anti-microbials in medicine, colloidal silver is not one of them, but hacks piggyback off the fact that it has silver in the name, and people’s ignorance of the difference to claim it works as it is cheaper to make than other forms of silver actually that have some proof behind the claims and are in limited actual medical use. I think the biggest irony here is some of the same people using colloidal silver are fear mongering about mercury in vaccines, which again is a difference in form and whether it’s active or inactive. Thimerosal has an inactive mercury component, it doesn’t interact directly with the environment so doesn’t cause the harm mercury would.

While I def agree about having parents be qualified in some way for homeschool, I think having homeschooling available is a valuable tool for many disabled kids who would be hurt and traumatized by the common school system that refuses to accommodate them, or do no harm. At least until public schooling is cured of ableism. Edit: I am not saying ALL public school is bad or ALL homeschooling is good. But, that taking away the option for a tailored and accommodating homeschooling to escape the ableism inherent in the system, especially in a school where the teachers have little power or the specific individuals are very ableist, is cruel and it's a complex issue. Every disabled and/or neurodivergent person's needs are different. Some of us like school, some of us would rather die than go. So there need to be thought through processes to help each student get what they need. I am in no way advocating for culty home schooling or indoctrination.

That's the main reason I was pulled out of public school. I'm autistic, have an anxiety disorder and have adhd and was pre-testing As/Bs at home and getting Cs/Ds at school due to stress and distractions, and the less said about my obsession with bugs the better, oh and I had the habbit of just... wandering off randomly because I saw something interesting. And yet, I "wasn't bad enough" for an aide. So mom pulled me out and it worked very well. She has always been my biggest advocate. And while we were a Christian family, that wasn't really the focus of what we were learning? We did use the Bible (specifically proverbs) for handwriting class, but otherwise, 🤷 Mom kept what we believed as Christians (which has since changed) and what we needed to know for school separate. We had actual textbooks, and mom searched and made sure and tried to find the ones that worked the best for each of us (half of us are neurodiverse, but so is mom) She was also very accepting of 3/4 of her kids being queer. Homeschooling also helped with dealing with scheduling doctors appointments, our therapies and if my stomach was misbehaving (common in autism and anxiety disorders), I could go rest and come back to my work later.

Yeah, that dig on Gay Pride irks me to no end. Two entire months are there, plus one or two days if I recall. Meanwhile, in the US, it starts with January 25th, the anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge; February 3rd, Four Chaplains Day, and February 9th for Guadalcanal; March has seven individual days plus the general month for veterans; Aprille 5th honors military families; May has four military-centered holidays; June is military PTSD month, plus six other days in June; July has Independence Day, and a day for veterans of the Korean War; August has three military-honoring days; September is another veterans' month, plus four distinct days; October 13th is the anniversary of the Navy; November is another entire month for veterans and military families, plus Veterans' Day on November 11th; and December has three whole days. There's a TON of ways to honor veterans during each year. So the in escapable conclusion is they don't actually CARE at all about veterans, they just like parroting Fox News and OANN talking points.

I had to take my mother's food stamps and other benefits as soon as they arrived, and made sure the rent/bills/groceries were bought before she spent most of it on beer, weed, and cigarettes for her and her boyfriend. Her boyfriend threw me out of the house because of this. He said it was because I was Bi (I didn't know I was actually Pan then), but that was a load of shit because my mom knew since I was 14 that I was, and her brother was gay! So I had to move suddenly to a different state where I had some other friends, and then had to become emancipated at 16 so I could work and be an adult... Even though I had been taking care of myself since kindergarten really. I really hope that teen can get out soon, for their own sanity.

When my mom was at a checkup with me as an infant, she expressed to the pediatrician that she was anxious she might not do enough for me - to make sure I had the right food, enough mental stimulation, etc. The pediatrician replied that her worries were a sign she was aware of how complex a child's needs are, and that she wanted to meet them. What *did* made the pediatrician concerned? Parents who thought babies were easy, and that they had everything figured out. Try to maintain that perspective and keep your child's needs at front of mind and you will be on a good path to not-terrible-parenthood! ❤

I was a homeschool kid, and i understand what you're saying about parents shouldn't be able to homeschool their kids if they don't have a teaching degree, but i'm glad it's not that way. I had very very intense trauma in 5th grade (i was forced into conversion therapy at my catholic school and was told i couldn't go by my preferred name because it meant death, and was scared into not talking about my special interest which was horror books, because they were gonna call CPS on my parents.) and then the year after in 6th grade, i was friends with horrible people, including racists, homophobes, and transphobes, and then in 7th grade, i just couldn't function in school. I was refusing to do homework, sobbing whenever i had to, skipping class to cry in the bathroom, using my phone in class, and my grades were slipping. If i kept going like that i would be dead now. I wouldn't have been able to live on having to do that daily, so i asked to be homeschooled, and honestly i'm pretty sure that saved my life. There are ways to be homeschooled without the parent teaching you. There are a lot of text books or videos or tutors that can be the teachers. If i wasn't able to be home schooled i'd be dead now, and i feel like a lot of neurodivergent or traumatized kids really benefit from homeschool, and if parents who wanted to homeschool had to have teaching degrees that would take away so many safe spaces for those kids.

