despite all the problems you had these minis look awesome. Watching somebody struggle to achieve is heartbreaking at times for the viewer , it certainly is for me anyway, but you always seem to recover and although you may not be best pleased with your results every time generally you seem quite happy. Your journey of re-discovery is a proper rollercoaster ride, and so far I have loved every minute. All I can offer is words of encouragement, you are doing a great job.

It feels like a rollercoaster of emotions here for me too haha but being able to talk to everyone about it here has made it so much better. Thank you!

Great work, love how these turned out! Regarding the cloaks, instead of washes you might just want to try working your way up from a dark shade of paint to mid tones and highlights (not that yours look bad)
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think I want to start painting cloaks like that more, plus it's good practice with lighting and shading.

When you wash a cape or any cloth you only put it in the recesses. Also by adding in crosshatching or little ticks of paint will help the look
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
ohh dang, yeah I put it all over those capes lol but that makes sense. Thanks for the tips!

I suppose someone has already said this, but drill the base of the wing connection and put a metal wire binding there. It will toughen the wing support and any gap can be mended with plastic gloop. Thanks for the metallic paint review.

I'll have to try that next time, it never occurred to me I could do that. Lesson learned! Thanks

Beautiful models Mel. The gold looks incredible. I have a Sisters army and gold features quite a bit on my army. I'm going to try this gold paint. Also, as an old modeler, maybe think about drilling and pinning those big part with tiny glue areas. Even plastic benefits from the reinforcement a pin gives. I drill and pin a lot and my models do not suffer coming apart. 👍
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I was really impressed with this gold metallic. I've never drilled and pinned a mini before! But yeah this one probably really needed extra reinforcement. Hopefully it won't fall apart on me in the future and any other models I paint with delicate wings and pieces are being pinned.

So, one thing you should look into as far as miniature assembly is called "sprue goo". There's a good video on it on Vince's channel, but I have been able to use it for those tricky to keep on items, or if I am kitbashing different parts and the seams or joins are solid plastic - exactly the type of material that make up the model, making it almost like a spot weld. Nothing comes apart, the materials prime perfectly, and the joins are as solid as if they were cast from one piece of plastic. Overall, the Tamiya thin has been my go-to for assembly and is worth the investment. You can also purchase a bottle of their airbrush thinner and get a large amount of it for a fraction of the cost. I like the little glass bottles, so I kept one for the sprue goo and one for the application of cement. I assembled a box of Horus Heresy AOD guys (terminators, dreadnought, two squads of ten so far) and I would not want to do a large amount of assembly without the cement. Same with the Inq28 squads I've been making recently. The cement and sprue goo combo for plastic (not so much resin, although it has its uses there, too) allowed me to mass-assemble easily and without problems once I figured out where to use what application.

Those look fantastic! I'm going to see if one of our local gaming stores has Darkstar Metal paints. I usually stick with Citadel for most of my minis. Except anything I try to do with gold never looks right. It does not go on smooth at all. Which is why my Bookish Dragon I got from Wildspire minis (they are fantastic quality, if you've never checked them out) is supposed to gold, but instead I painted him red. Honestly, I think it looks better anyway on "Steve the Dungeon Librarian", as I named him. 😄Anyway, great video. Will check out more of your work. 😊

I love that name! haha and hopefully you can find them there, they are a smaller company so I am not sure but they deserve more recognition! I was also never pleased with the metallics I had too but these are really nice. I'm glad you liked the video :)

Great looking Sisters. The gold is rich and warm which is rare to see. Looks like an improved Retributor Armor but smoother. Great job on them

Metallic pigments are just heavier that's why you had to crank the pressure on the airbrush you definitely did thin it enough :)

You are so sceptical with your work lol My own Celestine is on her way to me and Ill be glad if she turns out just half as good as yours! But will definetely paint her wings before assembling (and after I switched them with Yndastra's hehe)

I knowwww its something I still struggle with. Taking a step back and looking at the model definitely helps me gain perspective! Also I had to search for who Yndastra is and yes, you must replace them with those! They are glorious

@@melsminiloftwell, maybe thats the attidude that brought you to your level, but from an outside perspective: youre doing great! Right? cant wait to see how it turns out, but what I learned from your video is Ill definetely use paperclip connections for the wings bash :P

Looking at my prior comment, I didn’t mean to say you’re models aren’t perfect. I think you’re harder on yourself than you need to be. are you using superglue on the wings? You may want to start using a plastic cement afterwards on the outside to melt them together I’m about to paint my Tau army for the third time. Maybe I could pick your brain on some suggestions for paint colors.

These are great! Not only does that gold look awesome, but you've really stepped up your basing game! Sorry about the wings though! 😖Something that makes true metallics look extra awesome is doing them over a super glossy black basecoat. Makes them really shine! Your channel is actually one of the things that's gotten me to seriously consider invest in a good camera and some lights and start my own channel; I don't need to be the most popular youtuber, but I'd love to do some fun videos and share them with the community.
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
Haha thanks! I finally got some of those little grass tufts and I love it so much 😊 Making these videos has been one of the best life decisions I've ever made, go for it! And you don't need anything too expensive, your phone and a good light source is all you really need. Biggest thing to invest in first is actually a good microphone! People much prefer high quality audio. Good luck if you end up starting your own video making journey!

Have you tried extra thin Plastic Cement from Tamiya or believe it or not Gorrila Glue gel version. Or you can pin them using a Pin Vice. There are tutorials here on youtube.
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
I haven't tried the plastic cement before! Honestly I had a super old plastic glue I was using at the time, I think its time for it to be retired anyways. I do plan to check out how to pin as well!

Larger surfaces (like the cloaks) need to be directed rather than letting washes pool in crevices. I'd suggest build up the different tones (shadow/mid/highlights plus any intermediaries you want) with glazes or thin layering. Or dry brush/stipple for a more rough and ready approach. Both of those will let you control the transitions between light and shadows and control the finish (matt vs gloss). Love the finished models though. Look forward to the next minis!

Glazing seems like an essential next step to master in mini painting, I really want to try it soon! Thank you :)
@jimminey-fooking-cricket4903 Жыл бұрын
Look good couple of things. 1 your wings if there as bad as you say then you should try pinning them plenty of videos on KZbin about how to do that. 2 thing you paints White is bad for looking dusty or chalky. Highlights would also make those glorious wings pop.
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
Definitely going to try pinning in the future, it was something I wasn't expecting and by the time it was falling off there was a bunch of paint on it. Next time for sure! And yeah I'm using the Army Painter white and I'm not a big fan. A better white and some highlights will really help. Thank you!

what type of glue were you using to assemble Celestine? if it was CA glue, that'll become brittle and parts come off. my best experience with gluing plastic is with Revell plastic glue or Tamiya plastic cement.
@melsminiloft Жыл бұрын
Honestly I was using a VERY old Testors plastic glue. I think that could have been a big part of it. After assembling her justice bough a new one again Testors and it worked much better on the other two.
