It's time to jump straight on the hype train, the toroidal prop hype train that is! Foxeer recently released the first mass produced toroidal design prop for the FPV community, their donut prop, but does that mean everyone should run out and switch right now?

I would suspect that these props are at their most useful in midspeed cruise flight, not high speed stunting. In the toroidal props for boats, they offer very little difference for full throttle; the big difference is at minimum planing speed, where they are ~50% more efficient. So these props are likely designed for basically efficient long-range medium-speed travel.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Жыл бұрын
I totally agree with you!!! As long as you are buying them for something you plan to cruise and not crash, they are actually a really good option :)

I just bought these props. They are very interesting and unique. At first, your surprised props that look like that can fly. Then you put them to the test. Although they don’t cut through the air as well as traditional props (meaning you have less traction), they do however make your quad roll extremely well. I could roll extremely well without loosing altitude. Also, the pitch or noise is slightly less annoying than traditional props.
@BaconNinjaFPV

I think we had the same thoughts on them! They are kind of cool and unique, although daily driving is kind of out of the question with durability, but still. I was pretty surprised at how well they performed, and I really did like the lower pitch of the noise they make. I would love to find a tri blade prop that had this flight feel because I would switch to it in a heart beat!

@@BaconNinjaFPV I did pay $270.00 to have tri blade version of this prop 3D printed. They where much worse than donut propellers, meaning they did not grip the air very well. It was very hard to do rolls and flips and motors got hot. Also, noise was no different than traditional tri blades, like my dalprops.

They are fun to play with for sure! I was very surprised at how well they flew, just wish they could hold up to crashes a little better...but just a limit of the design I suppose.

lol, they for sure didn't intend for the idea to be applied to this size of prop or use case. Im sure for what they are doing with it, things make sense....we just went a little crazy with the idea and tried to apply it to way too much.

My issue with the toroidal prop thing is that the MIT findings were for a particular toroidal prop, not all toroidal props. All these props that have very little in common with the MIT props ae just kind of silly. And even if they did all the things that were promised they would be mostly for long range stuff and maybe things like dji drones or cinelifters where you want them quieter. Unfortunately these foxeer props deliver on pretty much none of the promise.
@BaconNinjaFPV

I totally agree!! It is cool that they gave these a shot and they are a fun novelty to play with, but absolutely not what the original design had in mind and for a totally different use case. These would be great for some things....just not the things some of us are doing with them, lol.

It's more a matter of weigt distribution and distance from the center. Farther you go faster the tip of the propeler will go in a linear / angular speed. Then the centrifugal force tend to push harder and make the propeler stiffer. I'm not a native English speakers excuse my poor English

Wow, those flimsy tip ends! I wonder if any of that lower pitched noise and efficiency loss is just from those tips being too flimsy and vibrating? It seemed like so much was claimed for hemorrhoidal, er toroidal, prop design.
@BaconNinjaFPV
@BaconNinjaFPV Жыл бұрын
lololol...hemorrhoidal! It would be awesome to get some props on suuuuuuuper slow mo and see what the tips actually do in flight. I think the efficiency loss is mostly just due to them being 5", but the design itself really lends its best characteristics to something a little larger. Those tip ends really are the easiest to break I have ever seen though.

I printed a set of 3.5in 3blade props. With low expectations, I did a hover test and it did in fact get off the ground, but the motors were stinking hot after a few seconds and they were so out of balance... as expected. Im wondering though if they were to make them out of a softer plastic than PC if they would do OK

Very interesting and informative video. I threw a set in an order of elrs receivers. I intended them for a mid weight 5" cruiser. I'm using MCK 2207 2100kv motors on 5S. I was curious if these would be quieter and more efficient. I'll definitely heed your warning if I do bang them up in a mishap. Stay greasy everyone 🥓😎

Did you know that Betaflight has an "efficiency" OSD element? Requires a GPS but I use this to help figure out (a) what prop/setup is most efficient, and (b) what speed gives me most efficiency on that setup. 🤿

I sure did!!! It almost...and I do mean almost...made me want to put a GPS on my quad, lol. At the moment I only have GPS on two of them since I never really trust it or use it in flight, but some of the newer models are looking promising. Maybe I will have to give that setting a shot sometime soon!