@SarastistheSerpent
@SarastistheSerpent Жыл бұрын
Cognitive dissonance. Although in real life Jesus almost certainly did not have long hair. Long hair amongst Jews in Roman Palestine at the time was a sign that you had taken a Nazirite vow, and we know for a fact that Jesus definitely did not ever take one (Narirites abstain from alcohol, hair cutting and also coming into contact with ritual impurities, like sick or dead people, and we know that Jesus drank wine and routinely interacted with both the sick and the dead). Early Christian artwork always depicts Jesus with short hair. Long haired Jesus was a Byzantine invention in the 6th and 7th centuries AD, likely in an effort to make Jesus look more like Zeus/Jupiter or Poseidon/Neptune, similar to how medieval depictions of Satan made him goat-like in reference to the Greco-Roman god Pan. Jewish men in Jesus’ era did wear dress-like tunics though. Men wore knee length ones while women wore ankle length ones.

Just wanted to say something a bit on the homeschooling, we are a homeschooling family here in Canada we are monitored by the school division as to what needs to be learned in each grade. We are what is called a secular homeschooling family (aka none faith based) and honestly one of the biggest struggles is finding curriculum that isn’t faith based cause sadly I found a lot of those to be very lacking but when done correctly homeschool kids can actually be very much advanced so please don’t group all homeschoolers with those groups, some of us are teaching the exact same thing they would be learning in public school just at home and do it this way for the health and well being of our kids. Plus sadly here in Canada if you go to school for teaching that doesn’t actually amount to what it might where you are, all it means is you might get a higher pay. Most of those hired with the school division are very terrible at their job and kids don’t learn anything, and sadly here you don’t get to choose your focus. In high school our amazing art teacher ended up being our English teacher, she was an immigrant from Greece so English isn’t her first language and she was terrified that we would all not be able to graduate due to the fact she wasn’t able to teach us what was required, we used to get bonus points for helping her convert words to English. Like everything in life there is pro’s and con’s but homeschooling when done right can be amazing, the difference in my kids between public and homeschool truly is night and day, they are excelling in ways they just couldn’t in public due to cut backs and issues. The school systems in North America are so fricken sad and I say this as someone who very much wanted to be a teacher when I grew up 😞 Just wanted to give you a bit of perspective from a homeschooling family ☺️

This is why homeschooling in the US scares me. There isn’t a lot of oversight and for the most part, it’s just fundamental Christians not wanting their children to grow up knowing anything they don’t have control over and we end up with more fundie Christians that don’t have an education passing a middle school level.
@sam.b.10

I’ve heard how much worse it is in the states… in Canada you are enrolled with the local school district and you have to prove that your child is up to par with where they should be, even if behind(speaking from experience as our child had some undiagnosed conditions) we provided that we paid for an evaluation by a professional, what they recommended and provided a plan on how we were going to support their needs so they could reach the level they needed in time. We still have religious families here more often then not but that’s actually changing, lots of secular homeschoolers now a days! But they still need to be able to pass exams and such no matter what curriculum you choose. thankfully there is more and more great resources for secular families coming out that has been so awesome, some even designed by teachers (and public schools use in their classes rooms!) so I purchase those! It honestly blows my mind some the stories of what I’ve heard some fundie families “teach” and don’t teach. Literal child abuse… we have freedom but at the same time we still very much teach or we are held accountable for failing at our responsibility of not providing a full education.

Unfortunately in the US we have such a teacher shortage due to low pay and risk of violence that several states are trying to reduce the requirements for teachers, often suggesting solutions such as completely untrained military veterans. Just throw em in the classroom, no training on how to be a teacher or the subject they'll be teaching, it'll be fine. While I do think homeschooling should be more regulated, and in many states you have to report curriculum and test scores, for some it's the best option due to risk of gun violence and pushing conservative homophobic and transphobic views on children and teaching them inaccurate history of our country. I went to a very progressive school in a very progressive state (California) and I still hardly learned any of our history before the colonies were established or many of the horrible things this countries government has done and what little I did learn was sugar coated even when I was old enough to know. And the state I live in now feels entirely unsafe to send children to public school, it's open carry openly bigoted conservative suburbs and my child doesn't deserve to have their personal and cultural identity undermined by adults they're instructed to trust. Sadly the religious bigots who use homeschooling to indoctrinate their children have paved the way for people like me who try keep my children as far away from any of that as possible. And the way they did that is by stripping regulations on homeschooling any way they could, which depressingly leaves the door wide open for that kind of abuse. The simple answer would the US having a solid educational system not swayed by political lobbyists but unfortunately we don't have that, so we don't have a simple answer to such a complex problem.

