For those who were wondering about the stories behind the monks: the one on the left was asked why he kept his eyes closed while singing and he replied that he was remembering his mom standing at the door the day he was leaving his home. She stood there and bid him farewell for a fair distance. The monk in the middle shared that his family has no idea he has become a monk. The female judge asked if they would like to send a message to their family through this nationally televised show so they each expressed their love to their moms and longing for home. Hope this helps put things into perspective!

The lyrics of this song in english: "The thread in the hands of a loving mother, a wanderer's clothes, the seams are tight as he departs, in fear that he goes away for a long time...the grass can never repay, warmth the sun provides, the grass can never repay, warmth the sun provides.....the threads in the hands of a loving mother, a wanderer's clothes, the seams are tight as he departs, in fear that he goes away for a long time, the grass can never repay, warmth the sun provides, the grass can never repay, warmth the sun provides"

Further proof that music needs not language to convey the meaning intended. Music speaks to me when nothing else can, reaches me at my most unreachable moments and nourishes my very soul. Indeed, this is further proof that music knows not the boundaries that we take for granted in every day life, taking us out of our bodies and elevating us in spirit.

This sounds like a beautiful hymn. Thank you for sharing this! My father helped me have an appreciation for Asian cultures by sharing his love and stories of the Chinese people from his time spent in mainland China and Taiwan. He served a church mission for 2.5 years in Hong Kong, and served as a pilot in Vietnam and was stationed in Taiwan where I was born. My earliest memories are of the scent of night-blooming jasmine, my amah, and blue mountains -and this music brought these back. I love hearing Mandarin -it's especially soothing for me. I don't know what language they sang in but the words were so poignant. It was so sweet to hear how these men miss their mothers. Bless their beautiful hearts!
@yourwattpadmafiahusband24963 жыл бұрын
Captions are available guys. But anyway, there's a comment translating the song they sang after they were talking. While they were talking, the man on the far left was telling why he was closing his eyes while singing (the female judge asked) and he said it was because it took him back to when he left his home, how he knew his mother had secretly sent him off as he walked away, and how badly he misses his mother. The lad on the far right who cried talked about how his family didn't know he became a monk. He started crying because he obviously misses his family and because they didn't know where he is (he told them he went away for work), how he was never able to thank his mother for raising him, and how he prayed for blessings to be bestowed upon his mother.

I had seen this before and I felt the sadness of the Monk standing at the right.This is the second time watching and I turned on the English subtitles this time. When I heard their stories and their messages to their mothers, I could not contain my tears. I do hope their mothers did see this and were comforted and that these Monks found out that their mothers actually saw this video of them.

To me, the most touching part is " The grass can never repay the warmth of the sun provides " Like how we can never never repay a mother"s love. A mother's simple desire just to stitch a piece of garment for her child, hoping the seams would last in case he will be away for a long journey demonstrates how simple a mothers desire is, always thinking of her child and will always put her child first and there is never single second a mother is at peace as long as her child is not with her I lost my mom exactly 8 years ago and this song will always remind me of her and I hate it when I cannot stop my tears

As a Chinese Hakka-Teochew man, who appreciates music of all cultures and loves to sing himself, I usually slightly struggle to hear the vulnerability in "chinese singing" as we know it's a tonal language which puts constraints on how a song can be structured. That being said, this performance is hands down as emotional as any song in any western, english, japanese or as emotional as any song in any video game that I have heard in my life. Kudos and bravo!

This is very beautiful, especially the lyrics, but no-one seems to notice that the melody is "Bethany" by Lowell Mason (ca 1859) which is customarily used for the Christian hymn "Nearer my God to Thee". Interestingly, the text to that hymn (by Sarah Flower Adams), like this Chinese version is built around the theme of the wanderer. Who is to say, truly, which came first, the English or the Chinese: it may not matter. Either way, the two versions nourish one another, both very beautiful. According to tradition, disputed by some survivors, this is the last tune played by the band on the Titanic as the ship sank.
