Physical Modeling synths have been around for a while. I gave a Yamaha EX5R and a Korg Kronos, both of which have various physical modeling engines. It has been used successfully also on pianos, with PianoTeq and the Roland V-Piano and Fantom. The Waldorf Quantum also has a plucked string engine, among others. Physical modeling seems to work well for plucked strings, tuned percussion (marimba, vibes), woodwinds and horns. It works less well for strings, leads and pads. Overall, I'd say that it's very useful and may get more powerful in future, but it's not the ultmate synthesis solution, if such a thing even exists. It's great that there are VSTs that let you play with this relatiively inexpensively and easily now.

Physical modelling is awesome, but I've actually found Chromaphone to be rather tame. The physical modelling synth I love using for those really wacky sounds is Kaivo by Madrona Labs.

@@SnetremAip Not really, no ... I often print the result though and then deactivate the synth track (in Bitwig). That way it doesn't use CPU, but I can still go back to the original and tweak things if needed.

I used the demo for Chromophone 3 for its full period last year and I loved it. The only downside I know of that you haven't mentioned here is that this type of synthesis requires quite a bit more processing power than something like Serum. I found that many of the presets would devour my cpu. Though it is true, as you do mention, that those presets are insanely beefed up to show the product off. I also use Prism in Reaktor, and it's not nearly as good but it still has the quality that I like most about this type of synth, which is playability. I can plug my keyboard into these instruments and just enjoy playing them for hours because of their responsiveness. I will say that if you are trying to plug typical synth riffs, sequenced-by-mouse, you probably aren't going to love what you get as much as if you make subtle layers of notes. To me, these instruments are inherently percussive. Many have options for "bowing" or "air" exciters, but these still need some improvement, IMO. Anyway just throwing my two cents at the wall so I can watch it jangle around on the floor afterwards.

Physical modelling synthesis principles have been around since the beginning of digital synthesis, and a number of PM hardware synths from the 90’s functioned comparably (or even better in some cases) to the likes of these plugins. So it’s a bit of a stretch stating/click baiting they will “change everything”. Granted though, with the adage of MPE and current processing power, this area of synthesis is being used in progressive ways, particularly for live playing. Haken Audio’s Eagan Matrix probably being a prime demonstration at the moment.

dude i freakin love Chromaphone, it is the jewel in my collection, such an amazing tool for organic sound design, not only that, i often use it for sampling and drop the samples on some granular synths with amazing results for soundscapes and pads

To my ears, these physical modeling patches trying to emulate real instruments aren't particularly interesting. But imagine what could be done to create acoustically and sonically believable "physical" sounding electronic instruments that feel both organic, alien and mechanical at the same time 🤑

Sorry to go off-topic but what's your Live theme? It's much gentler on the eyes than the default ones, and it doesn't seem to be possible to achieve by tweaking the appearance settings. I've had a look on other videos of yours because I assumed it would be a commonly asked question but can't find anything. The closest I can get in Live 11 is setting the Colour Hue option to about 33º

Thanks for sharing if you are in Ableton all you need is Collision. Personally, I do not think they are the future since they have a sound that somewhat sounds out of place in a track, not quite acoustic and not quite synthesised. I think AI sound generation is the future instead. You can get some cool drums sounds and percussive elements with Physical Modelling too.

‘Out of place in a track’ is an incredibly broad statement and entirely subjective. Personally I love hearing well executed sounds in a track that sound somewhere in between real and synthetic. I think being able to synthesize sounds that are nearly as harmonically rich as acoustic instruments with the control of a synthesizer has incredible potential and they are only going to get more advanced. Of course AI will play a big role in the future, doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation in other areas too.

Imagine if producers stopped using Physical Modeling and then people started wondering why it went away and why did the sales for synths with new PM technology like Tomofon drop down to $0 and so we told them "Because there was a Hector HP guy on the internet who made a really good point when he said it doesn't fit in a track" 🤣

@@SynthHackerTV Good point, but we have had this technology since 1995 not quite the future as I see it. It would be interesting to see how ir progresses and where it takes us... but I find it more exciting to be able to synthesise any sound using some clever AI with amazing results... and it will only get better.... Physical modelling is great but you can recreate all of it pretty much using FM synthesis too, with carriers and modulators..... What would excite me about physical modelling would be a good recreation of snare, hihats and wind type instruments.
