Actually that’s how Olympic jumpers used to jump back in the day. Shoes and landing on your back are techniques that give more height. But Olympic jumpers can still jump higher than themselves even without shoes or landing on their back.

I began high jumping in junior high during gym class. I was hooked on this event. I advanced to the AAU and qualified for the 1964 Penn Relays while in high school. I was shocked to see these brothers, especially the last jumper clear the bar with a frontal leap. Just imagine what they could do with formal high jump training using their original style. John Thomas and Valerie Brummel from Russia were my high jump idols. They mastered the Western Roll. I surely hope some university or track & field club would sponsor these brothers. I hope to see them in the Olympics one day.

1:06 - His heels are above the 48” line. Standing jump. I’ve heard people claim some NBA players had a 48” standing vertical but I never saw conclusive proof. This guy, though, you can see his receipts. He’s the real deal. And the camera height is right about at 48” too, so it’s not an optical illusion. Sorry I’m droning on, but dayum, first time I’ve seen a human undeniably go above 48” in a standing high jump.

Michael Jordan's 48" out of college is a lie. I read a book on him and his coach said he was 36" standing vert, 42" with a bit of a runup. His trainer said in 1991-1992 he got to 48" but he didn't say if it was standing or not. I kind of doubt it. MJ was unreal with his leaping but 48" is hard to believe. I'd say between 42" and 45" for MJ with a run up, and maybe he eventually got to 40" standing vert.

@@huntingwolf20 - That sounds more believable. Add a little game-time Adrenalin and he might get another inch or two.

@@huntingwolf20 having been near him in person, I would say his height is closer to 6'4, similar to what people have stated about Kobe. I believe he could hit his head on the rim if he wanted to with a run. That would make his running vert 44". He'd have to get his eyes over the rim without bending his neck to get to 48".

@@jichaelmorgan3796 I am pretty sure he never had that 48 inch vert. I will give him like 46 inches (with a run up ) from what I have seen. Same for wilt. This guy on the other hand has hit 47.1", 46.5", 47" from a standing position on 3 different attempts. His max vert would probably be 50" + .
