USE THE CAR CLIP ONS FOR THE VENTS - DRYER SHEETS ARE HUGE FIRE HAZARDS
@lindsayenrique8 жыл бұрын
Tip: If you're moving into an unfurnished place in college particularly, invest in minimal and light-weight furniture. A sound bed is inevitable but plastic drawers tucked away in your closet, a small desk made of light material and so on. I say this because you do not want to haul in and out heavy furniture especially if you're moving in and out year after year. Another thing to consider is a water heater if you live in the dorms. A $20 one will be good and it will be perfect, have a stash of coffee/tea/instant ramen/instant oatmeal so when you're to tired to head to the cafeteria or it's closed, there's food/drinks readily available inside your own dorm (don't have to sneak down to the community kitchen for food) TBH the minimalist lifestyle is so convenient for college students so try incorporation that kind of mindset when considering what to take to your dorm (be very utilitarian about it)

I'd like to add a quick warning for those of you who use the dryer sheet hack: I'm an RA, and when they're training us to look for pot users, they tell us to look for people who use dryer sheets in their vents to try and hide the smell. So, it works, but make sure you're careful.

Hack # 2 needs something besides just the mattress to hold it down. If the objects the pouch is holding is heavy, it might just slip out regardless.
@susiiib22868 жыл бұрын
You can just make the part that goes under the mattress longer if you're planning on putting heavier things in there
@isabelle9217 жыл бұрын
I made the flap thing that went under the mattress long enough to go across my mattress (not difficult in dorms ^_^) and made another one on the side. Sorry it's late but hope it helped!

kyliemou There are bedside storage units you can buy that velcro (like, hardcore velcro, not flimsy-Halloween-costume velcro) onto a bedrail or the framework of a bed and that have multiple pockets of different sizes, so you can have textbooks and your phone and pencils and stuff ready and out of the way, but still secure.

most colleges allow diffusers in the rooms and they work great my best friend had one and her room smelt amazing! Or there are these candles you can plug into the wall and it melts the wax but no fire. I can't remember the name of them but they're usually allowed
@teetube7 жыл бұрын
For anyone else who isn't allowed flames in their dorm, what I did was buy an electric wax burner. That way I could still burn lovely smelling "candles" (wax melts) without there being a fire hazard! :)

If your school is really strict on the candle rule just make sure to cut out the wick. We could have candles as long as the wicks were cut out

While Im at school, I use under the bed storage just like suggested, however sometimes that makes a room look cluttered especially when living with another person. What I found helped best to hide the clutter was to purchase some fabric and create a long bed skirt. I was able to use gray fleece and paper clips that then hooked on the mattress frame. Worked amazing for me and made me feel like people couldn't see everything I owned.

A lot of dorms allow you to have coffee pots. That serves as an excellent warming plate for a candle. Works best with smaller candles, though. You can also use scented oils in tissues or rags and stuff those in the vents or put them on the back of your fan. Not only will it trap dust to keep you from breathing it in, it'll also make the room smell great!

some colleges have dressers that come apart so you can stuff it under the bed which is super helpful when it comes to floor space so be sure to look at that! I needed floor space for stuff and putting it under my bed was amazing. Also there are these stackable plastic containers you can get at walmart and target and you can stack as many of them as you want on each other (it works amazing when used as a nightstand). Power strips are a must and so its not on the floor take a couple sticky strips that is safe for the walls and instead put them of the back of the strip and you can stick it to the wall (doesn't sound like it'd change that much but it was super helpful and just looked a little nice)!!

I used one of those mattress pockets, like the one you guys DIYed, but I had problems with the flap siding out from underneath my mattress. If you do want to put heavier things (like a laptop or a textbook) inside, you might want to add a couple more felt pieces and some velcro to the flap, so you can secure it to the frame or mattress supports on the bed (depending on how your bed/bedframe is configured). Also, you can buy a bedside tray, which is basically a small wire box on a C-clamp...you could probably DIY something like this too, but it might be more complicated. Hope this helps!

be careful with hack #5! improperly storing surge protectors or power strips can increase their risk of catching fire. storing them inside cardboard is an easy way to do this :-\. the power strip can get VERY hot when there's multiple appliances plugged in (especially laptops or cheap phone chargers!). I'm an EMT with fire safety training, and I have seen way too many homes burn to the ground due to improperly caring for/storing electricity products. be careful!

If your bed is one that can be lofted all the way and you're not afraid of heights (though, if it helps, this kind of bed will typically have bed rails so you don't roll completely off the bed), LOFT IT. You get so much more floor space, which can be used for literally anything. I myself have my dresser and a chair under there, but some of my friends have their desks under their beds and dressers elsewhere, or they have dresser and desk alike under their bed and more floorspace for humans to hang out in the actual dorm. Also, you know those plastic organizers that are usually just 2-4 drawers stacked on top of each other? Get some of those in varying sizes; they use space on the Z-axis which you won't ever use anyway and save space on the X and Y axes, which everyone uses always. I've got one on top of my dresser that's kind of a catch-all (accessories, games, and stuff I can't/don't want to put anywhere else), one under the sink for toiletries (bonus here is that this one only takes up half of the undersink space, leaving the other half for my roommate to do with what she pleases), and one in the closet for holding laundry stuff and extra towels and things. Speaking of laundry, a laundry backpack (like, a bag made specifically for carrying laundry on your back, though I suppose stuffing your laundry in your actual backpack could also work) is pretty handy in that it's easier to transport than a basket (especially through doors) and mine at least holds more laundry than a basket does and has an outside pocket for detergent/dryer sheets/etc. Storage ottomans are also a pretty good place to keep books/shoes/what have you, if you can't spare the desk space or floor space. I'm not talking a giant Hogwarts-trunk-sized treasure chest, although my roommate has one of those and it works pretty well for her. If you're like me and can't/don't want to expend floor space on that, just get a little one, like I did, and stick it in the corner. Then it can stay there and have stuff on top of it, or you can pull it out and rest your feet on it or straight-up sit on it. If you want a full-length mirror, I recommend hanging it on the back of a door to save space, as well as hanging necklaces/bracelets/what have you on Command hooks on the wall. That way, they're out of the way, you can still use them, and in the case of the necklaces, they're not all tangled together like they would be if you'd done what I foolishly did all through high school, which was keep them all in the same box. The wall's also a good place to hang hats. Plus, you can buy desk lamps that have organizational space in them for pencils and things--but if they have outlets or USB ports, check with your residence hall before buying one; mine doesn't allow them, because the outlets are open-source and can't be surge-protected, which means they're a fire hazard. Your hall might be more laid-back and let you use them if you just put tape on the outlets or something. Can't hurt to double-check. Last dorm hack: communicate with your roommate. Ask how much space they're willing to share and how much they want to themselves. Will the undersink space be split half-and-half? What about the closet? Or does one of you have less clothing or toiletry stuff than the other, and would that person be willing to give up space to the other? If one of you brings a minifridge and the other brings a microwave, are those things communal? You don't have to be your roommate's best friend, nor they, yours, but communication is the first (and often the only) step to avoiding being the roommate from hell who they'll tell stories about for years to come.