My province in Canada, Ontario, has an education minister that went to private Catholic school (where a group of boys SAed two different students with a broom while recording it) and his assistant was home-schooled in a very regressive religious community.

When I first got glasses it was mainly for headaches because I could still see pretty good. Or so I thought! Once I got the glasses, I realized how fuzzy things had actually gotten!! Im glad you're getting your eyes checked! Even if its just a mild rx it could help a lot! ❤

Why in all holy green hell was it so important to that mother to know the color of their child's private body hair? To the point of pressing the issue to harassment? That's beyond weird.

My dad has done SO many things far far worse than this example, but he once sent me multiple paragraphs explaining how I was a liar, telling me he’d pass out papers to everyone in my school starting rumors about me and make everyone there hate me. Telling me the next time I came there he’d burn all of my stuff. And telling me he’d verbally abuse me when I went back. Even though he was calling me every horrible name you could think of (dumb@ss, things like that) and after all of that, he sent me an empty apologies, because he’s doing it again currently.. and I didn’t even read all of it.

I agree about the homeschooling without a degree, my mom went to college and got a masters in early childhood education to homeschool us as KIDS. And then when we were older we went ot school. She just wanted us to be able to appreciate learning as young kids, so we'd like doing when we were older. Dont homeschool if you couldnt get hired to teach ✨

the ‘i dont believe in glasses’ gets me so bad because constantly straining your eyes also DAMAGES your eyes in the process. seriously. it’s why you’re not supposed to read in low light - you strain your eyes so much, you can risk doing permanent damage and/or furthering any previous genetic or otherwise condition. “they’re a crutch for your body” no they are literally fixing what would otherwise be a disability. i have a -6 prescription in both eyes, and a -5 is what earns disability without glasses. if anyone ever told me my glasses were “a crutch” i think id move to the other side of the world before interacting with them again.

On the homeschooling thing, you can hire a tutor. But I'm actually for the idea of assessments for homeschooling. It becomes financially prohibitive to require teaching degrees unless it's free. However, I can honestly say that my kids learned way more from me before I had my GED than they were learning in schools. That's where I have an issue. School in the US is pretty much babysitting with a few educational perks. Buy I'm also in the very small camp of people who would be fine with my kids having to have formal assessments. But my high school kid is doing the same things I'm doing in college (because he's learning with me) where in a traditional school he didn't have a clue how to write a proper argument, how to do a citation, or how to write a proper sentence! But... for that record, religious homeschooling? Is issues...

personally, i doubt that someone who didn’t finish high school could teach a high schooler without more education. obviously you’re in college now and it worked when they were way younger before that, but if you hadn’t gotten more education he’d be missing a ton. i’m dual enrolled in college and high school (i’m 16) and my parents who went to grad school can’t help me with my homework anymore. my dad can help me with physics because he’s an engineer and my mom can help me with some math (before precalc anyways) but when i took AP chemistry, my dad had no clue what was going on even though he took it and other chemistry classes like ochem in college. they can’t help me with AP Bio or AP Spanish, or my college history and english classes. if i asked my mom what an expository essay was, she’d have no clue. my dad probably couldn’t even spell expository essay. i’m glad it’s working for you but i feel like there is a level of education you just can’t reach with homeschooling. you really can’t homeschool an AP class, at least not enough for a student to get a 5 on the test. a homeschooled student more than likely has a great disadvantage on the SAT and ACT. not to mention the social aspect. i have zero friends outside of school, and no clue how i’m supposed to meet people otherwise. public school isn’t great but it’s so much better than nothing. it’s bad for their health for sure, im living the consequences, but it’s a much more secure academic path to get a high paying intellectual job. which isn’t everyone’s future, everyone should have the opportunity to if they want that. if my parents weren’t so academically inclined, i wouldn’t have an internship or do well on the PSAT or volunteer or do so many arts or take so many AP classes or be dual enrolled. and if i wanted to start now, it would be too late and i wouldn’t get into any top schools. i’m sure homeschooling works for some but i feel like public school really tests their potential so they can succeed.

