I found this clan video very interesting. Basically by accident visited Sanada Treasures Museum in Nagano after visiting the ruins of Matsushiro Castle. It was here I really learned about the Sanada Clan. My poor Japanese did not allow me to fully comprehend all I saw as there limited English descriptions, it was enough. This is very interesting Museum. I wish I had known this information when I visited.

If only modern era would be as cunning as the Sanadas... They're one of the most successful clans in Sengoku Jidai. Looking back, Masayuki didn't know that his gamble not just able to keep the clan alive but Nobushige's feats made his family famous that still goes on for generations. The perfect definition of "fortune favors the bold" during Japan's Sengoku Jidai.

Don’t forget, Sanada Yukimura was regarded by many of his contemporaries that outlived him (although after his death and well into the Edo Period) that he was the “Last Great Hero of the Sengoku Jidai”

Just a minor addition. If you wondered where the Sanada-Date links really start,after Yukimura/Nobushige's death his surviving families were taken care of by the Katakura,one of the key vassal of the Date. (I assume the Date or in this case,Masamune decided to do so is perhaps out of respect for Nobushige's valiant display or bravery at the sieges of Osaka which Masamune himself took part in,as Tokugawa's ally). One of Nobushige's son also got adopted into the Katakura. so considering from that, A Date adopting Sanada name far down the line seems more plausible.

Well, Sanada Daihachi was adopted into Katakura clan, and had to change his name in order to hide from Tokugawa. But yes, that's quite the link between Sanada and Date.

You can always still go. Hopefully the panicdemic will settle down soon and travel will become easier again. I visited Japan a few years back, while my friend was living in Osaka. I went for a couple weeks and while I traveled around as much as I could (JR Pass), I was based in Osaka most of the time. Very cool place. Not as big as Tokyo, so there's less commotion and it's easier to get around. It has a different vibe. Namba is the spot to go hang out. Every meets up at Dotonbori Bridge at night and goes to the izakaya. The last day I was there, before I went back to Tokyo, I decided to hit up Osaka Castle. It's pretty wild because it's right in the middle of the city and everywhere you look the castle grounds are surrounded by skyscrapers. At the time, Universal Studios Japan was doing a Yukimura theatre production - which I didn't know anything about, I just happened to catch the final show that day. There was a stage set up on Sanada-maru where they did a sort of re-enactment of the battle, though it was more like a play overall. It started in the evening, as the sun was going down, and once it got dark they had video projection on the castle to make it look like it was on fire. Amazing! They had a whole village set up, with food and souvenir shops - it was sick. 😆 No regrets... you just gotta go. How long were you living in Japan?

Sanada Yukimura. Learned about him in a manga in 2003. 2008, I blasted half my back with a portrait of him in his red armor. Love this channel. And nice to get a refresher of this Sanada specific history. Was a throwback to just see their family crest on the title screen. They were so emblematic of the era that Koei put Yukimura front and center on the box for the first Samurai Warriors game. It was nice being able to subvert history through the branching story paths in that game, can’t speak for the later games cause I never played them. (2 didn’t have a Japanese dub so it was unplayable hahaha)

How about this theory on how genius Sanada Masayuki was: We all know that Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen were fierce rivals, however they also respected each other, a lot... They exchanged gifts many times and Kenshin cried on the grave of Shingen after his death in 1973. Masayuki was always loyal to Takeda. Diplomacy has some rules - when you seek an ally or support, you are in unfavorable position. However, if someone else is looking for your help, you are in the favorable position. Masayuki went to seek help from Uesugi Kagekatsu, because Takeda were no more and there was no other clan Takeda respected more than Uesugi, even if rivals. By that time Uesugi had a lot of internal problems in their provinces. Yukimura was the price for the support - a hostage tasked to help Kagekatsu with internal problems, while meanwhile Masayuki was supposed to come up with a plan, so that Uesugi will not be attacked by either of the advancing clans - Tokugawa and Hojo. Masayuki managed to convince Hojo, that he infiltrated Uesugi and his spy is his own son- Yukimura. Thus Hojo asked for Masayuki's assistance and he gladly accepted. Masayuki made it look like his alliance increased the strength and positions of the Hojo clan immensely. Uesugi pretended to be fighting, but were bluffing and never had in mind to engage in a battle. Tokugawa saw himself pressured and sent letters to Masayuki asking him to deflect to his side. When Hojo were reassured that they were winning , Masayuki switched sides to Tokugawa. Hojo were shocked and decided to make a peace treaty with Tokugawa. Uesugi were never invaded, and Yukimura was returned to Masayuki. Oh btw Masayuki managed to convince Tokugawa to build Ueda castle, with the money of Tokugawa :D :D as a result of the diplomatical genius mind of Masayuki

