The Shepard laying down and approaching like so, shows he wants to play. The Retriever is showing he sees him, with body language he shows he wants easy play, not rough. Thus the pause. The Retriever then engages the play having been politely asked by an enthusiastic Shepard. I love dogs. It feels like watching your 10 year old self play!

Nah. Most play is some element of pretend hunting. Shepherd is play stalking. Retriever accepts the play role of prey, freezes like prey, then takes of like prey once his excitment pops. Nothing about roughness of play is communicated here.

But he could also be showing the other dogs that he is submissive and friendly by lowering himself, which puts him in a more vulnerable position. Many dogs dislike being approached by another dog suddenly, so it’s safer for your dog as he isn’t likely to be attacked by a dog that doesn’t want to interact or didn’t see him coming.

It is down to their protective nature, hence when the other dog comes closer he recognises and begins play. Most dogs who lie down when another dog approaches it is to show submissiveness

In fact, you don't want your dog to do that as it only attracts more, and usually too much, attention. The result is nervous dogs go submissive, that behavior draws more attention, and they fall into a downward spiral significantly raising the risk of aggression. The healthy way to show submission during a greeting is to simply be still and give hard look aways. Everything about this shepherd is shouting I want to play, not I'm submissive.

I have a border collie and this is literally how he approaches every dog he sees weather he’s known them since he was a puppy or first time passing in the street. It’s a herding instinct to tell the other animal they aren’t a threat but to do as they want them to. It’s not like him trying to be the big dog in charge more that he will decide if it’s too much and when / how to play. Dogs are just incredible!

The reason they do this is to read the other dogs body language and have enough time to decide what they want. The shepherd is laying down to display non threatening behavior, but is still able to jump and run away if the Golden Retriever has other intentions. They stare and freeze because they don't want to make the first move or come on too strongly because that could incite a fight. Basically this entire interaction is the equivalent of "Bro... Is that you? Are you good? Do you want to play? Maybe...? Wait... Okay we GOOD!"

@@Tawkitoutti Listen, this might be a long one but that mentality just pisses me off. They learn from us yes, but that does not mean they are humans or want to act like one. We are the most dominant species on earth because we adapted the ability to think and make decisions, which separates us from every other animal on the planet. Dogs dont have that, they are still biologically and genetically canines, predators and animals with intense instincts. Even a deformed Pug still has the instinct to hunt and establish territory despite its physical deformities we bred onto them. Anyone with any knowledge in animal behavior or science can tell you that. You are imposing your human thoughts and emotions onto a non human animal. You can train a dog to do anything but a dog is still a wild animal that has needs, wants and bases its life and behavior on the stimulous around it and what it has learned to "associate" to such stimulus. For example, If you reward a dog for barking, it's going to keep barking. If you do nothing, it will still bark. If you tell it not to bark as if it were a human child that can understand, the dog wont care and will keep barking. If you hit it every time it barks, it may stop barking because it has associated fear with the stimulus or it may react more negatively because the instinct overpowers/is fueled by the negative punishment. However, if you distract them with a form of reward that is worth more than the stimulus, theyll stop barking and eventually learn. They can't "think" about why they're barking and choose not to bark. Like a human can choose not to say something because they thought about the situation and made a choice. They think and feel, but not in the same way we humans can. We have choices and complex brain mechanisms that lead to advanced behavior, but dogs do not. Their entire lives are based around instinct and what that instinct is telling them to do, as it has done for thousands of years, they have just adapted to coexist with us due to a symbiotic relationship. We gave them food, one of their most important means of survival, and that changed the brain chemistry thousands of years ago, causing them to branch off from other wild canines. A dog is still a dog and will act like a wild animal unless you train it, and with our advanced brains we have been able to research and study animal behavior to know HOW to get them to do what we want by manipulating their wants and needs, that is how we have been able to teach and train them to do what we want and to feel comfortable tethered to a leash, or feel comfortable being touched and petted, but unless you provide them mental and physical stimulus to replace the biological instinct and urges they have, they'll go crazy and get sick just as a wild animal would. You can't reason with a dog the way you could reason with a human child, they dont understand "later" or understand what a joke is and they certainly dont understand "comedy". When we think these behaviors are just them "acting like people" or "acting goofy", it's wrong. Every behavior they exhibit is either the result of taught/trained behavior from another dog or by their owners, or the dog acting on its own instinct towards the basic necessities of survival. The Shepherd and the Golden in the video are clearly displaying behavior that represents threat assessment, and it doesn't matter if they've met eachother a thousand times, they still have to go through this every time they meet again because they are animals that NEED to establish a hierarchy in order to prevent fights and decide who gets the rights to food, shelter and breeding. Even if you cant see that and think they're just "memeing", they aren't. There isn't any harm in joking about it, and yes we can laugh about the way they behave, but to honestly believe dogs think like humans is neglectful and potentially harmful to their mental wellbeing. To think that "Dogs have human behavior beyond any other animal" means you clearly have not researched what you claim, and have forgotten what trainability is. There are other species that have passed the mirror test and have shown to have some level of self awareness like us humans, mainly Great Apes, Elephants, Crows and Corvids, Dolphins, etc. However canines score extremely low on the test, meaning they act in favor of instinct and cannot recognize themselves as an individual in a mirror, and show little to no signs of self awareness, but that doesn't mean they aren't intelligent.

There's no dominance on display from either. They are both playing, that means alternating between prey and hunter roles. You chase me, we wrestle a little, I chase you-- full cycle of play. Dominant displays don't result in play.

@@joelsdogbehavior there is a clear system of rank and seniority in the dog world and it manifests itself in almost every interaction. Humans are not vastly different in that respect.
