Great tip on the interfacing of flannel! I have a set of turning twenty flannel Quilt blocks that have just been giving me fits. I had thought about using interfacing, but was concerned that it might be too heavy for this quilt. Your comments have helped me tremendously. I will go hunt for a very light interfacing to control it. Then I’m gonna finish squaring my blocks and finally put them together! Thank you.

I am working on ‘going away’ quilts for each of my grandsons. When I pass I do not want a funeral, wake, viewing, etc., there aren’t that many people I know that are close enough to drive here anyway. I don’t want people looking at my dead body! I want their memories of me to be when I was alive. Their quilts will have pieces of my flannel nighties, their favorite colors, and on the back a note in my handwriting “I will love you forever, Granny”. I have watched these two boys grow up from infants to college graduates so my ‘disappearance’ will affect them emotionally. With these quilts, made with my love, they will always have a reminder of my love for them.

Your process for putting this quilt together as a collage is exactly the process I used for my granddaughter’s T-shirt, Quilts. They both turned out really beautiful. However, I think it might have gone better if I had a design wall like yours. Laying them out on the bed just didn’t work as nicely.

I have collected several Plaid shirts from the thrift store. Thank goodness they are cotton fabric and not flannel! One day I will make them into a quilt. Last summer I did make a queen-size flannel quilt for someone that had 1,670 two inch squares. I dealt with the "wiggly" flannel by heavily starching the fabric.

Domestic machine quilting has it's place, However this quilt would have MOST definitely benefited from a longarm quilter. Please don't be afraid of using a longarm quilters expertise. You can look for a local quilter, and benefit yourself and the quilter. The quilt will come out straight on all sides and look very good. Bind it yourself for some savings. Use of shirt material is great and the word fabric gave the project a real boost. This made a great man's gift!