Gotta say, Sanada Nobushiges/Yukimuras armor really look beautiful much more beautiful than Honda Tadatakatsu deer antler armor. In Nobunaga Ambition 14 the Sanadas was semi Independent but they are basically close to the Takeda Clan alliance as you can "borrow" their army or that they will 100% support any battles that Takeda. Don't know if this quote was real but Hideyoshi called Yukimura as "Japan number 1 soldier" after Yukimura proven his martial skill in Imjin War

Well, any samurai part of the various Akazonae of the Sengoku-jidai had beautiful red clad armor, in my opinion at least having seen Ii Naotakas armor. The darker colors can appear bland to me while the reds are vibrant and beautiful., synonymous with great warriors and thier units. And it was Shimazu Tadatsune who called Nobushige the "number one warrior in Japan" and this was due to his efforts in Osaka no Eki and by this time, Hideyoshi had been dead for sometime. He did receive many praises though from the likes of the Kuroda who commissioned a painting and the Hosokawa Tadaoki who mentioned his acts of courage in battle.

For me my favorite armor is probably Shingens armor with his white fur kabuto made of bleached Yak hair that said he imported all the way from Ming China

@@hanchiman Dude, you know your armors.👌🏽 Shingens armor is definitely number 1 for me, the gold chain mail as well as the red armor silk, o-sode which are my favorite kind and yes, the white Yak hair he imported. That armor is a display for power economically since Kai didn't have direct access to the sea unlike Sagami and Suruga although it didn't look functional in battle but rather decorative. Well, the Shimazu didn't even take part in the Siege of Osaka and that's where most, if not, all of Nobushiges achievements can be truly seen besides the 2nd Siege of Ueda but his legend all due to Kodan storytelling during the Edo period is based on his actions at the Siege of Osaka, both winter and summer campaigns. However, the Ii red devils are my favorite Akazonae of the Sengoku.

@@thedragonofechigo7878 Haha the ironic thing where I learned about the individual armors is due to the videogame Nioh, if you check on the description of every single weapon and armor it is pretty detail, they have from real historical artifacts to mythological ones. This is where I learned about Shingens kabuto was made of Yak hair Also interestingly in the Nioh DLC with Yukimura armor and spear, they mention Yukimura also owned a famous Masamune sword that he liked using beside his spear, although it didn't appear in the game. Anyways in the youtube channel "Let's talk with Shogo" in the episode where he went to try out samurai armors for photos, Shogo was testing out Shingens armor and his armorer (a pretty cute petite girl) mentioned Shingens armor is actually a decorative armor that is not really comfortable to use in the thick of a battle. Maybe this is why in Shingen older age (when he was in his late 40) he was mostly in his tent issuing orders compared to his rival Kenshin who wore a practical but generic looking armor (his historical armor, I must say look pretty bland, although it does look nice in Silver and look protective as it has alot of metal) as Kenshin is known to personally swing his sword at his enemies. Still Shingen armor did protect him in 4th Kawanakajima not to mention he managed to protect himself with using a warfan, mean Shingen is not someone you should mess with personally.

@@hanchiman where I learnt about these armors is from an armory in Japan called Marutake Sangyo. They make historical reproductions for warlords and warriors such as Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Tokugawa Ieyasu, Uesugi Kagekatsu, Shimazu Takahisa, Shimazu Yoshihiro, Mori Motonari, Mori Terumoto, Otomo Sorin, Tokugawa Hidetada, Ishida Mitsunari, Tachibana Muneshige, Sanada Nobushige, Kuroda Nagamasa, Fukushima Masanori, Date Masamune, Honda Tadakatsu, Toyotomi Hideyoshi Naoe Kanetsugu, Sanada Masayuki and 3 of Nobunagas armors and a lot more too but these reproductions are the best there is in terms of quality too. They also reproduce Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Ashikaga Takaujis armors. No I wouldn't imagine such an armor as decorative as the one Shingen wore to be practical for battle even when just looking at it, it looks more like a display piece, a very beautiful one. Yeah, Kenshin had quite a few armors but my favorite is the Haramaki do Gusoku with the Izuna Gongen Maedate, it has beautiful blue, red and white silk and other materials as well and I do recently watching a video from that channel where Shogo dressed up in Shingens armor although while beautiful, he couldn't move his head from side to side but this probably explains why Shingen was never in the midst of battle, he was always positioned at his Honjin. According to Kamon stores in Japan the Sanadas original Kamon was a bird drawn with its wings spread and its head off to the left. The Rokumen was implemented by Nobushigue later on in his life. Can there be confirmation about this?

