For landing on Mars, if they weren't sure about retro-propulsion why on earth were they counting on that during a Space Shuttle RTLS abort scenario, which involved flying backwards at Mach 15?

RTLS was so risky, it pretty much involved saving the crew from certain death and giving them a slightly less certain death
