IN 1980/81 was a wet season in Texas & the Lake Texoma Damsite had been generating for a long time w/o stopping due to all the rain that year. It produced krazy fishing below the dam & miles -n- miles of fishing line, hooks/sinkers, and other debris but no one could go about the warning cables as set forth by the Army Corp of Engineers. Being there on the night they starting shutting down the gates was unbelievable as we went into the water and started hoisting out all these 6" to 10" lures for the Stripper Fishing this place was known for. I filled up 3 8 foot sections of fence 6-7 feet up the fence just hanging these large expensive lures I'd gathered out. Made a lot of money selling the stuff right off the fence but the Army Corp did show up & try to take the spoils claiming it was theirs. They got a lot of other people's stuff b/c they were caught in the water beyond the cables. They gave their stuff up not to get ticketed but mine, I got within minutes of the gates shutting down & no one actually knew where I got it at? Later I got a ticket but I did a service to people/wildlife getting all that out of the water but beware of authorities looking to stop you >> video them. We had no videos then but I like seeing you get the stuff out/ peace

A friend was fishing a river with a number of other people. He said the area below them was really snaggy so no one would fish there. While fishing a truck pulls up and backs in to the water. A guy jumps out and ties a rope onto the hitch and goes out into the water. Then comes back out. They pull a bed box spring out of the river covered in lures. Pick them all off and leave.

Many were brand new lures, that i could feel the fishermans anger on the lures for losing it. I loved the cottonwood trees that fell into the river and were just below the surface. It was like picking mushrooms at a good patch. I would clean them up and sell them for $1 each.

Very disturbing to see the huge number of large lead weights being lost in the river. Despite the irrefutable knowledge we now have about the dangers of using refined lead tackle, the fishing community at large seems to utterly refuse to abandon one of the most toxic metals available. I am primarily a surf fisherman and several years ago bought a small smelting pot and selection of molds. I now make my own weights and jigheads out of a bismuth/tin alloy that is available from many sellers and very easy to work with. It is 80% of the density of lead so to achieve the same weight you need to make the tackle item 20% larger, or just go 20% lighter. I have never found that to be a problem. As sportsmen we like to talk a lot about how responsible we are and how the non-sporting community is simply ill informed as to the harm that shooting and fishing does to the environment. At the same time 95% of the sportsmen (and women) out there refuse to acknowledge the harm that the continuing use of lead is doing to the wild areas and the wildlife. The absurd number of weights recovered in just this single video really illustrates how massive this problem is. Wake up, fellow fishermen, and make the effort to use tackle that is not toxic to our fishing grounds.
@rodneysmart97742 ай бұрын
I used to use plastic swim baits for rockfish. Now I get scraps of beef tallow from the butcher and slice it into swim baits, also quit using lead a long time ago. I even have a hand rig with braided cotton line. I also dive my home break and salvage lures and clean up line.
@Project23DАй бұрын
I beginning to use zinc from damaged pennies to make weights. They are about 60% of weight density compared to lead. IOTW, a one oz lead cannon ball sinker will be .63.oz, ish, of the same mold size.

@2fathomsdeeperАй бұрын
If you think that's bad, you should see the number of divers still using shot weight belts! Big chunky lead weights aren't much problem. It's the small stuff that poses the biggest problem. In a shot belt, the pieces of lead grind together producing powdered lead that gets all over with every move you make. A solid lead belt won't do that. It's the same as mercury. A big puddle won't produce much vapor, but small little dots of it produce a lot of vapor. In streams, the gold miners pull more lead shot, sinkers, and mercury than gold with their dredges. Though in California, most of the mercury is naturally occurring now as the streams have already cleared out all of the mercury that the miners used. Takes about 100 years for it to clear. One of my claims had a vein of cinnabar running right down the middle of the creek. Pulled up over a ton of elemental mercury out of it when we could still dredge for gold. There's still plenty of elemental mercury still seeping out of that vein.

As an old river rat I’ve been snorkeling since the seventies. When I was a young rodent I knew of a spot on the Ottawa river that was notorious for loosing fishing gear. On the bottom I found a 4’ x 8’ steel rebar grate that was loaded with tackle. Big win when you’re 14 years old, but that always stood out in my mind as something I would have spent more time pursuing. I think it’s really great that you’ve recognized and opportunity to do something with the problem.