From what I have known, there are at least 3 Sanada kamon, the Rokumonsen being the most known. The bird one is said to be used especially in times of peace, while the Rokumonsen was used mainly in war.

Masayuki did what he had to, in order to survive, He switched allegiance so many times to keep his family alive and carry Shingen’s will, yet this proved he was one of the most loyal samurai in history. Nobushige made huge contributions in the only battle he took command, where the odds were beyond against him, all driven by his sense of loyalty and honor, the most true samurai of all.

The Sanada clan controlled the Agatsuma canyon and valley from Numata to Ueda with the help of Shugendo ninja. I was lucky enough to meet Iyoku Matsukaze and also the last Koga Ninja Jinichi Kawakami this summer. Iyoku is a direct descendant of a Sanada clan ninja. 14th generation.

My childhood favorite TV program was 真田十勇士 “Sanada Ten Braves”. That was a puppet show broadcasted by NHK, written by famous novelist Renzaburo Shibata based on the historic novel of Edo period. Ten brave men, samurais, warrior monks, ninjas fights for Sanada Yukimura. I first recognize the ninja Sarutobi Sasuke from that show.

23:00 the true bloodline still exist in Sanada Yukimura descendants. According to the legend and the rest of document, Before Battle of Tennoji, Sanada Yukimura wrote a letter to Date Masamune, please him to protect his third daughter, Sanada Ume and second son, Sanada Morinobu. And Masamune accepted. After the end of Battle of Tennoji, Date Masamune disguising Sanada Morinobu as soldier, loot as Sanada Ume and protecting them back to Sendai, appointing his most important and loyal kashin family, Katakura family hiding them in Shiroisi Castle, later made him served Date clan. Until 1640, the Edo Bakufu found there is a samurai called ''Sanada Morinobu'' being the kashin of Date clan and forcing Date clan to kill him, the katakura family and Date clan coperate to fake the fact, fraud that '' this samurai is dead in Battle of Tennoji, they are the different but had the same name.'' ,Although the Edo bakufu know they fake the facts but afraid Date clan's influence in the whole touhoku region, they accept the above phrase, and the Sanada Yukimura descendants still live until now.

I can't believe this video came out on my birthday! Although I watched it the next day, and until today I commenting it n_ñU But I can't help but taking this video as a birthday present XD XD The little but mighty Sanada clan! The favorite one of many people! It's interesting how Masayuki changed alliances too often while Yukimura (Nobushige) stayed loyal to the Toyotomi until the end. CLAMP's manga "Gate 7" and "Sengoku BASARA" anime introduced me to Yukimura's history and folclore. My favorite depictions until now is the Yukimura from NioH and, although quite unprecise, the one from Sengoku BASARA, especially Sanada Yukimura Den (Legend/Chronicles of Sanada Yukimura), in which the eponymous samurai, although ever shouting in keigo at loud voice, has an interesting development but without changing his essence. About Yukimura/Nobushige himself, it is said that his first succesfull strategy was when he was 17 years old: Sanada army was returning to Ueda, but in the way was the Houjou clan waiting. So, Nobushige ordered to either make or steal Houjou flags, and use them to pass through Houjou clan position at night. Houjou men thought there was a motin, and went into chaos. All of Sanada men got save to Ueda. For this feat, Masayuki allowed Nobushige the Rokumonsen in his armor. Also, it seems Toyotomi Hideyoshi got particularly fond of Yukimura, and even said he was "a true hero that only appears every 100 years". It's not strange he was arranged to be married with Ootani Yoshitsugu's daughter, Akihime, also known as Chikurin'in. It is even thought Yukimura and his father fought in Siege of Odawara for the Toyotomi. In Summer Campaign of Siege of Osaka, Yukimura's troops fought Date Masamune's army at Doumyouji. The Sanada could retreat successfully, and it's said that Masamune was so impressed by Yukimura that he promised him to take care of his children and vassals if Yukimura couldn't survive. This is the reason why in some media they romanticizes heavily a rivalry between Yukimura and Masamune (it helps that both of them were the same age), especially Sengoku BASARA being the main "culprit" of said rivalry XD XD I would like to add that fortunately there are descendants of Yukimura! It's true that Nobushige's older son, Sanada Daisuke, died at Osaka, but not the other son, Sanada Daihachi, who was sent to Katakura clan, vassals of Date, with some of his sisters too. Daihachi had to change their name in order to be hidden from Ieyasu. Years later, one of his descendants was allowed to retrieve Sanada name, and nowadays the 13th Yukimura descendant, Sanada Tooru, lives in Sendai (quite ironic, given Sendai is home to the Date Clan). I met him in December of 2017, and he showed me some war artifacts from last Sengoku era, including one black (!) armor worn by Yukimura himself! I think there is another Yukimura descendant branch, but I don't know if there is someone alive from that line. Of course, Nobuyuki too had also his descendants, like Shogunate said on this video. It's interesting how 1) thanks to Date clan, vassals of Tokugawa, archinemesis to Sanada, there is Yukimura's descendants, and 2) how Masayuki's plan to divide his family into West and East army supporters before Sekigahara went much better than he thought. I also went to Yasui Shrine, Osaka, in which is said Yukimura had died at the end of Siege of Osaka. It's a rather small and humble shrine (just as Yukimura was), with a simple grave, but you can feel there how much he is respected by people and considered a hero, people let there Sanada themed beverage bottles as offerings. Kudoyama, where Yukimura and Masayuki were exiled too, is also a place with a great love for Yukimura that rivals easily the ones you find in Osaka and Ueda. You find a Yukimura fan, you know you will be saluted :3 Great video, as always! Lastly, I have a question! What is Yukimura's full name? Sanada Saemonnosuke Genjirou Nobushige "Yukimura"? Allegedly, I'm told my family is somehow connected to the Takeda Clan. Their family name was "Sano", but I've found it really hard to track. I went to Japan in 2017 and was told by some distant family members of mine that Shingen had four known vassals, and that we could trace our heritage back to one of them. Wouldn't it be easier to ask your distant relatives in Japan about this? I did take a brief look at the JP Wikipedia page "武田信玄の家臣団" and there's a rather extensive list there that I didn't bother going through. I don't know how much Japanese can you read but it's a place to start if you're determined to do your own research.

