Manic cackler of the African night - the animal whose calls send trickles of unease down the spine. Ally of witch and sorcerer - according to old superstitious belief. The animal with just about the mightiest bite on the planet. Regularly seen scavenging abandoned kills, or slipping through the trees in the dead of night, going about its stealthy carnivorous business. The spotted hyena is the one African animal that seems to be nobody’s favourite.
Yet it’s worth a kinder look. The females in particular. There are some very special, very un-female things about them. Reputedly vicious, aggressive and dangerous, this powerful predator is a gentle parent and united family member.
Discover the hyena of fact and fable in this episode of The Whole Story.

For those who are lacking in comprehensive listening skills, it wasn't stated that hyenas are necessarily related to cats. It was said that they are MORE CLOSELY related to cats versus dogs. The point being: they appear canid, but are closer to cats in lineage than canines, which is true. They did split off from source branch that felidae also came from way back when. They ARE most closely related to the hespestidae family, which includes the mongoose and meerkat. They are in the hespestoidea family. Their branch is on a parallel branch to true felines (felidae) which splits down the line from the same source. Go look up their lineage. They are much more closely related to felines than canines. Comparing something as being more like one thing versus another isn't necessarily saying the thing IS the other thing.

This is a REALLY well done documentary about Hyenas. It is not only easy to watch due to the insight of the creator to have such an abundance Equal Balance, showing a few of the social animal families in rest-cuddle-play vs death FOR food or death due to LACK of food. There is no gore for gores' sake. The narrator is calm and pleasant. Plus, there was no blatant manipulative background noise or music to alter the NATURAL experience many viewers wish for but cannot easily find on YT. SO MANY videos of African animal sightings, especially a prolonged sighting where all on location are massively enjoying the story unfolding before their eyes in real time there... but these same people CANNOT BE QUIET to let the people at their side, behind them, in front of them, in a different car 3-4 meters away ALL get the chatty Cathy or the Blabbermouth Bob on ALL the videos made of that special event. THEN add to that... each go home and edit their video and add their OWN commentary which may or may not be correct depending on the source and age of their data collected. SO.. that all said, THIS documentary gives you insight to the goings on, but it is NOT bombarded with narration in the background, nor from start to finish. Kudo's, and Danke ö for making those choices. SPECIAL THANKS to ALL the people around the world who are SO fortunate to witness AND either capture it on video, or support a friend or family member with you who IS getting the video of it... all the while the people there who ALL WHISPERED very very softly so as to not alter the situation with their excitement which could, has, and will again, change the outcome (like an animal suddenly bolting after a human jumps in excitement, or squeals and the rare sighting ends with it being hit by a motorist...etc) of the experience for ALL involved. So to those of you who have always known, or have learned to calm it to a hush tone or be silent, waiting to discuss the mesmerizing, thrilling, exciting, unbelievable event once you are out of 15 people's videos of also THEIR very special siting too. :)!! THANK YOU. PLEASE SPREAD the GRATITUDE ...in a BIG WAY to those who quiet their mouth so that ALL can enjoy in their OWN PERSONAL WAY and REVIEW IT on their video in the most AUTHENTIC way it was truly meant to be experienced...without the narrative of how someone else is experiencing it which clouds EVERYONE THERE's own individual way to process it. An aside: OF COURSE I AM NOT talking about EMERGENCIES a or DIRE situations- THOSE you address based on your knowledge of Self Defence, Emergency 1st Aid, your own personal Flight or Fight or Freeze mechanism in times of evolving emergencies. So if you can't do ANYTHING.., POINT at another person standing there frozen with their mouth ajar and shout at them to GO CALL 911 NOW. NOW they NEED YOU!". Then you stay out of the way, or get to work with SAFE rescue plans even if your job is to point the way for Fire/Police etc. Back to what I'm talking about -special natural events that a small percentage of people around the world get to witness with their own eyes as it's happening right beside/in front of them. The majority of people will never travel out of the region/county/or small state they lived in all their lives. Therefore given the chance to SEE it as if "we/they are there", it would take a special videographer to establish his/her wish for as little chatter whenever recordings are happening. In that way, people watching can will be undistributed by chatter, adding to their ability to suspend their reality .... like letting the walls of the nursing home they live in disappear as they go "on safari" or see special sights as if they stood right there when it happened and all were quietly stunned, or polite to let every other person process it how they wish. Anyone able to do this understands these things, already are well in tune with treating all creatures on this planet with respect for their needs whenever it is wise, safe, and possible. It's all about EMPATHY.

It’s really rather embarrassing what humans can let a Disney movie do to their views of a wild animal, no animal should be hated but Lions do far worse, killing anything and everything, even without food being involved and are almost solely responsible for the cheetahs almost going extinct but everyone still loves Lions. That’s how you know not to take it seriously, people are just dumb and have stupid bias against Hyenas thanks to the Lion King. They try to justify their hate with how Hyenas kill their prey but there’s thousands of videos of Lions, wolves, bears and dogs eating animal alive but for some reason, only Hyenas get hated for it, humans are cringe.

That intro song is awesome ! Reminds me of my childhood when during holiday visit's at our granny's evening we would gather at granny homestead sing folk songs, played silly fun game's under the moonlight & after we were done, we would gather in a circle around a fire roasting corn, sweet potato's, arrowroot's & grandma would serve us tea & tell us great folk stories. Our faces would beam with happiness adoration & pride. We would then trot home sleppy & content. If I'd turn back the hands of time.

But african wild dogs are endangered, so they changed it to spotted hyenas which are... well... everything but endangered, they are very dominant and have extremely large numbers. Everyone has their own opinion. I used to dislike hyenas until I started watching their documentaries and through watching Kevin Richardson's KZbin channel my opinion of them has changed dramatically. When you watch them and learn about the hierarchy system they have amongst themselves you see that they're not just savages that steal everyone's kill. They're highly intelligent and complex animals. That doesn't mean I'm dumb enough to go pet a wild hyena. I can appreciate the beauty in them and all animals. So thanks for your input.

A lion doesn't have the sense of a hyena not by a long shot, she could have taken a piece away with her just as the others did.

04:25 a little confused ! "Ardwolf a strange carnivore that eats nothing but termites ." Would I call it an insectivore ?
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei
@Kuhmuhnistische_Partei 2 жыл бұрын
Well, "Carnivora" is the name of the biological order (the category between class and family), it's not a description of the diet. In the order carnivora there are two suborders: Feliformia (cat-like) and Caniformia (dog-like). Hyenas are part of the cat-like suborder. Insectivora was once the order for hedgehogs and moles, but is now outdated and was replaced with the order Eulipotyphla ("truly fat and blind")
