This is some good stuff right here. 100 & 200 yard gel tests. This is the correct range for gel testing as it the range that most hunting shots are taken at. So kudos to you Kyle for getting it right, I do hope that you start a trend in distance testing when using gel blocks.

These use federal fusion bullets. The 62 grain version expands great at 1700 fps. From my 11.5 I hit 1700 at 300 yards. This stuff is incredible, it doesn't depend on extremely high velocities for terminal performance like the FMJ and OTMs do.

The 75gr bonded by Speer measure in length - 0.936". That at 2650fps is enough to stabilize 1/9 twist by Berger stability calculator. At 2650fps it is spin stable down to 2200fps so that is 200 yards of stable spin flight and then past 200yds dipping under marginal spin stability. A faster twist of 1/8 or 1/7 is total spin stable down to 1180fps.
@jasonshults368
@jasonshults368 8 ай бұрын
Bullets drop in velocity far faster than they drop in spin rate. Thus they get MORE stable as they fly, until they get down into the trans-sonic range. Your calculations are moot.
@dud3man6969
@dud3man6969 2 жыл бұрын
I ran the numbers and I believe the 62 grain gold dot will have a velocity of 1700 fps and expand perfectly at 300 yards from an 11.5" barrel. I don't have the muzzle velocity for the 75 grain Gold Dot yet, but I think it will go a little further because of that insane BC.

90% of all ARs have 16 inch barrels. There are a lot of 14.5 pinned, but the 16 inch is the overwhelming majority and in my opinion, the best length for “do it all” length. 20 inch barrels are great for long range shooting. Therefore most of the testing should be done with the above barrel lengths.

Love the Speer bullets I usually use the 64gn in the federal power shock factory loaded ammo. I’d like to see this compared with the hornady 75gn sbr interlock that’s what my son is currently using for deer. It’s only rated on the box at 2360fps but that’s out of a 10.5” barrel. We are getting just over 2600fps out of a 16”

I used the speer factory loading (.223) with these bullets to take two whitetail this fall. Instant expansion lots of energy dump. Barley enough penetration at 50 yards on mature doe broadside... Exit hole was pretty small. The other was a headshot which worked well. I would use again to get more data.

Not sure if you have done it yet, but Speer also make a 168gr in a .30cal version. I'm going to be reloading some in the near future and testing it using accurate 2460, XBR, 4064 and 4895. Also interested to put some in a 7.62x39 and seeing how they perform, but I don't know if they will get to a high enough velocity to really get the mushroom needed. Perhaps I will get some gel.

BC regression on your 75gr Gold Dot is 0.280 G1 based on actual usage/data. This makes sense, as the 77TMK clocks in at just over 0.4, and I can promise that it's a lot slicker than the Gold Dot. I have no idea why Federal lists it's BC as 0.4+

Hey unobtanium, how effective would you say this gold dot is compared to the TMK on medium game? I know the TMK is devastating (borderline overkill on shoulder shots), but is the 75gr gold dot nearly as good? Idk if you've personally used it, but I thought I saw you mention it in a forum thread once.

@@asdfghjk2933 One of my friends shot a deer with it. Well, two of them have so far that have reported back on it to me. In both cases they were very impressed with it. It's a function of bullet length, density, and diameter. .308 bullets have a larger diameter, so they can achieve gyroscopic stability with a lower twist rate. 1:8 probably won't work with an 85-grain .223 Rem. You'll probably need 1:7 or even faster.

@@SocialRegressive oh ok. Yea I'll probably go for the 1 in 7 because I don't wanna use anything less than a 75 grain because I'm not trying to punch through armor. If they have armor then I'll just go for the pelvic region or thighs. An with those heavier rounds using soft points I'm sure that will make them second guess the whole reason they came to the party lol tbh tho I'm thinking they'll use the unnatural disasters an maybe some emps on hypersonic rockets and those underwater posiedon nukes then regular ones because they know they would lose so many guys if they came here for a ground game. Hopefully everyone is willing to put our differences aside in times of war until we get rid of the common enemies. They need to get biden out of office cuz he's a POS an I can't believe we had to get an ok from his old ugly decrepit ass to take that blimp down. I'm gonna break the unwritten rule of reloading and give out the whole recipe (gasp!): WSR primers, 24.9 grains of 2000-MR, Lake City brass, 2.235" COAL, 1.850" to the ogive. I was able to get these faster than 2600 fps (26.1 gr) with no high pressure signs, but the precision wasn't there.

I haven’t used any of those loads on deer, but from what I’ve heard on forums (look up the user “formidilosus” on Rokslide), the 75gr is in a different league. I also saw a photo of a deer taken by the 75gr gold dot on reddit, and the heart was absolutely pulverized. Red goo with no discernible shape or structure. I know 62gr tbbc or 70gr tsx still jacks shit up, but not to that extent. I don’t have 100% concrete proof, I’m just going off of anecdotes. I may well be wrong.

I was thinking 200 yards would have been too far and it would fall below expansion threshold, I feel a little better about the 75gr now. The accuracy is great from the 1:7 twist barrels as well. You mentioned the hornady 75gr BTHP wasn’t working too well; have you had any chance to test it in gel? They’re supposed to be a pretty effective self defense bullet. Subscribed.

JimmyEG1 It’s the best performing bullet you are going to get for a 556. Personally, I use the Barnes 168gr tsx in my AR-10, but from what I have seen all of Barnes offerings perform very consistently. I hunt in a part of East central Texas that only has 300 yards maximum to take a shot. Let’s just say if I can see the pig, it’s dead. For 556 shot placement is key, and I’m confident it would be good out to about 200 yards. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but the large boars can take three hits of .308 to the vitals and still run 100+ yards. I have not had a Barnes bullet not do what it is supposed to do.

Very good presentation here. I think this will be the bullets I go with for my very first reloads. Am I dumb for wanting to reload .223/5.56 for my first handloads?? Also have you considered maybe a 9 shot group for accuracy testing? You know more than I do but I think Henry makes some good points here. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGWTgJ2VlL6aq8k

I agree with Hamm 603 100%. You are not using the correct tool for this task. A .308 with 130gr. TTSX will allow you to take multiple targets with little recoil reload to 2500fps. I fully understand hogs are a issue but as ethical hunters we must ethically dispatch our quarry. The anti gun crowd is always s looking for angles to put us in a bad place. Gel tests are interesting when comparing projectiles but you may get different results in the field. Keep up your good work.

Sorry my young friend but it already exists. A 168gr softnose 308 drops a hog one shot. No super-cala-frajalistic space age gun or bullet. It's nice you are having fun but hunting hogs with a .223 is wrong. Clean kill, nothing else is acceptable.

@@gascheck8151 AR's are the only thing I hunt with. Where I hunt, we have bears. If I'm in the woods, You bet your bottom dollar I have a semi auto. A 75 grain gold dot is plenty for deer and hogs. I usually grab my AR10 because of the bears though. Were it not for that, I would have no problems taking an AR15 to go after deer and hogs. With a PROPER bullet, the 5.56 is a lot more gun than people think.
