The What If or Hypothetical Routes of DW 8 Xtreme Legends were the things that I really loved about that game or any Warriors game, changing some bits of the events in each campaigns leads to the major victory of the Kingdom you were on, resulting in the ending they wanted without any major casualties or loss in the end.

This game shows how koei and omega force really is. When they hit the jackpot on their spinoff or main games, they tend to mess it up again on the next (idk if its by purpose or not), this is what I feel like the main problem about the devs (or maybe the executives decision) instead of “Don’t fix that ain’t broken”, Another problem is their laziness to make unique things/traits on the character (unique weapons for each character, etc). But I do appreciate their improvements in story telling and some new inventions that maybe hit or miss.

And yeah, that's forever going to be an argument that people will have about the Warriors games. - "Don't change a thing!" vs "It's too repetitive! It needs innovation/improvement!" - "Improve the gameplay!" vs "Improve the story!" These things are always going to be subjects that the Warriors community is going to argue about.

The thing that annoyed me was they never really explained the betrayal of the Asakura and Azai. But I largely enjoyed the tighter focus it had on Akechi and Oda. I liked that they started with the early rise of Nobunaga.

Asakura betrayed because he believed Nobunaga was holding the Ashikaga shogunate hostage as Nobunaga assumed command over military and political matters so refused to visit the capital at Nobunaga's request. While I do miss the other characters, I am thoroughly enjoying this game (actually playing it right now while I’m watching this video). The only real complaint I have is a problem that I’ve noticed with the entire series and that’s the relationship between Nobunaga and Hideyoshi. Koei seems to treat their relationship as an afterthought and only focus on him and Mitsuhide. From what I can remember Nobunaga had a great relationship with Hideyoshi as opposed to Mitsuhide and the fact that they always try to make it seem like he’s passing on his will to him, only for him to get wrecked 11 days later just feels like a slap in the face for all three characters.

According to the epic novels based on history by I believe an author called Campbell, their history is extensive, beginning with the stories of him as a sandal bearer etc. In fact he came in the picture so early it is hard to believe how they just inserted him into warring scene as a kid, he was a kid but i believe he first entered battle when Nobunaga was already a man, as a peasant soldier once ago. Their age difference meant they have a lot of stories to be told, including their exchanges and often uneasy relationship, like hideyoshi managing to seize control in some forts against some sieging enemies etc.

I'm guessing that since SW5 is about Nobunaga's story from his early days to 1582 (Honnoji), SW6 may cover *Hideyoshi's story from his early days to his death in 1598* . It may also extend up to 1615 (Osaka Castle) if the next game revolves around the relationship between *Hideyoshi/Toyotomi family and Ieyasu* .

They could just add on more and more DLC for perspectives too - like a DLC for Hideyoshi, tracing his story from sandal bearer to general. It can add the whole story about which general got to where they are and why they join battles etc. This was something implemented in 3 kingdoms warriors 8, when we can join battles based on the enemy side.

I think characters like Ieyasu not aging is definitely a critique KT has been expecting, but chose to go with it anyway. From their perspective, I think, they simply did not want to "lock" themselves into specific designs for them, considering they are most likely going to be the most prominent characters in the sequel. It makes sense that they would want to work on them for as long as they have for Nobunaga and Mitsuhide.

My actual complaints about the game mechanics are pretty minor. For example, I wish you could access the shop and blacksmith at the start of battle. Because when the story gives you access to a character for the first time, lets say Hideoyoshi, he's the first Naginata user you unlock. If i want to check the shop to see if theres a Naginata with skill slots i can buy, I have to back out of the menu im in at least 3 times. THEN I have to got back into musou mode and skip through the cut scenes just to get back to where i was. It's very inconvenient! Otherwise the core gameplay is pretty good.

I do miss Ranmaru in the game but some part of my mind kinda get why he won't appears in the game. Theme game focus a lot about Nobunaga explaining his story and making him a even cooler character so what's the problem with Ranmaru?.. Ranmaru is a controvertial character not in the game but in the actual history of japan because aparently he not only was his young confidant, soldier and aprentise, apparently he also was his lover and that could be controvertial because some people deny that BIG possibilitie and in previos games KOEI insunuate and joke about Ranmaru's sexuality and even gender like in WO3 or SW2. And that's sucks because i really like him as a character.

