It is important to clarify that many of the Korean troops who fought together with the Chinese during this part of the war were not the same unexperienced, untrained and poorly equiped conscripts who had not been able to stop the Japanese in the first part of the invasion: the best Korean forces stationed at the Northern border and their duty was to protect the country against the Jurchens. Unfortunately, when the Japanese started their invasion, these troops were already stuck in the middle of a conflict with the nomadic tribes and were not able to intervene and try pushing back the Japanese. When the Chinese forces finally arrived, the Jurchens were quickly repelled and the èlite Joseon troops were also able to join the the fight.

Yes. That is true. Korea placed its elite Army to guard the northern border, while the Korean Navy protected the southern part of the country.

Even more ironically, Nurhaci-the head of the Jurchens, future first emperor of the Qing dynasty and a future invader of Korea himself-fought against Kato Kiyomasa when the latter crossed into Manchuria.

@@itsrye8001 Li Dynasty is a completely civilian-controlled nation, not at war with the Manchu people at the time, but an elite in the north? Is out of the border garrison area, and even if this unit were located in the south, it is unlikely that it could have prevented 150,000 Japanese troops.

Almost everyone who was against this invasion had served as a logistic officer. The international war was so different than the war they fought at home. Imo, everyone absolutely underestimated Ishida Mitsunari. He might not be a field commander. However, when it came to broader strategy, which is crucial for a long-term war such as this, he actually had an edge over his peers. This became a source of conflict that would eventually lead to Sekigahara.

Never knew the part where Kiyomasa had a skirmish with the Jurchens who later become the Manchurians. There is a pretty good Docu Drama in Collaboration between China, Korea and Japan. Sadly there is no English sub in there. The show has historians explaining the whole conflict and then we see battle scenes of them fighting.

Despite the skirmish, the Manchurian kindof liked Japanese, and thought the they were relatively close racially (which may have some truth in it actually.) Such sentiment was later taken advantage of by the Japanese empire later in the 20th century.

@@engespress That was during one brief period immediately after Admiral Yi had been sacked, his replacement got the Korean navy almost completely destroyed, and Yi had to fight the Japanese immediately after being reinstated before he could rebuild. Myeongnyang was a massive tactical genius move on Yi’s part (VERY clever use of geographical bottlenecks and tidal currents to use the enemy’s numbers to his own advantage), and ensured that Korea got a second phase of naval supremacy at the tail end of the war. But the bulk of his military success actually came earlier with victory at Hansando. That was the battle that effectively allowed Koreans to seize control of seaborne transport during that early phase of the Japanese advance.

@@hideyoshiyamamoto893 Until Hideyoshi died and the Japanese troops withdrew, they continued to maintain food, weapons, and ammunition for 150,000 soldiers, so it is unlikely that the Korean Navy was doing what it was said in South Korea. Even in modern times, it is very difficult to send troops across the sea and maintain logistics, let alone this number of troops cannot be supported without constant transportation success in this era. If local procurement was not possible due to the guerrilla warfare and scorched earth operation as it is said in South Korea, the only way to replenish food, weapons and ammunition is to rely on transportation from Japan, and it is because the transportation was successful before and after 8 It is normal to think that he was able to continue the campaign of the year. Finally, the record of the Ming dynasty states that this campaign ended with the death of Hideyoshi, who had no chance of winning in Ming and Korea.

To be frank I honestly think that Kiyomasa's defeat at the hands of a Jurchen defending force should have at least pose another wearisome question to the Japanese: Even if they had secured their supply lines and stamped out every resistance force in Korea- Who is to say that even if they could have stepped into China en-route of the Northern border of Korea into Liaodong province that there is the possible threat in the Northern frontier of the Korean/Manchurian border of possibly being swept up by a horde army of ferocious Jurchen warriors? Something that should also be considered by Kiyomasa that luckily he was able to make an organized retreat back into Korea after being defeated at the hands of the Jurchens of him questioning- If it is even possible for the Japanese military to fight against steppe nomads and engage in steppe warfare with the Jurchens effectively?

From what I know about Ming, the emperor of the time rarely went to the court (上朝) to discuss matter with his advisors. However, the emperor actually showed up and discuss how to help Korea. The emperor also sold imperial property to raise money for the campaign. Some scholar believed this war cost too much money for the Ming and this is why Ming was unable to defeat the Manchus (later became the Qing dynasty) because most the elite forces suffered too much casualties during the Imjin war. In fact, Korea appreciated Ming’s help so much in that it secretly used Ming emperor’s name as a record of time after the Manchus conquered China.

