For me it's a missed call. End of the game in the 88 finals. A phantom foul gets called on the Pistons which sent Kareem to the line to win the game. That foul doesn't get called and the Pistons 3 peat and go back to back VS the Lakers to close out the decade. It changes the whole narrative of the 80s. Now it's not just the Celtics and Lakers era, but it's the Pistons era too. Magic gets 4 rings, Bird gets 3 and Isiah gets 3. The Pistons have to have some more respect (because still to this day that Pistons team is under appreciated) and Isiah's name gets thrown in the conversation when people talk about Magic VS Bird in the 80's, or Lakers VS Celtics.

Heck, Pistons got robbed in Game 7 as well, and that could actually qualify as a "what if a missed shot went in?" scenario, with the Pistons taking a final, desperation shot when down 3. Oh, and Lakers fans were storming the court before they even started bringing it up, AND Magic bumped Isiah as he was shooting. If THAT shot goes in, it's at least going to OT, and if the foul gets called, there's a chance for a walk-off and-1.

@@user-vw5ng6ds7x I guess it depends on your metric for success. Personally, I don't put much on the number of rings. I look at how a player performs and if they can perform at the highest levels of pressure. Look at Dirk Nowitzki and Charles Barkley. Dirk has a ring, but fell apart in the playoffs many times. Charles Barkley was much more consistent and had huge games even going up against the Bulls in the finals. Both are some of the greatest power forwards to ever play the game. Is Dirk better than Barkley? Not in my mind. Everyone has their own values. I am constantly looking at players in different ways. I don't even think that there is a singular GOAT. Because how you look at it, could elevate certain players over others.

Naz Reid rimming out that 3 in Game 2 of the WCF this year could have shifted the momentum for that series, potentially giving Ant a shot at a Kobe-like start if they make it to the Finals. I certainly felt like Minnesota was deeper -- 2 All-stars, 1 DPOY, 1 6MOY. On paper, it sounds like a better matchup against Boston's 2 All-Stars, 2 All-Defensive players than what Dallas offered.

I don't think Minnesota would've done any better than Dallas. TWolves defense was huge to their success this year but wouldn't be as strong against Boston's five out offense. Porzingis' pick and pop and spacing would negate Gobert's rim protection. Defensively Boston's ability to switch everything would fuck up Minnesota's pick and roll game, just like they did to Dallas. They can clog driving lanes with their size and have Jrue pester Ant all game. Put Tatum on Gobert and let him switch with Jrue on screens. Takes away the lob and doesn't allow any easy matchups for Ant to exploit
@BoogalooBartholomew
@BoogalooBartholomew Ай бұрын
@@nolanrussell6326 Here's where I give Minnesota a chance, however so slight: Tatum has to guard KAT (And yes, the counter is KAT has to guard Tatum) KAT's inside out ability gives Minny a weapon Dallas didn't have and KAT has the ability to get a star player in foul trouble. Maybe that takes Boston out of their rhythm enough for Minn to take advantage,.

Jonny's breakdown on Stockton's shot is great, and I totally agree (not the first time he's talked about it on this channel) But nobody talks about (and I would **love** to see a video about) the following season If the Bulls lose, there's a very good chance Jordan doesn't retire. Took it personal, etc. Phil Jackson was gone no matter what, but with MJ coming back the Bulls probably would have kept the core of Jordan/Pippen/Rodman Even in the weird lockout-shortened season, the Bulls would still have been the favorites to win the East and go to the Finals . . . where they would have met the Duncan/Robinson Spurs I've never seen anyone do a breakdown on the "what if?" of that series--which was maybe only a single Stockton 3-pointer away from happening. Raptors very likely wouldn’t have a championship. People could potentially look at both Embiid and Simmons very differently. That one shot almost sends the 76ers into a post-season tailspin that they are still trying to break out of. Maybe they go to the finals? Maybe GS suffers the same injuries? Maybe Emiid/ Simmons/ Butler all have titles under their belt at this point. Maybe they aren’t able to beat Giannis and the bucks in the ECFs. Maybe Giannis makes it to the finals and wins. He could have already been a bonafide top 15 all-time player at this point with 2 titles, 2 MVPs and a DPOY. And last but not least, what if the Warriors beat either of the other two East teams? Maybe they don’t get down early in the series and rush back KD? Three-peating would likely put Steph in line with Kobe, plus he would have already had 1 finals MVP before the turn of the decade. It’s almost certainly the most impactful “what-if” shot, that actually went in, during my lifetime

I remember Bird missing that shot. The world was in shock, because Larry rarely missed a game winning shot. It was almost unheard of!!!! What most people do not know is that 1987 may have been Bird's greatest season. That year, Ainge, McHale, Parish, and Walton were injured throughout the regular season and playoffs. Walton missed almost every game that year. And yet, Bird dragged the Celtics to the NBA Finals for a fourth consecutive year. It showed how great Bird was. Detroit and the Lakers had a lot more talent and energy that year, but the Celtics still had Bird, making Boston almost unstoppable. Most young fans have no idea how talented the Showtime Lakers were.

