Mt Youtei, which is referred to as the "female mountain" by the indigenous Ainu people, was seen as a sacred place in which feminity would flourish. Keeping that in mind, SuckerPunch might have put a lot more thought behind the decision of a woman protagonist than one would assume.

Whether or not it applies to this game remains to be seen, but look around at Sony's other IP's lately. With a small handful of exceptions, they've all fallen victim to DEI mandates in one form or another, and the PlayStation brand has been incredibly disrespectful to Japan ever since the Californianisation of the company. You'd have to be ignorant not to acknowledge that simple fact. The concern that SuckerPunch's next game could fall victim to those same trappings isn't unfounded in today's day and age. Still, SuckerPunch so far has a better track record than most of respecting the settings they portray. They were dubbed official ambassadors for the island of Tsushima due to that fact, and even garnered praise from Japanese developers like Toshihiro Nagoshi (Super Monkey Ball, F-Zero GX and Like a Dragon). Provided Sony doesn't meddle with the game's development, or no undesirables rise to power within SuckerPunch (since development studios change staff all the time), we should hopefully get something decent out of it.

My theory is that Atsu is on a path of revenge but along the way she discovers that she is a descendent of Jin Sakai, the legendary Ghost figure who by now is probably just a myth. So she uses the styles and teachings of her ancestor to help her complete her quest. I hope we get to explore the entire prefecture of Hokkaidō. That would make the map 100x bigger than Tsushima. Probably not, but hey, a man can dream 💭 Thank you for making this video.

My guess is similar to yours, but also different. Instead of being a descendent of Jin Sakai, she comes from a secret Shinobi clan inspired by The Ghost's tactics. Atsu might be from a family from that very Shinobi clan. I reckon that her family got discarded by one of the Shogun factions as they want to rule by gaining positive public sentiments, instead of heinous methods to take down their opposing factions. The only surviving member of her family, she hunts down the ronins hired to dispose of her family. A bit similar to Lady Masako's story, except that it's the Feudal lord that owned and managed her clan that wiped her family. It is possible that her journey of vengeance will be stopped eventually, and basically you play as the villain.

@@Perceval777 that's far from the truth. Ainus have been struggling to maintain and profit from fishing rights that they historically possessed. They are often bared from selling the salmon they fish in rivers because its from protected fish stock. While its understandable for ecological purpose, Japan is famously hypocritical in using nonsens "traditional" claims to the whaling industry to justify its continued hunt of various whales. So banning Ainus for selling some fish is hypocritical. Another thing is that many conservative politicians still claim that "ainu decend from the okhotsk culture from Siberia, so they arent really Japanese" (they are between a third and half siberian, but mostly Emishi genetically iirc), to justify treating them as newcomers, with less respect. Its not that easy.

I'm very excited for Ghost of Yotei. As for the question how Atsu could have gotten her training or became a Samurai, maybe she was a member of the household of LadyTachibana Ginchiyo? She recruited females into her elite guard, and trained all the females in her house in warfare skills, and she and her guard partook in battles and were allied with Hideyoshi. If I am not mistaken, the Tachibana clan was deprived of their posessions after Sekigahara, so it would stand to reason, that a potential member of Ginchiyo's elite guard could become a Ronin.

When I learned this game was going to be set in the Sengoku/Edo Period, I was rather bummed because almost every work of media with a historical Japanese setting is set in one of those two periods. But, having the location in Hokkaido is at least interesting enough to make me want to keep my eye on this game to see where it goes. And while I too am nervous about how they're going to handle a female lead, the trailer didn't seem to be trying to constantly point to her being a "strong female lead," it felt more subdued so I'm going to maintain a cautious optimism. We'll see though.