I tried demo, it is good but I'll wait for price drop and complete edition. I think aging is previous problem from Spirit of Sanada, how Sasuke was always a kid while Yukimura got older. After Spirit of Sanada it was natural choice for making Oda focused story. This could be new route they could follow. Next story is most likely gonna be Hideyoshi. I'm cool with lack of Hideyoshi's vassals but Ranmaru Mori, Niwa Nagahide and Takigawa Kazumasu should be in the game. I liked what if scenarios, it was a missing feature in a long time in SW series. It is a soft reboot for the series hope they improve it. I really wanna play Mori focused series, wanna see his struggle against Amago and Ouchi clan or Hojo story starting from Hojo Soun to Siege of Odawara. And of course Takeda and Uesugi stories. We barely saw Takede in Spirit of Sanada, wanna play Shingen's early years and wanna play as his vassals like Masakage, Nobufusa and Naito.

I've played the warriors series ever since Dynasty Warriors 2. The previous entry, Samurai Warriors 4 was grand in scope and I think gives a nice piece meal for each of the clans throughout the Sengoku Jidai. The story being cut to one specific timeframe in SW 5, I don't understand why they didn't just do a Spirit of Oda kind of game rather than making a main entry "reboot". Yeah, SW 1 did this specific timeframe before, but that has aged quite some time and felt like a genuine spin off to Dynasty Warriors; especially DW 4 with its gritty style. SW has gone toe to toe with DW and I feel the SW series is on par and like a younger brother sub franchise to DW. While I played the game, it just made me want to play SW 4 again. The unique move sets for each character felt good and I didn't outright hate some like in SW 1/2 thanks to the hyper attack sets introduced in later entries. This game has a severe case of cloned move sets and is spanned very thinly. DW 7 had clones, but it had more weapon variety and move set variety that helped with the monotony. There's fewer characters, why not make unique move sets to them. And don't give me the excuse of too many characters for unique move sets. DW 8 has more and all have unique moves and weapons. Plus you can swap them between characters like in this game. The music, being one of the main standouts I eagerly look forward to in DW and SW, is lackluster in this game. It feels generic and doesn't have it's own distinct style that I associate SW with; the techno/traditional Japanese music. It copies a similar style to DW with epic grand music with even some metal guitar that DW is known for. Even the remixed SW 4 music sounds forgettable. Combat is fine, though it's a warriors game. They all play similarly with some added features here and there. The whole cooldown ability is just annoying to me with me zipping around the battlefield only to be stopped by a regiment of soldiers needing to be killed by a specific ability and if it's on cooldown, just gotta wait for the thing to come back. Slows down combat unnecessarily. TLDR: Overall disappointment of an installment for me. This barely feels like a reboot and has less features. Music is forgettable. Graphics look good and plays like a warriors game.

I really enjoyed this review. I just finished Nobunaga's story today. I enjoyed it, but I agree with you on so much here. It could have been much more, especially after Spirit of Sanada. There are some characters that needed to be here, and I would have liked if the relationship between Nobunaga and Mitsuhide was a more historically accurate. I think if that was the case Mitsuhide would have probably been a sympathetic figure by the end and players might have felt something more by the time you get to Honnoji. Also, Ranmaru is very much needed here. The combat is fine. The graphics are fine. The story and modes is a bit lacking. I also want this story to continue, and from what I can tell it seems like this game is setting it up. Let's just hope that Hideyoshi and Ieyasu age in the next one. If they go that route, it would be very interesting, but we would at least get a lot more characters that we're used to seeing. I had a problem with the cloned movesets, but I think after watching this it made me appreciate it. I didn't like the fact that Yasuke had gloves, well, now he doesn't have to have them. Problem solved. I think the biggest problem with this game is the freaking camera! Let's hope that Koei Tecmo fixes that up in the sequel.

This game really feels like its a setup for a future game, more than a game on its own... like... I can see the bases for a lot of neat stuff here... but its just that, the basis new art style, new stylish take on musou, the new skill system, some of the new weapons and characters... It all has tons of potential, but does not reach it, feeling more like an incomplete game or a test to what they can do next time, be it in an extreme legends like expansion, or SW 6 Edit: Hell, the aging thing... a lot of the re-designs fel like they are supposed to be younger, to be aged into more traditional looks for them as they grow older, but they only did it with nobunaga and mitsuhide... which makes me feel like they are planning to add older versions of other cast members in future games/expansions.

