I am a big fan of Lizzie. She works with you building and maintaining the flock, and a mother of two boys, a decision maker when needed, shearer at home and in competition. This is just a few observations of how important she is, Cammy. In your busy life, don’t forget to praise her, let her know you value her, and want her to be happy.

Good day, sheep fans! We are at the annual shepherd fashion show. Hot from Paris (UK) is Cammy and his gothic/flannel fusion shorts. Note the craftsmanship and the artistic choice in footwear. We haven't seen the likes of this since ... well ... come to think of it, we haven't ever seen such avant-garde attire before. Amazing. Simply amazing.

The second group of sheep I ever bought had just been footvaxed. The flock was run on watermeadows and was having a few problems with the wet weather. I still had enough problems with them for Easycare sheep on dryer ground and they nearly all had absceses from the vacination site. I haven't used it myself, that was enough to put me off. I hope it works out better for you.

Mixed thoughts on Footvax but we used to do all the tups twice a year once they are on the programme and Suffolk ewes annually (as they have a reputation for greater susceptibility to footrot bacteria). We did not do all the commercial flock for expense reasons. We did cull any adult sheep once they had had it three times ASAP - this had, in our opinion, the greatest beneficial and financial effect as it reduced the amount of infection on pasture and less overall infection amongst other sheep in the flock. Your Sheep flock records should be a big help here to identify repeat offenders. Remember that this vaccine does not help at all for prevention or treatment of scald. Speaking about which your sheep footbathing facilities, at home at least, need radical improvement - see the "5 point plan" to best foot bathing sheep practice. Dan
@TheSheepGame Жыл бұрын
Cheers Dan. Our biggest issue is foot rot particularly in winter when it’s difficult to footbath sheep at wintering. Totally agree we’re just covering up the problem not fixing it. Lizzy’s system won’t be on footvax just using a hard cull policy to breed better quality stock.

Great video, in particular I liked when the sheep came out of the side lane into where the person on the bicycle had been riding. I had a thought about the timing, and if the sheep had been a tiny bit earlier or the bicyclist later what would have transpired. Do bike riders stop? Do the sheep ever knock someone down? I'm thinking it could be tricky for the dogs if the sheep started to turn the other way, since the dogs are not only behind them but not where they can go around and steer them loke they do going through gates in a big open field. Love that you have the shade cover! As well as give the sheep time to rest and catch their breath. Nice you got a chance to shear off that fly strike!

Thanks. I was actually standing on top of the buggy behind the camera controlling the dogs over the hedge so I got them to stop the sheep from coming out until the cyclist passed 😁

Stopped using footvax a few years ago. It only works on footrot, and my problem is CODD and strip or scald, so no point spending the money on it. It was later in the day and the fence was casting a shadow on the one side of the dip. You can see that most of them carefully stayed on the 'light' side of the water, and avoided the dark side. It may have been why the first ones were a bit reluctant to jump in.

That tent!!! It's THE thing, as a bystander, I was wishing you had! I'm so happy you got it now, it will definitely help. So maybe, just maybe, you'd think of some such arrangement for shearing in the field. There must be some mobile tents for simple fast installation and rear of putting them back away. Fairs and such open air events often have them, they are probably not very expensive.

Hello! I have used Footvax for the last 15 yrs. Find it very good. You must keep using it or footrot will creep back. We had terrible trouble looking after lame sheep on our flock of Suffolk and Border Lèicester . Almost no lame sheep now. All the best from Paddy in Ireland.
@paulogorman58028 ай бұрын
Hi Paddy, did you inject your ewes twice starting off ? I heard some people say that one dose is enough if you don’t have huge problems. Were the lumps very bad on the ewes?
@paddyosborne998 ай бұрын
Vaccinate when sheep are dry and change needles often, you shave few abscesses and only normal vaccine reaction. For vaccine to work properly you need to vaccinate ewes twice at start and vaccinate replacements twice. Then you will have no footrot.
