The Smoking Tire hits the canyons in the new and mostly improved Dodge Challenger SRT 392. Are the recent updates to the Challenger enough to make it a true sports car? Or is it still just a luxury cruiser?

I could not a agree more with the assessment of it being the last true muscle cars, the mustang and Camaros are great cars, but they are sports cars, not muscle cars.
@lusitanovalente

The Mustang was more of a real muscle car due to its live rear axle and more retro interior. Now if your talking about the 2015 then I agree

@JoeRouMonsta Some people don't drive canyons, and they don't drive tracks. They just cruise around town to work and stuff, and for that, the Challenger is excellent.

And, they rule the dragstrips! The 392s in my area tear it up, plus they are still a beast on the street. Smiles per mile, and make great daily drivers as well.

Hey Matt, 7 years I was in a bad bad car accident, beat up from top to tows, they had to operate everything in my body, knie, hip, back, neck,... my back came out perfect, so no worries, have patience, rest well, you'll be fine in a while! Thanks for all the cool car stuff over the years!!

Especially considering it's practically the only one that does so! I love the Challenger. I never get tired of seeing them on the road, and I don't see as many as I do Mustangs and Camaros, and I'm dying to drive one. It's my personal favorite out of the 3 and it doesn't really compete with the Mustang and Camaro considering they've really become sports cars. The Challenger has stayed true to American Muscle which is one of my favorite things about it.

Honestly, one of the best Smoking Tire reviews I've seen. Witty, to the point, funny, informative, boom. Well done! The Charger is one of the most beautiful cars on the road period. The only thing I would ever change is give it fatter rear tires. I've always been partial to a car that can handle but the way this thing looks with that Dodge Viper GTS paint job, I'd be willing to make some sacrifices.

@StaticFalconar I hurt my back for the first time in 2003 doing the Baja 1000 in the BCS-1 class. Didn't crash or anything, but 20 hours of spinal compressions wasn't a good thing. Had surgery then, and the same thing happened again from just too many cars/planes/bad hotel rooms while filming The Car Show. So I've now had the same surgery twice.

Good luck with the surgeries playa, I wish you the best recovery possible! Take it from me 3 knee and 1 back surgery, become as active as you can, the SECOND you start laxing is the second bones and joints (pun intended) start to seize like pistons without oil. Activity keeps the bones and joints lubed. I listened to others suggest rest to recover when I needed movement. My grand national still isn't done :( I have small parts only left now though, looking for 10's when I'm back. Godspeed

@nizmojoeblows yeah, but the challenger has a 6.4L V8 compared to your 5.4 (or 4.6), and is hard not to drive really fast. Generally when we test cars we observe far worse fuel economy than manufacturers claims, but in this car it was dead on.

@crashnshaman I said in the video "The challenger is the last true muscle car." If you want it to be a muscle car, leave it right as is. If you wanted to make it a Sports car, like the Mustang now is, you'd need to find a way to shave at least 500 pounds out of it, which just wouldn't happen without a total redesign.

@crashnshaman A muscle car, by the classic definition, is big, heavy, and comfy, with a gigantic V8 under the hood that makes tons of noise but doesn't really make the car go all that fast. If that doesn't sound like the dodge challenger, I don't know what does. A sports car emphasizes light weight, handling, and making the experience of driving quickly on a canyon road or a track that much more pleasurable. Think Corvette, not Cobalt.

@Kpoole35 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on you're view towards design, but if you want to know it's weight? Then just 50 lbs lighter then, but that shouldn't be an issue when you have that much power, I mean it got a 11 second 1/4 mile for crying out loud.
@babloo1666
@babloo1666 10 жыл бұрын
TheSPARTANkp97 im sure that 50 lb decrease in weight did help, probably why they did it for the hellcat...maybe it can get lighter and have a faster time, don't know. I also don't like the fact they removed the fog lights on the hellcat. but other than that its a great car, great aura about it, I wisj hellcats came in other colors other than red

@RichardEllisxyz I would make the argument that a Trans-Am BOSS 302 with proper modern tires would beat the SRT8 around a track. And while I agree the Challenger pulls off the spirit and look of the original, I wish it were the size of the original. Park this one next to a '70 model and it looks like a minivan. And the interior room isn't even all that much different!

Given all your experience with all types of cars, I would be stoked if you can make a review on stock Cobra. @piwright42 OK, I understand your reference, but lets talk about reality. Most cars built between 1964 and 1972 that people would consider muscle cars aren't actually small with a BIG engine in them. Most of them are giant land yachts. The small ones, Corvette, Cobra, etc, are remembered by us as sports cars. The Chevelles, GTO's, Chargers, etc are big and heavy, make a lot of noise, and don't go very fast. So maybe instead of "traditional" i should have said "realistic"

It is, to my knowledge, not a standard blue that you can buy the Challenger in. This blue was specifically for the Inaugural Edition 2011 SRT 392. Of course you could probably get a custom paint job, but that specific blue along with the white leather was part of that specific pack.

@dieseldan420ca the 2011 GT500 is great. But you're talking about mod-ability, which is pretty useless in that car unless you're running full slicks. Countless tests have shown that the 750 HP Shelby Super Snake is actually slower around a race course than the 550 HP stock GT500. The Mustang's chassis is very versatile, able to be a $23,000 rental car or a $55,000 Shelby no problem, but it simply can't put down much more power than comes with the stock GT500.

I drove the SRT8 when shopping for a new car and I agree on all your points (particularly a point you made in the DC challenge video where it doesn't FEEL like it should have a manual transmission) it's too plush a ride. It was a tough call between the challenger and the new 5.0 but I ended up getting the 5.0 as it was just plain more fun to drive. I personally think that the SRT looks better though.. easily the best looking american car in production right now.