As much as I like the game, it's not perfect. For it to be an amazing entry in the series, it could've done a bit more, story-wise. Like there were plenty of battles that were cut out from Nobunaga's military career like the Hongonji genocide and razing of the Saika Village and the feeling that certain characters were dropped from the story out of nowhere, especially Toshiie and Katsuie who were barely in any of the battles of the later half of the chapters compared to the first half. I really feel like that this game could've been AT LEAST 10 chapters long instead of the lowly 6 chapters we got to flush out more from these characters, because I was really craving for an in depth look at how Katsuie and Oichi's relation grew after the Azai incident due to the fact that they marry each other eventually, or hoping for more of a friendship between Toshiie and Mitsuki since Toshiie was the one who gave Mitsuki away. The focus on Nobunaga and Mitsuhide was good, because that's the main focus, but I actually felt like they tried too hard to focus on them. If that makes sense.

15:00 I know EXACTLY why they left ranmaru out, it hit me as I was playing through it He previously filled the nishe that both Mitsuhide and Yasuke fill, so he was all but chucked out of the plot so they could have a bigger focus on Mitsuhide's relationship to nobunaga, and full on gave his role as Nobunaga's closest retainer to Yasuke. I dont remember if this is historical accurate or not, but in earlier SW games, Ranmaru basically joined togheter with Mitsuhide and worked for the saito clan; Since they REALLY wanted to push the enemies to closest of friends thign with Mitsuhide and nobunaga, they probably felt Ranmaru would take from it.

I'm going to try and keep this short as I feel that it would mostly be a repeat of what you and others on this platform have said. I liked this gamea lot. I feel your review hit all my points with it. However, I want to say that for me the two biggest pain points in this game are as follows. The first being that it was very hard to take things with Ieyasu seriously late game. A twelve year old talking about the actions of his adult son was pretty awkward. The second pain point is an issue I've had with Koei since Samurai Warriors 2. I feel that they have plenty of famous generals and evens strategists in the game. However the lack of Niwa Nagahide is insane at this point. I was so excited and thought with an Oda focused game most likely followed by a Hideyoshi focused game Nagahide HAS to be in this as a new character. Not only was he essential to Nobunaga's rise but after the fall of Nobunaga it would be Hideyoshi, Nagahide, and Katsuie that determined the fate of the clan, thus easily setting up Nagahide to be a key character in both this game and whatever comes after it. Sadly, once again, Nagahide was denied such respect and I feel like that stings. I can understand not having Ranmaru to some degree as they seemed to have Yasuke take on a lot of Ranmaru's roles however not having Nagahide be significant felt like an oddly large oversight for a company like Koei that has done Samurai Warriors, Nioh, and Kessen.

While i do adore Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune (who were the first characters i played in SW1) I get why they're not in the game. I think it's cool that people like Saito Dosan, Takeda Katsuyori, Asakura Yoshikage, and Ashikaga Yoshiaki, all have unique designs since they were all important figures. I was very excited when i saw Yasuke and Yamanaka Shikanosuke for the first time, since i've been waiting for them to finally be playable. While all of that is cool, it is really puzzling why Ranmaru isn't playable since he died protecting Nobunaga and he was in the first game. Speaking of SW1, considering how many ninjas are in this game, where the heck is Ishikawa Goemon? You had already mentioned Niwa Nagahide, but i'm also bummed that Takigawa Kazumasa and Ranmaru's father, Mori Yoshinari, were generic officers.

My main question is: What will Koei Tecmo do with Samurai Warriors franchise as its 20th Anniversary is approaching in 2024? I think Spirit of Sanada gave us high expectatives to the main game series, and SW5 was a big downgrade to what Omega Force could do. Also, SW5's release was too near for the 20th Anniversary of the main game series, so... I don't know, I hope what Koei Tecmo will do in 2024 meet the fans expectations.

This game was such a disappointment. I just want the Warriors franchise to get back to being able to have a customized character where there are sub missions that make the main mission easier. I forget if it was DW3/4/5 that did this. Two easy examples of the above are when you'd be able to go destroy windmills that would stop your troops from getting pushed back, or go fight a guy who was throwing boulders down a cliff to stop him. My favorite was a sub mission where you could empty the moat and then walk around inside it to navigate a castle easier and would empty the moat when you'd siege the castle later on.