I have a feeling that it won't just be Hokkaido, but also Northern Honshu considering the title is Ghost of Yotei and not just Ghost of Ezo.
@pangurban1273Ай бұрын
Some interesting random facts I’ve come across trying to deep dive Hokkaido history that might be useful; •The Shamisen/Samisen found its way to Japan through port Sakai (😏😏😏) near Osaka (also the location of the final battle to cement the Tokugawa Shogunate’s position, though granted, that WAS several years after the current year of Ghost of Yotei) •The Ainu did NOT have a written language, their history was kept through spoken word. So Atsu carrying a sash/banner with Japanese calligraphy written on it (what does iT SAYYYYYYY 😫😫😫) could attest that she’s a “southerner” and not actually FROM Yotei •Wolves in Japan are now extinct, though that event wasn’t for another few hundred years. STILL- there could nonetheless be important similarities between the history of the wolves and the main character to kind of portray metaphorical/spiritual similiarities. In Ezo, the Ainu people viewed EVERY aspect of nature/animals as a type of god/deity (actual word- “kamuy”) of the land. Wolves were as cherished as domestic dogs, and hunters would often view wild wolves as “hunting” partners and would share kills with them. Far later, when wolves were labeled as pests, they were systematically wiped out through poisoning campaigns (👀) and bounties were awarded for each wolf killed by a hunter. [Personal theory that how Sakai’s “animal guide” was foxes- I think Atsu’s “animal guide” will instead be wolves. And kind of like how Deer were venerated on Tsushima and that it’s “bad luck” to kill them- it’s “bad luck” to kill a wolf in early Edo period because they prey on pest animals that damage crops) •The current “ronin” inhabiting Ezo COULD very well be the old “samurai” who had been chased out of their positions and homes by the new Shogunate. So my theory is that perhaps the old Shogunate’s forces might be trying to conquer Hokkaido and establish territory BEFORE the new Shogunate sends his forces to occupy it. •Yellow is a “bright, optimistic, youthful” color in Japanese symbolism- which is an interesting take given what we know about the Ghost. Also the usage of it in the trailer is suspiciously insistent- between Atsu’s clothing, the yellow leaves on the trees, the yellow gingko leaf in the logo, and the wolves’ yellow eyes and teeth. •Kurosawa (the director behind the black and white mode) had a film called “The Seven Samurai”. Look it up- it’s the inspiration behind ANY “get the team together to go f*ck sh!t up” trope that’s in too many games/movies for me to name (and coincidentally ALSO Ghost of Tsushima). NOW- in THIS particular film- a village requests the aid of a samurai to help defend them against bandits who keep returning to steal their harvest. The Village’s Chief has a daughter (Shino)- one who the Chief decided to raise/disguise as a boy for her own protection. She falls in love with one of the samurai. [SO- MY theory- the game’s cover art- Atsu kneeling on a cliff with six swords stabbed into the ground around her, paired with what Sucker Punch said about Atsu being a more “vengeful, underdog” type of character- makes me wonder if she’s going to be a kind of spin off “what if” of Shino if her lover had been kidnapped/defeated by the bandits (Ronin??) and she’s decided to go on a personal mission to find and rescue/avenge him/her village. I think that like how Jin Sakai was a noblemen/samurai who ended up “lowering” his status to that of the Ghost- I think Atsu will essentially be a commoner/thief “nobody” who instead RISES her status to that of the “Ghost” by helping defend the Ainu/commonfolk around Mount Yotei who are most likely getting their asses handed to them by the Ronin/Samurai terf wars happening on top of them.]

So many stories of guys being anti-hero’s and even guys similar to Musashi 😂 I am not angry at the female lead. However, I am expecting a lot since sucker punch did a good job with the first game.

Same I'm very interested in the Ainu peoples of Japan and am disappointed there seems to not be much focus on them in this game. Hell. The RPG I'm concepting is set in the exact same time period as Ghost of Yotei in Hokkaido. Just farther south in Matsumae controlled territory. The vast majority of NPCs all over the map are Ainu, the rest are Yamato and they're concentrated in and around Matsumae.

Nonsense, there was still plenty of story potential for a second game with Jin. SP moving on from him so quick rubs me the wrong way. Could've saved that for a third game. The latter typically results in eventual creative bankruptcy.

I was also quite shocked to see not a single aspect of Ainu culture anywhere in this trailer, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I like that they’re going for a kind of Wild West but with samurai vibe. I think SP mentioned that we will have greater freedom to determine what kind of person Atsu is. Man the atmosphere the trailer had was crazy, the American west in the 1800s was kinda like how Hokkaido was, rural and inhabited by mostly indigenous native tribes, that type of western style outlaw vibe is apparent by sucker punch since they are so heavily inspired by read dead redemption. Historically accurate or not , I love the Edo period for this type of game, the north was a wild frontier for most citizens at the time, so seeing a lot of nature would be a good thing for this story, but thats just my opinion

I suspect it will be another invasion" type of plot, this time depicting Japanese from the south encroaching on Ainu villages and lands. Probably a special emphasis placed on the newly formed Tokugawa Bakufu as the antagonist because of their organizational/institutional ability to "colonize" the land. I hope I'm wrong... I hope it's less grand and more of a personal plot.