Hello. I’m a Japanese and Japanese history lover. I’m very interested in your story. As you may know, Samo clan was a famous and strong clan in Kantou area. (You can search 佐野氏(さのし) by Wikipedia.) However, as far as I know, Sano clan was one of vassals of Houjyou clan at Sengoku period. So, I supposed that your ancestors battled against Takeda and Uesugi clan at that time. If you want to know your true blood line ,I recommend you to know which Daimyou your ancestors belonged to during Edo period. It will help you much. See you!!

A minor point but Katsuyori was a total putz.... Not only does he get the Takeda destroyed but yet again he failed when he had the chance to flee to the Sanada and was about to do so when another Takeda general, Oyamada Nobushige, suggested his castle of Iwadono instead ... When Katsuyori got to Iwadono, Oyamada denied him entry.... After Katsuyori committed suicide, Oyamada went to Nobunaga`s camp to get rewarded... And he was justly rewarded by having his head lopped off (rule 1, defect before the battle starts)... But basically Katsuyori blew the one chance he head

He chose iwadono castle because it was in the Takeda domain. According to one theory, the residential castle of the Oyamada clan was Tanimura-jo Castle and Iwaki-jo Castle located in the territory of the Oyamada family was under the direct control of the Takeda family so with this in mind, it means that he chose iwadono castle because it made sense at the time and the treachery of Oyamada Nobushige was not even made aware by then to Katsuyori. He did make mistakes though, for one. Kiso Yoshimasa, Shingens adopted son-in law and maternal relative, swicthed sides to Nobunaga because he was unhappy about the increased burden of the construction of Shinpu castle, a fortification built with the purpose of solidifying defense and reorganizing Takeda's army against the Oda-Tokugawa forces that would carry out an all out attack in future. He also had to levy war taxes on local samurai under him for that purpose but, it ended up being a catalyst for rebellion Some people attribute the rebellion of Kokujin-shu to Katsuyori's policies aiming for centralization. All men who betrayed Katsuyori were not relatives(all three married Shingens daughters) or direct vassals of Shingen but rather allies for various reasons however Katsuyori was never close to important vassals under Shingen either and this got rid of potential political barricades. Oyamada to ally with the Hojo, Kiso to block off threats from Mino and Anayama due to his strength and power as a Kokujin-shu of Kai.

According to the English Wikipedia, Yukimura did have four sons and seven daughters. His eldest son died at the siege of Osaka. His other sons were adopted to other families and they died during 1660s and 1670s. One of his daughters, Oume married Katakura Shigenaga, whose clan served the Date clan. Oume died at 1681. At least his two other daughters lived after the siege of Osaka both dying in 1635.
