Winter wild camping in the Lake District on Red Screes in my Durston X Mid tent. I was joined on the trip by Evgenia in her Hilleberg Akto for a wet and very windy night in the mountains.
Many thanks for watching - Dave

Your companion with the Akto chose the better shelter for the conditions Dave! The X-mid is impressive in what it offers in terms of space and relative security for the weight, but you have proven that it was never designed for summit camping in poor weather. Much better suited for multi-day adventures where you can find a sheltered spot at the end of each day.

I’d initially planned to take the Allak on this trip but with my shoulder problem I decided to take the Durston to save a couple of kg. I’d had one on Helvellyn previously in 40 mph winds so knew it would be ok so long as the winds didn’t get crazy. I made sure it was pitched really well. We saw 40mph winds for a few hours and I measured 49mph gusts. I certainly pushed the tent towards the outside of its comfort zone, but at the end of the day it stood strong and it did well for what it is. It’s a good tent tho

Had my X-Mid 2 out in some windy weather in the Highlands a few weeks ago and to be fair all things considered it held up really well. Guy lines had to be really well pegged and pulled tight to allow the tent to hold its shape but with decent pegs and everything pulled tight it held up really well. Decent tent and thanks for more content Dave

I'm surprised how much water got in even given the conditions. I've never had anything like that amount. A couple of tips - try to pitch with the ridge line pointing into the wind to reduce the push in on the long side. Also clip a bit of cord from the side guy tabs to the clip that connects the side of the inner to the fly, that'll hold the door when the mid side is pegged. And, not boring at all for us. All the best, Roger

In the video I mistakenly said the damp was condensation. I slept with the inner door open all night so the tent was well ventilated. As I said the dampness was from the saturated air being blown into the tent for hours by the strong winds. Even though it wasn’t raining initially, when I was stood outside filming my clothes got wet from it. Cheers for the info about the tie back, Rogar. ATB 👍

The Durston stood up better than I expected, especially given you pitched it across the wind. I've never had mine close to 40mph winds so it's encouraging to see it stay up! I think the wet inner may be due to the fact it was face into the wind and that panel was getting blown right onto the inner at that side. But definitely pushing the Durston beyond its comfort zone.

Great to see the rough as well as the smooth. It's not always blue skies and araura ! I loved Red Screes. Great location, although I felt a cheat as it's so easy to get to!..... As far as tents go. I know the X is light, but I'm kinda amazed at the non flappy of my Storm Star. Looks a great tent for mid range or easy conditions maybe. But fair play taking it to the max. 40mph isn't yo be underestimated. . . ,👍

For conditions like that using a PHD sleeping back liner, expensive but worth it. Got it prmarily toprotect the foot of the sleeping bag which tends to touch the inner with my hillberg tents and also because water can drip inside from the inner when alot of condensation in the Soulo.

Nothing worse than spending the night in a cloud, with the vents on the doors I think that will be a early model xmid my vents are on the ends,it definitely helps pitching them end on tho so the big panel doesn't take all the gusts,I use a magnetic cable tie to hold the door back there stronger than the 1s on the tent.

Nothing worse than conditions like that😖 Glad to see your enjoying the tent 👍 Might regret selling you it to get the X dome. Not to confident it would handle those winds. Had the X mid up on Skye in 30mph winds and the ground was very rocky so wasn't the best pitch. But handled it fine apart from being a bit flapy and noisy due to the bad pitch. Enjoy 👍

Another good video Dave. The Xmid seemed to handle the weather well. You were on about bailing, I did last Saturday from Stone Arthur, got up there in thick clag, pitched the tent and I was about to put my gear in, but then thought better of it. I whipped the tent down at 3:55pm and legged it back down to the car before I lost the light. I was gutted that I bailed because there’s nowt worse but, I didn’t see the point of sitting in a tent in the clag with no views. Half a videos worth of footage down the pan. 👍

I love my X-Mid, but I'm a fairweather camper so it's strictly a summer tent. I've noticed that when there's a cold wind blowing that vent can make it a bit too chilly inside. I've used it on rainy nights, and sometimes the interior can get a bit damp (I also don't have the footprint), but nothing like the soaking that you encountered. I wonder if the strong wind was blowing moisture in through the vent.

The Durston isn’t designed for those winter conditions whilst structurally solid the tent as a shelter fails due to massive water vapour ingress soaking everything. Just shows the tent’s limitations. Keep up the informative content, cheers. 👍

Ive been in some strong winds in my X-mid and its held up well, its not designed for extreme winds, its more for multi day long distance walks, but with good pegs and all the guys out it stood its ground. I do have to point out to people/customers though....tents are NOT nuclear bunkers lol....even brick buildings get damaged in realy high winds, my bedroom on the 2nd floor of my house was shaking occasionally in the high winds a couple of nights ago lol. R.e: the doors, ive added a clip onto the end of the magnet strap so i can open the door with it pegged out (video on my channel) 👍🏻

Fair play for that camp Dave. Looked like a wild camp! But good to see the X-Mid hold up well to the winds. I've got the Durston (2p solid), which arrived two weeks ago. Where did you order from? I brought it directly from Durston, but mine looks a darker green. Apparently the new ones are a darker green, wandering if you've gone to a UK supplier which haven't changed to the newer version yet?