@imawakemymindisalive13 You seem to underestimate the ability to be self-taught. Math, there is the option for curriculum and tutors if my kids pass me by, but so far it hasn't been an issue. Additionally, I dropped out of high school for medical reasons, but before that it was too easy and I was bored. I never studied. I never did my homework. However, I aced all my tests. My family pushed me to write papers with college level citations and research by 6th grade. I stopped being challenged in school at that point, so I was bored out of my mind. Even college level courses are dull and not challenging, but I'm doing it because the piece of paper matters more than your sum total of knowledge. You can't simply judge what a person is capable of doing based on a limited, personal experience. My kids are involved in activities outside of schools, which is why they have friends. Many colleges seek out homeschooled kids because they have a reputation of being highly motivated and working to high standards. I work with a couple of people who were homeschooled and are now in college who can corroborate that this was their experience as well. For some people it is a better option than public schools, which don't have a good reputation, especially with kids who find the work on their grade level too east or pick up the content quickly. At the end of the day, some students do well in school, where others are a better fit for alternative options, like homeschooling or tutors. Some schools have great programs, while others are lazy and graduate kids who don't even know how to read their senior year. Some homeschool families are dedicated to ensuring their children have a solid, well rounded education, while others don't teach their kids, or leave huge gaps for religious reasons. The "standards" in both the public school system and the homeschool oversights in the US consistently fail students. Honestly, there needs to be a better assessment than the SAT or the ACT, because doing well on a test doesn't necessarily measure how successful a student will be. It only proves they can take a test. There needs to be more universal and more practical proof of a student's abilities. If I can educate myself with no college to the degree people are shocked when they find out I didn't even have my GED, never mind the masters most people assumed I have, that proves you can be knowledgeable enough without a fancy piece of paper. And when I can get my kid to complete more work in one hour than the trained teachers at his school could get out of him in three months, that proves that a teaching degree doesn't mean you can actually teach a child. That's why we homeschool, because my kids were getting passed on to the next grade without ever having proven they mastered the skills to get there. When I get calls from the school telling me to stop teaching my kids at home because they can prove the teacher wrong, that's a problem. I feel there's too much emphasis on things like AP classes. There isn't anything so special about them that the information cannot be learned through other means. The only area where this might be true is science, as having access to a lab is required for certain hands-on learning. This is why science centers and the like exist to teach homeschool (and really any interested) students. Tutors can be hired or classes online can be found for subjects a student doesn't know. My homeschooled kids seem to have more social lives than their peers in school do, and have healthier relationships than they did with their friends in school. I guess what I'm saying is this is not a situation that can be laid out in such a simple way. It's a complex issue, requiring a complex answer. A teaching degree doesn't mean you can actually teach well, at least not in the US. Not having a degree doesn't mean you don't have the ability to teach. However, in both cases, there needs to be more proof of successful learning by the student and that they're not just victims of education neglect, no matter where they're educated, home or in school. That's where I take issue, that kids can be taught all kinds of misinformation or not taught at all with the way things are, and that's a huge problem.

@wmdkitty All well and good but... super classist. If the schools are failing the kids and the family doesn't come from money, they need to find an income to get a degree (that doesn't actually ensure people know how to teach in the first place in the US...) so poor kids get failed by the system? That is such an elitist view. And what about families that don't have time to get an education degree because they trusted the school system, which failed their kids? It's all well and good to say parents need to spend money to ensure their kids are educated, but half of the resources can come from free sources, like the library. There's solid, free curriculum offered online, and inexpensive resources produced by teachers.

@wmdkitty Also, it's BAD when two years into my degree and all I've learned is the busy work doesn't end with high schools. I've learned more from my own personal research and finding actually good lectures on KZbin than I have from my classes. If you want parents to invest to educate their kids, maybe make sure they're not wasting their money... And this is from someone who was getting an education so I could teach, but with the violence against teachers allowed in schools and the rate of teachers quitting, there are bigger issues to address here if kids are going to get a proper education. Fix the schools and maybe parents would feel the need to pull their kids from school, because kids shouldn't be graduating high school if they can't read or write a clear argument, and teachers shouldn't be quitting because they have no course of action when students are assaulting then in the classroom. But no, I guess it's easier to talk about how only people with money should homeschool...

Speaking of parents not wanting to get their child glasses, my dad didn't either (something about me just wanting them and not actually needing them). Thankfully my school issued a serious notice to him because turns out, if he had waited another year or two, I would have lost my vision completely in one eye. Like permanently blind. At 8 years old. Now as an adult, I am just now able to not be scared of going blind....just now. I can't imagine what that mother is thinking or how that child is.

My father didn’t believe I needed glasses. Even tried to convince me to take my driver’s test without them (so that I wouldn’t have the requirement of glasses on my license). Still to this day he asks me if I really need them. Thank goodness I had a mom who believed me when I said I couldn’t see certain distances away.
