Thank you for playing with a pick and overdrive/distortion and not slap for 10 minutes

If you ARE interested in a bass mic, Sennheiser dropped the price on the e902 to half what I paid. I'm getting another so my friend who borrowed mine two years ago can go ahead and keep it. It has a fabulous tone on the kick, probably okay for bass. (I've been using a Heil PR-40.)

They don't sound identical to my ears. I prefer the e906 because it makes for an easier mixing session. It has a much smoother rolloff in the bottom end, resulting in just a tad more oompf around 100-150hz, which glues better with a low passed DI signal. It also has a much more usable peak around 4k as opposed to the (for bass) virtually useless 6k on an sm57. Depending on the amp I do need to tame that but that's what the useful dipswitch is for.

It depends on the style, but I don't like typical kick drum mics or typical guitar cab mics for bass cab mics. The types of mics that tend to work well for bass drum micing are high-quality large dynamics, with good low frequency response, but not too much mid scoop, or peaky presence click. Often mics that are good for floor tom are good for bass (Audix D4 is better than D6). Some I like are the Electro-voice RE-20, Sennheiser 421 U/N. Or the small Beyerdynamic M201 is great. And even the Shure SM7b can be decent if you get it in very close to the speaker cone, for proximity effect, or blend with bass DI signal. I only like D6 for subby dub-style bass lines - and don't really like D112 or 52A on bass at all, they're very coloured. Other mics that work well are classic large diagraphm condensors with smooth tone and good bass response: U47-style tube or U-47 FET mics are a good choice. Warm Audio, United Technology & Advanced Audio all do different flavours of U47 clone with prices ranging from 0.3k to 1k.

Sweet review, but couldn't you use a mic besides the one built into your camera? Sounds like you're in a well

Sennheiser e906 better AKG D112 for bass?

Yes.

D112 on bass guitar... gross. Why not use a Yamaha Subkick?! MD421, C414, RE20... all far better sounding for bass with a far flatter response giving a more accurate representation of your amp tone. Kick mics are made to catch fast transients... not solid notes.

The e906 seems to have smoother lows while the sm57 seems punchier