As I saw akto next to durston x mid, my own question is coming back to me. On a hill top and conditions like this should I take Akto or Staika with me? I think Staika might be warmer as thicker fabric, but Akto is lower so less wind will hit it and it's smaller so will warm up inside easier. I've been out with Akto in summer and with my mate in winter when I used Unna. With Staika I've been out in wind and also in winter with no wind. The question remains, what's your thoughts for camp like this what is more comfortable and secure Akto or Staika?

Haha. I think you’ve pretty much covered all bases there. I have an Allak and I absolutely love the space it gives on the long winter nights. The Akto has the advantage of being less than half the weight of the Staika, but much less space. It’s entirely up to you. Both tents would be fine if pitched well in those conditions. The key here is good pitching which I believe is absolutely essential for any tent in windy conditions. I’ve had my £110 Berghaus Brecon 2 in 50mph winds and it was fine with strong pitching and taking into account the wind direction with respect to the orientation of the tent. HTH 👍

@TheSoloSummiteer When I had Unna during winter kayaking in Latvia, I was absolutely freezing, obviously wrong sleeping bag and not winter matt. But I could feel the difference how thicker fabric retains heat. Also true is to avoid bad condensation hardcore winter campers advice to sleep with door open .... Double pole Unna is good middle way but I love my Staika, my first Hilleberg tent. thank you for comment, all I have to do now is just try Akto and Staika in same conditions. But I feel with long winter nights it's beneficial to have more space with bigger tent. I used Akto on Kayaking, and on Cycling Avenue de Verte London-Paris cycle. Love akto too. I bet I would find a use and would love Durton as well : )

@ wow. Fantastic 😎👍. I’m sure the Staika is awesome. An Allak on steroids 😁. I always have the door open if at all possible. On this occasion in the Durston, the issue wasn’t condensation as such, more about the totally saturated air as I was camped in a cloud and the wind blew the wet air through the vent and under the skirt. Although the tent was hanging on a bit I was really impressed with it and definitely like the tent. ⛺️👍

this was grim, takes the fun out of it, but could i ask when you have a good 4 season tent like the hilly why would you take a less worthy tent in winter, this did look like it would fail with the draft inside like that, but very entertaining keep up the good work :)

Its a good tent

A wet quilt could have been dangerous if you had to sleep another night :/ Was the akto that wet inside as well ? Thx!

Absolutely. It was only an hours walk back to the car in the morning so no problem. The Akto was drier due to the low down vent and the solid inner. Not sure if you’re read them but I’ve mentioned in previous comments that the water wasn’t condensation. It was wet air being blown directly into the tent by the strong winds. ATB

Cheers Paul 🙏🏻 In the video I mistakenly said the damp was condensation. I slept with the inner door open all night so the tent was well ventilated. As I said the dampness was from the saturated air being blown into the tent for hours by the strong winds. Even though it wasn’t raining initially, when I was stood outside filming even my clothes got wet from it.

Small tip when using X-Mid, bring extra Sea to Summit very packable towel to wipe wet floor and also consider buying tyvek from ebay as underfloor/groundsheet, helps quite a bit! I have learned the hard way on Great Glen Way when caught in a storm at night...I think the never version has better more waterpfloor floor but im not 100% sure. Mine is older version just like yours I think. Atb from Edinburgh.

I’m not advertising anything. I live in the real world. With 50mph gusting damp winds blowing in the top vent and through the mesh inner it’s bound to be wet. What tent wouldn’t be. It’s something that has to be dealt with. The advantage is a 1kg tent that stood strong in 50mph winds. Maybe next time, now I’m aware of it, I can do something different to combat it. I’m happy with the tent tho ⛺️👍

Hmm, not a great advert for the Durston really. I um'd and ah'd about lots of tents and ended up getting an Akto. I wanted a 'one tent to rule them all' that would be a good all rounder for most conditions you'd expect in the UK. Considered the Soulo but didn't fancy the weight. The lack of headroom can be a pain in the arse but it's a compromise I can live with given just how robust it is, yet airy enough when the warmer weather comes. Hard to beat really.

To be fair....there are loads of "great adverts" for the X-MID, I've used mine in snow, high winds etc and it's stood it's ground well. Every now and then you get atmospheric conditions that are extreme and condensation becomes a real problem, unfortunately tents are just that....tents, they can't be expected to perform like a nuclear bunker in every condition going, even houses get damaged/flooded in extreme weather (check out my videos on the Bridgewater canal breach, mother nature can be extremely devastating when she wants) 🙂

Everyone I know who buys an akto ends up selling it because of the low height and wide footprint. Whilst it’s not absolutely perfect - no tent is - the Soulo has many advantages over the akto for only a small increase in weight. Fewer people sell on the Soulo. Plenty of other options that isn’t Hilleberg too 👍

Dave, well done for sticking that one out. Out of interest, how many pegs and guy lines did you use to secure your X-mid in those conditions. It amused me to discover that Durston supply 8 pegs (if you buy their set) but you actually need 14 to peg it out fully.
