The Book of Strange New Things sounds right up my alley. I enjoy books that incorporate a religious element. I think an "If you like this, read that" video would be fun comparing similar themes in Soft-SciFi vs. Hard-SciFi versions.

One of my favorite Soft Science Fiction books is The Last Policeman series by Ben H. Winters, where the only SF element is that the world knows there's a civilization-ending asteroid coming within 6 months (at the start of the series),but otherwise it just focuses on a detective solving ordinary mysteries complicated by society starting to fall apart. Also, although it might have a little bit of science explaining how the implant works and such, it's pretty easily skippable: "We Are Satellites" by Sarah Pinsker follows a family after a new brain implant allows much easier multitasking of concentration-style issues and just looks at how society copes and pressures people to get the implants just to stay competitive.

yay - soft sci-fi is my favorite genre! I loved the Michel Faber book you mention - unfortunately there is animal cruelty. And Kindred is a masterpiece!

When I wrote my trilogy, I wanted to have ordinary people try to use their everyday knowledge to make sense of where they found themselves. So, yeah, sometimes they do the math wrong, and sometimes, there is just no answer. I don't enjoy reading overly technical writing, so for me, it doesn't matter how the faster-than-light drive works, I'm satisfied by, "You just press the green button."😆

I haven’t read Handmaid’s Tale. Felt too close to real life. I’ll check out Foe. I have the Crusted Snow book, just need to read it. I’m reading nonfiction right now. Was getting bored with fiction as it all seemed the same in the sense there were the predictable tropes used and you knew where the book would go before the first chapter is done.

Definitely soft sci-fi is my preferred, my brain doesn't like the alternative 😂 Not sure this would qualify as soft sci-fi, but I read Eleanor by Jason Gurley years ago and absolutely adored it!! ❤

Did you ever read Marcel Theroux novel Far North? It's a post apocalyptic literary novel, Sf but not obsessively so

I think Providence by Max Barry might belong here. The author never explains any of the scifi tech used. It's just stated as being used. Also doesn't really explain his aliens except one part. Mostly character driven but with a good story. Very little world building though. It's just very focused on what the characters are engaged in which makes sense given they are on a spaceship with little actual control of what is happening.
