We had a 19ft Burmese female growing up. It was the most chill snake ever, basically had free roam of my sisters room, but she was an adult when we got her and was always fed live food. We couldn’t really stomach that so we’d have to put her in her cage and wiggle a dead rat or rabbit for her, and it was always terrifying, but she was smart enough to know when it was time to go in her cage it was time to eat. If she went in there to drink or bathe though you’d have to stay away or she’d strike at anything that moved. Once she was out of her csge she was completely harmless and cuddly

I've got what might be the world's chompiest Ball Python, but he only does it because he's also the world's HUNGRIEST ball python. Boy has a Boa appetite, but when he's not in food mode? he's a sweetheart. The trick is the Snake Hook. Lift him into the air with that and he goes, "Oh? Playtime? Not food time? Oh. Cool."

Good call not listing hognoses, imho. I'm still convinced they will never bite defensively, but I've gathered from reading about other keepers' experiences that they're hungry little buggers and will take a chomp eventually. Same thing with rosy boas. Mine tried to eat my friend! Always wash hands with any snake, preferably with some scented soap, and they probably won't try to eat you. All that said, a couple of my hognoses act super angry sometimes and they only headbutt. :D

Can absolutely attest to spotted pythons! I admit I don't handle mine as much as I should, and yet every time I go to take her out she never even tries to bite. I got her as an adult and I don't know much of her history (only that she was part of a large collection being sold on behalf of someone getting out of the hobby) so whether she was socialized young or just is naturally a pleasant snake is up in the air. Either way she's a joy to interact with and a credit to her species as pets!

It's good to mention that most of small snakes even if they bite they don't have enough force for bite to hurt. It's more like a smack with sharper than usual velcro. Examples are corn snakes, garter snakes and other small colubrids, Lampropeltis have a bit stronger jaws than corn snake for example.

They're called ball pythons because their first defense is turning into a ball followed by fleeing or musking, biting is far down the list for them.

I’ve NEVER had a ball python even open it’s mouth to EVER. I have, however, been bitten once by my female bearded dragon. I have been bitten twice by female rats…but never a ball python. I kind of don’t trust Burmese pythons…I’m sure they’re great…but they are crazy big and make me uncomfortable…so I’ll pass on them and retics. The largest I will go is a rainbow boa.

As kids, we used to handle wild garter snakes, and typically, they didn't even musk. None of us ever got bit by one. We were, of course, not handling them every day, but in general, a lot of garter snakes are just wired to flee anyway. They were breathing a little heavy for a few seconds when we lifted a rock. No striking and no real hostility. We were just wild kids, so we didn't know we shouldn't mess with the rocks back there, but eh, it was our backyard, so it's really not like we were in the woods harassing the wildlife in a bad way. Those rocks were fair game. Since in the wild they were chill, I would say the domestic well handled garters are even more chill. Those were I believe a north-eastern ribbon garter breed that we kids were checking out. Always let them go after naturally. I wouldn't say they are more friendly than the list, but man if there was a number 6 or 7, I'd but them there with the egg eaters

Though I’ve been bitten more by wild caught eastern milk snakes, because they’re native to my work area and I’ll catch and release them when I see them. But I reckon wild caught shouldn’t count. As far as captive, my green tree python nipped me twice, but she was a bit stressed out, I was helping her shed. She’s a sweetheart any other time. Though I’ve heard otherwise from other GTP keepers.

After over 20 years working in a Reptile zoo in the Northeast ( the best reptile zoo in the country for 60 years) I found that the individualism really shines through. I have had many Burmese, ball, rock, blood and reticulated python bites, tons of bites from common boas (BCI) and red tail, Dumeril's, rainbow and tree boas. Rat snakes, kingsnakes, milksnakes, garter snakes, and of course a Western diamond back, a gila monster and a red spitting cobra. Also a few alligator and crocodile bites. My worst bite, by far, was a prairie dog (on live tv for a full minute) followed by the red spitter. The gila monster bite was the painful, but there was no treatment other than time. A few days of pain and swollen hand.

I came up with a system where I thaw her meal upstairs,then burn a little sage around her enclosure before bringing it down, in something sealed, then drop it in as far away as possible, and haul ass. And I have many snakes and I’ve been doing this for years. And no matter what I do with her, she just likes to bite. It doesn’t bother me any like I said I’ve been doing this for years. I usually laugh when it happens. She’ll be cool for a while and you’ll think she’s comfortable and she’s OK and then all of a sudden wham. When I first got her around three years ago, she tried to eat my pinky. She had the first section of my pinky all the way in her mouth. It took me a little while to get her get her to release. I thought she was going for it. I finally got her to let go by blowing in her face. She just likes to bite. There is always exceptions to any rule.

Rubber boas (Charina bottae) are very interesting. Sadly, rarely kept in Europe anymore. Very similiar to earth pythons (Calabaria reinhardtii), they have a very protected skin as they target as nest predators baby mammals/get attacked by parent animals & use the tail for distraction too. They have collagen fibre reinforcement via a transverse storage. Sadly those are equally rare.

The more I learn about boas the more I want one. bCI or dumerils are most appealing to me, but I struggled to find space for my ball pythons 4x2x2. I think I need a bigger house to get all the snakes and lizards I want. 😅 Seriously I have a long list, and I've considered a rack system but I'm not sure how I feel about it and the quality of life. I wish I could have a reptile room, that would be absolutely epic.
@karyannfontaine87578 ай бұрын
Ball Pythons seem to do very well in a rack system. They love small dark spaces as they feel secure. Boas can grow larger than a Ball Python and are more active sometimes. Time consuming, expensive to keep lots of snakes. Temperature, humidity, fresh water, rodents, plus the house upkeep if plumbing, electrical malfunctions. The larger the house the more problems, I know from living in my house. Well, if you are up for a challenge and have a strong mind, go for everything you want. I did.

"top 5 snake that will definitely for sure bite you", finally a list where the carpet python can feature on. Most snakes, you get a feed bite if you smell of what you feed them, my carpet python, food bite if you smell of roast pork. As always, get a food bite, don't panic, go get the mouth wash, and just watch how quick they change their mind. Though, a properly socialised carpet python rarely gets defensive, just have to watch out for that super food motivation they have.

I'd say garter snakes in general. A food motivated spotted or children's python will easily bite (strike first hoping for food and ask questions later), but garters seem like they will think a bit more about what's in front of them and not as easily fooled into thinking a human is food (just don't lather your fingers in worms and then wiggle in front of their face - but even then it would be rare to trick them into thinking your fingers are food). Sure, garters that are not handled much will musk, but rarely ever bite. Now, for the calmest and least bitey of all garter species, my vote is for Plains garters (Thamnophis radix).

One I would throw out there is a Madagascar cat eyed snake, it’s a smaller rear fanged colubrid that’s like if you crossed a mangrove snake with a garter snake. I’ve had one since last April and she doesn’t even attempt to bite me! One thing I noticed that’s common among keepers of these is it you don’t have live pinky mice you have to assist feed them. But that I mean just helping the baby mouse into her mouth and she’ll take it from there. Also the only weirdo I have that NEEDS to be in my hand as she eats then she will go back in her enclosure after the food gets to her stomach. She’s also legal in Alberta as she’s not quite a boiga but a similar family. 100% got her because she’s mildly venomous, but if I do get bit it’ll be guaranteed from a feeding accident
