These use federal fusion bullets. The 62 grain version expands great at 1700 fps. From my 11.5 I hit 1700 at 300 yards. This stuff is incredible, it doesn't depend on extremely high velocities for terminal performance like the FMJ and OTMs do.

Now this word caddywhompus ,hadn't heard no one say that in a while, good word ,Speer makes a great bullet
@1RobHunter13 жыл бұрын
The 75gr bonded by Speer measure in length - 0.936". That at 2650fps is enough to stabilize 1/9 twist by Berger stability calculator. At 2650fps it is spin stable down to 2200fps so that is 200 yards of stable spin flight and then past 200yds dipping under marginal spin stability. A faster twist of 1/8 or 1/7 is total spin stable down to 1180fps.
@jasonshults3688 ай бұрын
Bullets drop in velocity far faster than they drop in spin rate. Thus they get MORE stable as they fly, until they get down into the trans-sonic range. Your calculations are moot.
@dud3man69692 жыл бұрын
I ran the numbers and I believe the 62 grain gold dot will have a velocity of 1700 fps and expand perfectly at 300 yards from an 11.5" barrel. I don't have the muzzle velocity for the 75 grain Gold Dot yet, but I think it will go a little further because of that insane BC.

90% of all ARs have 16 inch barrels. There are a lot of 14.5 pinned, but the 16 inch is the overwhelming majority and in my opinion, the best length for “do it all” length. 20 inch barrels are great for long range shooting. Therefore most of the testing should be done with the above barrel lengths.

BC regression on your 75gr Gold Dot is 0.280 G1 based on actual usage/data. This makes sense, as the 77TMK clocks in at just over 0.4, and I can promise that it's a lot slicker than the Gold Dot. I have no idea why Federal lists it's BC as 0.4+

It's a function of bullet length, density, and diameter. .308 bullets have a larger diameter, so they can achieve gyroscopic stability with a lower twist rate. 1:8 probably won't work with an 85-grain .223 Rem. You'll probably need 1:7 or even faster.

The call of the wildcat hasn't snagged me yet, but I've been awfully close a time or two.

I was thinking 200 yards would have been too far and it would fall below expansion threshold, I feel a little better about the 75gr now. The accuracy is great from the 1:7 twist barrels as well. You mentioned the hornady 75gr BTHP wasn’t working too well; have you had any chance to test it in gel? They’re supposed to be a pretty effective self defense bullet. Subscribed.

I'd recommend at least a .243 for big hogs.

The Social Regressive I can say from my hunting experiences with deer and pigs that they work better than any jacketed lead hollow point I have tried

@@abelstraw4562 70 gr tsx correct? How good do they kill hogs and whats the furthest shot you have tooken with it?
@abelstraw45624 жыл бұрын
JimmyEG1 It’s the best performing bullet you are going to get for a 556. Personally, I use the Barnes 168gr tsx in my AR-10, but from what I have seen all of Barnes offerings perform very consistently. I hunt in a part of East central Texas that only has 300 yards maximum to take a shot. Let’s just say if I can see the pig, it’s dead. For 556 shot placement is key, and I’m confident it would be good out to about 200 yards. I know that doesn’t sound like much, but the large boars can take three hits of .308 to the vitals and still run 100+ yards. I have not had a Barnes bullet not do what it is supposed to do.

Very good presentation here. I think this will be the bullets I go with for my very first reloads. Am I dumb for wanting to reload .223/5.56 for my first handloads?? Also have you considered maybe a 9 shot group for accuracy testing? You know more than I do but I think Henry makes some good points here. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rGWTgJ2VlL6aq8k

You should try some 180 grain...Oh wait...I meant to say you could have had a V8...Wait...I meant a .308 LOL Put some bone in that gel and watch what happens to a match bullet compared to regular hunting bullets

We have some ideas for using a chunk of PVC as simulated bone. Might give it a try.

I agree with Hamm 603 100%. You are not using the correct tool for this task. A .308 with 130gr. TTSX will allow you to take multiple targets with little recoil reload to 2500fps. I fully understand hogs are a issue but as ethical hunters we must ethically dispatch our quarry. The anti gun crowd is always s looking for angles to put us in a bad place. Gel tests are interesting when comparing projectiles but you may get different results in the field. Keep up your good work.

Sorry my young friend but it already exists. A 168gr softnose 308 drops a hog one shot. No super-cala-frajalistic space age gun or bullet. It's nice you are having fun but hunting hogs with a .223 is wrong. Clean kill, nothing else is acceptable.
@gascheck81515 жыл бұрын
Hamm 603 I agree fully. I call this younger bunch the " bang bang Elmer Fud crew". What ever happened to one shot one kill down and out. That'swhat I was taught. I would never hunt with a AR.

Funny how I've seen 50+ hugs dropped with one 5.56. Funny how I've also seen a 160 pound doe take a round from a .308 and run for over a mile and not be found for 2 weeks. Funny how that happens Elmer

@@gascheck8151 AR's are the only thing I hunt with. Where I hunt, we have bears. If I'm in the woods, You bet your bottom dollar I have a semi auto. A 75 grain gold dot is plenty for deer and hogs. I usually grab my AR10 because of the bears though. Were it not for that, I would have no problems taking an AR15 to go after deer and hogs. With a PROPER bullet, the 5.56 is a lot more gun than people think.