Byeokjegwan ws actually BEFORE Haengju; the Korean forces at Haengju had to fend off the Japanese because the Chinese pulled back to regroup after Byeokjegwan, giving the Japanese some breathing room. Also, Haengju is almost a case study on par with Pickett’s Charge in why NOT to do infantry charges against a fortified high position well-equipped with artillery and layered defences. The Korean artillery (including the infamous hwachas-the rocket launchers that could fire 200 rocket-powered arrows per salvo) played the biggest role by cutting down the Japanese as they marched uphill. The Japanese did break through the first line of defences after several attempts, but failed to go further than that. It was so bad that it was a big part of why Mitsunari wasn’t popular in the aftermath of Hideyoshi’s death.

Byeokjaegwan was more of a messy stalemate than a decisive victory for the Japanese. They managed to corner Li Rusong and his retinue on a muddy hill after his reckless charge, but both sides took a pretty heavy beating and eventually withdrew after the bulk of the Ming/Joseon forces caught up to Li Rusong s surviving vanguard force.

It's debatable if the casaulty on the Ming / Korean side was that large in PyongYang, as they did manage to take the city very quickly, it's quiet rare that major cities fall in a day as it was in this case. One of the main problem may be that the Japanese didn't have enough troops to really cover all sides, at least from the Chinese sources it seems what happened was that the Li ru Song positioned his men in a matter that fooled Yukinaga into thinking the attack was coming fom the west side (where he was personally leading) but instead they switched around clothes between a lot of the Korean / Chinese soldiers and in fact they were attacking more heavily from the south etc, the logic in defending walled cities on the mainland isn't quite the same as defending the Japanese style castles. Also, it's probably not as much as the artilleries that did in the Japanese as the rocket arrows, which was not something the Japanese knew about until they arrived in this war, but the logistics report suggest a very large number of those used in this battle especially, and it probably help set fire to a significant portion of the city which contributed the Japanese further to panic / retreat back to their fortress built on the east side of the city wall. It was the same rocket arrows that really screwed them in Haengju. The report was that once the Japanese got back into the fortress in PyongYang the Chinese thought this position was too dangerous to directly assault but because the rest of the city was already lost and the Chinese used a standard tactic of leaving an opening for them to retreat, so Konishi more or less decided that he had to take that path and just abandon the fight. Most of the casualty happened when Konishi retreated through winter and the Chinese gave chase.

A Japanese pirate from the tushima domain who had pledged his oath to Hideyoshi was about to assult the ports of Pusan with his ashigaru. "Before I begin my attack, you must get on your knees and kowtow to the Hideyoshi and accept that he was the greatest ruler in history, even more so than the great king Sejong". At this moment, a sagacious, filial, scholar-yangban who has scored ahead of 150,000 students in the Civil Service Exams and fully supported the neo confucianist expansion of the house of Yi bust into the scene riding the heavenly 1000 ri horse. "Who's the greatest warrior in history island monkeys?" The arrogant professor smirked an oni like smiled and smugly replied "The samurais you stupid mainlander" "Wrong, If they were truly great wouldn't they have successfully taken over Korea during the 16th century invasion?" The professor was visibly shaken, he smashed his shamisen and his copy of the five rings. He stormed out of the room crying those barbaric crocodile tears. The same tears Japanese cried for the Japanese 'merchants' when the koreans kicked out all Japanese during the "disturbance of the three ports" when they jealously try to claw justly earned benifits from the deserving korean farmers. There is no doubt that at this point our sensei had lost his honour and wished he had pulled himself up by his bootstraps and become more than a barbaric islander. He wished that he had a sword to seppuku himself from embarrassment, but the unvirtuous shogun had taken all of his weapon away! The students applauded than accepted neo confucianism as there main ideology while also joining the 'righteous army'. A white tiger named “heaven protect us” strode into the room and perched atop the royal joseon flag and shed a tear on the chalk. The poem of the 'six flying dragon' was read several times and even admiral Yi reborn as an azure dragon showed up to sink every Japanese ship. The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He tried to have revenge by rading one of the korean ports with his wokus but they were all killed during a ambush by the 'righteous army'. While his entire clan and family was killed under the Tokugawa clan. His entire body was burned and destroyed to ashes while his soul was sent to the underworld where he was devoured and digested by the 1000 face fish monsters for all of eternity. May the glorious heaven protect kingdom of Joseon!