Excellent video, Jonny! All of the shots you shared are definitely great what ifs. I am a Jordan fan, and I have my doubts about the Bulls winning a game 7 against the Jazz in 98. Jordan, IMO, would put up an epic performance. But, with an injured Pippen, I don't see him carrying them to a game 7 victory. One what if in my mind is what if Webber made the last second 3 point shot against Minnesota in the 2004 playoffs. I don't know who would win if Sac faced LAL in 04 (I can see it going either way) and beating Detroit would've been tough. But, what if CWebb made it and what if the Kings won it all in 04? That would impact Webber's legacy and the Kings. It definitely is a stretch (I honestly think that if LAL did not beat them, the 04 Pistons would have), but it has come to mind at times. Nice video again. Have a wonderful weekend, Jonny! 😊

Can’t give credibility to any basketball player that deserves it and always critically talk shit about basketball players. They don’t like they can never keep it on bias. They can never keep their emotions out of it. It’s always LeBron’s a bitch or he sucks or Jamal Murray sucks or shit like that. I am so appreciative of your channel, bro The fact that you can enter the conversations and narratives without having to be bias is so refreshing.. because these guys talk basketball nowadays from ESPN down to the KZbinrs it is fucking pathetic and trash and it’s created an entire toxic network of basketball to where none of the grades are going to get their respect because they’re constantly being diminished by another so that one great can be propped up better than the other one

Kobe's GM 6 buzzer beater vs Phoenix in '06. If he makes it the Lakers advance 4-2 as a #7 seed and go on to face the Clippers (a team Kobe virtually owned) and then the Mavs who had no answers for the Mamba (or for Wade apparently). So possibly Kobe could have faced Shaq in the '06 Finals. Hey, it is a "what if" scenario...

I agree. Would’ve cemented himself as clear cut better than Kobe, Bird, and Magic. Lebron’s Goat argument would be very weak with 3 rings (one with a superteam, one with many injuries and ejections, and the bubble ring). Crazy to think about

@@carlosmiyagishima513 Duncan honestly is already better than Kobe though... Same amount of rings but more FMVPs and MVPs (Duncan - 3 FMVPs Kobe - 1, Duncan - 2 MVPs, Kobe -1), more all defense selections, never had a season where he has a losing record and didn't know what missing the playoffs is all about, more rebounds, blocks, and steals than Kobe all time, Kobe only clears him in points obviously so yeah...

I think about that Horry shot all the time.. game 5. My conclusion has always been that SAS did wax LA in game 6 so it was likely that the outcome of the series doesn't change either way... but it def would make for a different dynamic going into game 6 up 3-2 v. down 2-3. We'll never know... Also, do the Lakers get past the Mavs in the WCF? Nowitzki got hurt and didn't play in like the last 3 games on that series so does he not get injured against LA? So many different what ifs!!!

Jimmy Butler’s missed gamewinning 3pt shot in 2023 ECF. We had so many wing defenders that we could throw at curry and klay, Bam could slow Wiggins down. Plus our big wouldn’t of gotten abused playing drop coverage against Curry, definitely would’ve been a great series

For me it’s a Free Throw. Dirk was at the line to tie the game in the winding seconds vs Heat in 06. He missed. But I still think if he tied the game, sent it to OT. Mavs potentially go up 3-0 and win a chip

2013 NBA Finals Game 6, both Ginobli and Kawahi missed the first of two free throws in the final minute. If either of those went in San Antonio wins the game in regulation and the Finals. In Game 7 Duncan had a running hook and a follow-up tip that if they went in would have tied the game in the final minute. Miami ended up winning by 7 but if either of those shots go in by Duncan who knows what would have happened in that final minute.

It's not a shot that was missed, but one that was actually made: The Logo's 60 foot buzzer beater to tie up Game 3 of the 1970 Finals. It sent the game to OT which the Knicks ended up winning, but if it was ten years in the future, it would've been three-pointer, and the Lakers would've won the game, AND taken a 2-1 series lead, and had a huge momentum swing. A huge "what if?" Excellent video.

Game 7 of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals, Knicks lead Pacers 91-90. Reggie Miller has a long two point opportunity with about six seconds to go that he ended up airballing, and of course when the Pacers intentionally fouled there was a controversial flagrant that sealed the victory for the Knicks. Sure, if Reggie makes that shot the Knicks would've had a chance to win with the last shot, but if the Pacers win they would've had a decent chance to beat the Rockets. Rik Smits was a tough matchup for Hakeem, and the Pacers DID split the season series with the Rockets that year (winning IN Houston, no less), not to mention that they had had the best record in the league after that year's All Star Break. If the Pacers steal a championship in 1994, who knows what that does for their confidence going up against the Magic in the 1995 ECF (a series that also went to seven games)?

It’s not really one shot, but just the last minutes of game 7 in the 2016 finals. Iguadala’s layup being blocked (Lebron blocked that clean but his other hand did hit the rim) then Steph missing the three, kyrie hitting one, the stupid foul on kyrie, then Lebron hitting at the line. It was so close the entire time. And if the warriors won there they would have gone 4 in a row. Curry would have another ring and most likely a fmvp years earlier. The 2016 warriors would be one of the greatest teams of all time. Kyrie would be ringless, and Lebron would have another finals loss. Never getting the Cavs a chip.

Not necessarily a missed shot but a no call. 2015 ECSF game 4 Cleveland attempted to call a timeout despite not having any remaining. Had an official caught it a technical foul been would have been assessed. And instead of the eventual lebron game winner, Chicago wins, goes up 3-1 and has a great shot at making the ECF where they probably beat the Hawks like the Cavs would do. Rose leading the Bulls to a finals appearance when it looked like his prime days were just about gone would have been legendary. Idk if they beat Golden state but beating the Lebron and the Cavs in the first year of the big 3 would have been very reminiscent of the 2011 finals (although to my memory Lebron didn’t play nearly as bad)

Not a Finals series, but 1986 round 1, game 2, Bulls vs Celtics.. what if MJ hit the 3 at the end of the 4th quarter instead of being fouled on the 3 and getting to shoot only 2 free throws. Series would have been tied 1-1 going back to Chicago game 3 with an amped up Bulls/MJ. Possible Chicago wins and MJ has the notch under his belt of beating 5 hall of famers at such a young age.... but if that happens, we also dont have the 63pt game. As he was not close to that at the end of regulation