Agree with a lot you had to say about this Game, except the Part about Weapons... In my Opinion it rly Hurts the Uniqueness of Charakters. This goes for the lack of unique Weapons aswell as for the interchangeability. Rly Disliked it when they started doing this in DW... always hoped SW would not go down that path. Anyway, i still think i will enjoy this Game, good Review thx for the work^^

My thoughts exactly. Weapon switching really does hurt the uniqueness of a character and is a poor testimony to combat design. It makes characters feel interchangeable as though they are just an assortment of skins. If a character’s move set is so bad that you have to change their weapon to another one that that’s a sign of poor game design. Also why pick up and learn a character is I can just take my favorites and apply whatever move set I want to them? There is an alternative that I saw in Sengoku Basara where there are multiple characters that have the same weapons but wildly different styles. Why can’t Koei do that?
@reanquarzer777
@reanquarzer777 3 жыл бұрын
@@shawnboahene5231 True! Well Koei could just keep it as it was in SW4 or every entry before that, i don't even need them all to be perfectly Balancend, its not a competetiv game. As another long time fan of Samurai Warriors (Who also coincidentally was introduced to the series through SW2: Empires) I agree with most of your review. The story while unique was kind of underwhelming and I also dislike Katuie's redesign. And while I don't mind the roster cuts in order to facilitate the narrower story focus I really don't like the removal of unique weapons. I know there were a lot of silly ones in SW4 but it really makes the character's feel less unique gameplay wise. Thankfully this is the best the series has ever been on a gameplay front so I can live with my gripes. Overall I agree that the overall package is a 7/10 but it does get me excited for what comes next. They have never nailed the gameplay aspect of a Warriors/Musou title as hard as they have with this one and I would love to see the same systems in a 5-2 or a 5 Empires.

About the weapons: Do the characters still have unique attacks when using the weapon type of your choice? Being able to choose the weapon type freely is something that existed in the Dynasty Warriors series for a long time and is one of my main problems with it: After a while, every character just feels the same and loses their individuality. It also makes every character usable because you can just give them another weapon if you don't like their weapon, so it's not entirely bad, but the characters do feel less unique when they can use any weapon in the game. It, of course, depends on how it's done in SW5, but hearing that it exists in the game doesn't make me excited. I also hoped it would be more like Spirit of Sanada for the story when I heard they wanted to focus on Nobunaga and Mitsuhide, it's sad they didn't do that as well as in Spirit of Sanada with the Sanada clan. I'll probably still play it, but not sure when.

In feudal Japan, there was the concept of the Warrior Monk (they get often referred to today as "Sohei"). Being that temples and monastic institutions were so ingrained into Japanese society, their monks often took up fighting to not only defend themselves but also enforce their spheres of influence. Their were also very radical sects like the Ikko Ikki who were troublesome.

I honestly think the Samurai Warrior franchise is dead for me. I really don't like their way of telling bits and pieces of the story. Like Final Fantasy I think I'll have to give up on the Samurai Warriors series.

For me, this game feel more like an unofficial "Kessen 4" game although there is not alot of equipment to play around with. Well, for once I kinda like the new aesthetic look of the characters, as their armor look a little bit closer to their historical counterparts. Also it funny how SW games always give Akechi long hair when historically Nobunaga been insulting him as an "Onion Head" due to his baldness. I wonder what kind of DLC will come out, 100% sure that Hideyoshi post Yamazaki campaign will be focused on, and also a little bit of Ieyasu from his rise to power as well. As Shogunate mentioned, one good thing with this new SW is that they focus more on the "smaller but popular in folklore" samurai, my favorite is the Yamanaka Shikanosuke, who is famous even at his time being the "Most loyal Samurai" and fought in a doomed battle to save his lord clan who already lost interest in it. I only encountered him in a manga made by Tetsuo Hara when he did Sengoku period manga like Sakon Shima.

Kinda crazy how Kessen III basically did this whole story better so many years ago. Through that, Koei has shown they can do a good story but SW5's story in many regards tries to copy that gold without putting in the work to get there. Lost count of how many times something big and critical happens with zero build-up or hint of it coming, like certain characters' betrayals