I agree with pretty much all the points, especially hope to see some Ainu representation since I am pretty familiar with Ainu culture. As an aside I find it pretty funny some of the people who are complaining about the protagonist being female are also claiming the overwhelmingly positive like to dislike ratio on the trailer is fake because nobody interested in a samurai game could want to play a woman. There’s so many Japanese setting games with a female protagonist, it’s funny how disconnected some people are with the genre.
@LuisMendoza-dc4hyАй бұрын
After watching the trailer for the first time, and utilizing my extremely limited knowledge regarding Japanese history, at first, I thought the protagonist was a Ochimushagari, but, of course, I assume there is an interesting, more profound reason why she is hunting ronin. Unlike some people, I don't automatically call a game woke just because they have a female lead(especially since the first game had a male lead) as long as the character and story are well written. I feel like this story has a theme of betrayal in it. I think the main character was fleeing from the conflicts in Japan with family and they were killed. She later found a person who had one of the katanas that had the wolf on the hilt and they helped raise her, train her and introduce her to the group of people they were with, hence the kill list she has only had their nicknames on it. Something happened and the person who saved her was killed and she almost died but somehow managed to learn that her mentor was killed by one of his allies in whatever group they formed. Overall that’s what I think this character’s journey will be about betrayal and revenge but learning that she can be a good person and save the people too.

I think where going down a path that is similar to that of Mizu from the Netflix serie 'the blue eye samurai.' (amazing show by the way) If I had to guess the story, I would say that she is probably the last survivor of her family that was butchered by a group of ronin who then fled to Yōtei to escape the law. But she is saved by a mentor, who teaches her how to fight and is familiar with the story of the ghost of tusima. So she goes after them, not as a person, not as samoerai, but as an Onryō. 👹

My theory is the story will be about the Japanese trying to colonize Hokkaido [which it did slowly from 1600's well into the 1800's]. The people of Hokkaido are the Ainu people [who genetically are shown to be the original indigenous Jomon people of Japan]. The first game was about Mongol imperialism in Japan, this one will be about Japan itself trying to colonize the Ainu. Atsu the main character will either be an Ainu trying to stop this colonization or be a Japanese herself defending the Ainu clans from Japanese expansion.

I really hope she's Ainu, so we can play as an Ainu character instead of playing as yet another Japanese character like we can in soooooo many games. It also makes sense that she, as an Ainu, would be more of a warrior than a Japanese woman would've been likely to be. The steppe peoples (broadly) had a more accepting culture of women training how to fight at the very least to protect their homes while the men were off on raiding parties. Plus, the elite Ainu warrior classes as being mounted archers was the inspiration to the Japanese for what eventually became their Samurai class, which originated more as mounted archers before eventually becoming more versatile of a class during the Ashikaga and Sengoku periods. So whereas Jin was a Samurai, Atsu would be like one of the Ainu warrior class that inspired the Samurai around a millennia prior. Also Ainu people, along with the Ryukuan people, are Japan's two historical ethnic minorities, so getting rep from them would be great! I would love the third game to be set during the newly established Japanese Empire of the 1870's properly invading/ annexing the Ryuku Islands and you play as a Ryukuan character trying to fight off their invasion and the game is called 'Ghost of Okinawa'.

I kind of wish this game took place during the Ainu rebellion during the mid 1600s. Granted, it was only for about 3 years. Yet, I feel it would give some purpose to the main character in becoming the Ghost. Them possibly being of the Ainu people and fighting against the main land Japanese. After all, you can still have Japanese and Samurai stuff but also have a lot more culture stuff as collectables to read and learn about the Ainu culture and people. Don't really know where Sucker Punch is going with this one, but they haven't let us down so far. Perhaps in Ghost of Yotei, the main character is attempting to find a ronin that killed a loved one or something and is killing the many ronin criminals along the way. That kind of storyline feels like a bad one though, since there's nothing significate is actually going on except it being a revenge story and taking place in Hokkaido. Guess we'll just wait for more news about the story to come out and judge it from there.
