These cars are not only my favorite Camaro body but might be my favorite muscle car body from the era. Perhaps I am crazy but these cars conjure Italian styling in my mind. From the time I was a young child when these cares were everywhere and I knew nothing about cars I was fascinated with this shape. I have owned a 2 67 cougars and a 69 Barracuda Fast back 30 years ago and a 79 Corvette more recently.I am with Matt on disliking Old cars in regards to feeling safe and the abysmal handling, brakes etc. This I would love to own if I had the money. The roll cage is sweet in its integration. For my purposes I don't need the bullet proof motor and any NA garden variety LS 500 HP would suit me fine. Would need a good stereo. Wish he asked what the car would cost to have built and how much the Fancy LS Block motor costs?

Like many who watch these videos, I appreciate how I can relax into the way Matt thoroughly critiques each car he drives for what it is. The series with Detroit Speed has been special, because these folks really allow a deep connection to be felt by the viewer and as always, Matt is just so appreciative of their passion. Thanks so much for continuing to recreate our ideas of fun by driving, enjoying and evaluating the rides of complete strangers!

I would buy this type of car everyday all day all day over any Ferrari or Lamborghini. This day in age the technology exists to make em handle and there is really nothing that exudes the attitude that muscle cars do. You can tell he loves it. Great review once again Matt.

OK Mat, when watching videos there are the 'good ones' let's say the 6+'s. Then for the higher echelons, I rank them accordingly: 1. Goose pimples at some point during video, 2. Goose pimples brought on by just the introduction alone and throughout the video, and 3. Brings tears (literally) to my eyes (usually a Petrolicious video because it connects the human element). This car is, without a doubt a massive #2. Holy freaking shiite!
@SIMKINETICS8 жыл бұрын
I once owned two Camaros at the same time, a '67 RS and a '71 bottom-of-the-line 6-banger, so I could compare handling between the 1st & 2nd generation designs. GM had significantly improved the design for handling in the newer version. The '67 RS was the predecessor to the Z28 that was introduced later that year with the amazing 302 CID engine that could rev to 9,000 rpm and produced about 425 hp despite its published rating of 290 hp. I converted my RS to a Z28 configuration with a bored-out 283 with all mods to emulate the Z28 motor and upgrades to the entire drive-train, with a forged & balanced crank, forged con-rods & pistons, angle-plug heads w/ 2.02" intake valves, etc. Eventually, I went extreme with everything to improve handling too, so I knew what it took to make the Camaro handle, which paid off in autocross racing where I once took a first against a field of 500+ competitors in my racing class. Still, by comparison to the refinements in modern sporty cars, it was a violent beast with some bad manners! It looks like Detroit Speed has taken modern technologies and implanted them in this 47-year-old platform with some success. As Matt points out, modern technology has come a long way in refining the engineering throughout the entire car, so I doubt that the potential of a 1970 chassis could ever match what automotive engineers accomplish now. The Camaro brand is 50 years old, and it died for a while. I'm so glad that GM revived it with a nice styling treatment of the retro look and some impressive new tech that pays homage to the revolutionary spirit that pony-cars once had!

I raced against this guy at a SCCA CAM Challenge event not long ago. Mike Dusold had his shop car and a gang of his customers out there too, if you're not familiar with the name Dusold check it out because it's worth the time. Now, these guys were all damn fast, but guess what spanked them all handily.... Dude with an '88 Firebird, car had stock interior, no cage, even had stock brakes! It even had an old school Chevy 350, sounded very healthy but definitely wasn't upwards of 650-800+hp like the other cars. It did have very wide wheels, at least 315's and very good quality suspension, but it goes to show autocross is all about car setup and positioning!

In response to Matt's comment about the ubiquitous LS: LSs are the go-to for modern builds, but for Pontiac fans, you can still build a brand new Pontiac-based engine with all new aftermarket parts and not a single original Pontiac part. We truly live in a golden era of performance.

I wish: A 1978-86 European Ford Capri MkIII, Art Morrison chassis or full Detroit Speed front & rear subs and suspension topped with a Mast LS engine. It would be a 1000 pounds lighter than a Camaro. Alas, the Capri with all its good looks and high euro sales and following is a bit of an orphan in the US. But if DS paid it some attention, its low cost, smaller size and light weight would make it a world beater.
