Is Buying SMALL Gold Coins BETTER Than 1 Oz Gold Coins RIGHT NOW is a video interview with another one of my silver and gold dealers discussing the benefits of buying small gold coins. Buying 1 oz gold coins has its benefits, like less premiums. However, fractional gold bullion coins allow people to buy small gold coins more frequently. 1 oz gold like the gold eagle commands a heavy price for most people. Smaller gold coins like 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold are good alternatives. Fractional gold coins allows people to own some gold without having to break the bank trying to save enough money for a bigger purchase. The question is, which fractional gold coin is best to stack when gold stacking?

It's disturbing how many of the opinions in these comments appear to be predicated on some societal collapse that reduces us all to bartering being not only possible, but likely. I sincerely believe that many of you would make consistently better investment decisions by not overweighing such a tail risk. A few percent of your portfolio as precious metals is more than enough insurance against such a scenario. Beyond that it's time to admit that you simply like shiny things. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I like shiny things. For your own good though, please, do not lie to yourself.

Hey stormy I agree with most of what you said. Only thing I consider when buying fractional is future spot price. I know spot fluctuates but regardless I feel gold will have a higher low later on. Majority of people believe gold will be higher. Realistically can’t see gold at 10k like some people say. But I know it will be higher than what it is now. So if that’s the case then all the premiums we have paid for fractional will be eaten up and we may even make more money selling those instead of a full ounce in the future.

Agree in general but not with the idea that a 1/2 oz. gold coin is some sort of oddity. I started buying gold 1-oz. coins in late 2013. This was perfectly fine for a while but then I started thinking that having some gold in hand to make certain that I could pay my property taxes when they are due, regardless of the then current economic situation, would be good. I have no plan to pay these taxes in gold but to sell the gold and use whatever kind of money we have at that time. I'm also thinking along the lines of some sort of economic collapse, depression, or other fubar situation where it might be difficult to make change. Because of this, I started stacking some fractional gold coins. These are all 1/2 and 1/4 oz. coins. The 1/10 oz. gold coins have more premium than I want to pay. I did a back of the napkin calc on this and at that time a 1-oz. gold coin could be had in my hands for $2,000 delivered. But, if I were to buy 10 of the 1/10 oz. gold coins for that same oz. of gold, the price was close to $2,600 for that oz. That's a little on the steep side, IMO. I do have a pretty decent silver stack, though, and it should figure into all this as well.

To address the maple higher premium at the moment. Politics this past year here has been quite intense. Our PM acts more like a dictator than an elected official due to our left-wing media monoploly never challenging him. After the trucker crackdown, canadians went crazy for gold here. I called many dealers for weeks after that account freezing, and it was weeks delayed and all pre order. Canadians got spooked, and demand went crazy

The freezing of bank accounts was probably the best thing that could have been done to expose the main weakness in the banking system: government control. While this did not affect too many here in the US, you can bet that it got a lot of attention here anyway. Those who felt comfortable having a lot of money in the bank suddenly felt less comfortable about the prospect of losing access to their funds thanks to some government tiff over political issues. I do think that these things will backfire on those doing them but it may take some time before that becomes obvious.

Don't over look the 1/4 and 1/2 oz coins. The premium on them isn't bad. 20 Francs and Pesos are usually available for spot or close to spot. Last month I found a screaming deal on 1/10th oz Australian coins for $190 so I bought 10. It only ended up being $80 over spot for an oz which is what I could have gotten a 1oz maple for.

It's better if you don't mind paying over 3 grand an OZ . But if you don't have funds to buy a whole OZ it may be your only option if you want to own gold. Keep an eye on the market and buy when it's at the lowest . Prices are high now , but it's not sustainable. It makes no sense for world banks and countries to keep buying massive amounts of gold at historically high prices. Pretty counterproductive in the long run , especially if you're a bank .

I have avoided fractional gold because of the high premiums. I just got a 1/2 oz RCM proof coin at 4% over spot from apmex. I am not sure which one I will receive as it is one of those random offerings but it will be from the commemorative series from 1976-1986. I think I got good deal. I bought late at night. And early in the morning I went online to buy another and they were sold out.

Can you explain this to me? I'm Australian so the current spot price is $96 per gram So one oz is $2720 But online bullion dealers charge $3100 per oz Premium is basically over 10% when I've read its supposed to be 2.5% - 5% Why am I getting ripped off an extra $200+ per oz?
@Razur1
@Razur1 Жыл бұрын
I've also read that spot is $3000ish per oz but as I said 96 x 28.35 adds up to $2720ish so I don't get what the deal is with the extra $300, it doesn't add up lol. Spot being $3000 per oz adds up to coins being 5% over spot at $3100+ 5% is pretty nuts still, where's the 2% at lol help me understand the injustice I'm witnessing. Only buying sovereign coins, screw paying 28% capital gains tax lol 1 oz is the best size I've heard. I'm in the research phase

In these times I think most folks are just stacking what they can afford . For the seasoned stacker, lately for myself I’m getting more into the 1/4 oz size . It just feels right . But if I have the cash on hand I’m always going full ounce especially if I can get it 89 and 99 over spot . Luckily for me my LCS prorates all his fractional so 99 divided by what ever fractional I buy . Good video sir stormy !

I go for one ounce gold coins, 25 and 50 gram sectioned bars, and if there is a good deal, I'll buy fractional or pre '33...Fractional gold is now too expensive. I was buying 1/10th oz for $185 not three or four years ago. Too expensive to go low.

Maybe that's one of the issues with buying gold and silver? Today's price always seems high. lol I was buying 1-oz. gold coins back when spot was under $1200 an oz. That was not all that long ago, so today's prices around $2,000 an oz. do seem high... until they get to $3,000 an oz. and then they will seem cheap again. Wash, rinse, and repeat. The good news in all this is that this is *exactly* why we are buying gold, isn't it?

Much prefer the fractional over full ounce Gold pieces. May pay a little higher premium, but they are a lot easier to sell and very popular too. Grams, 1/20, 1/10 & 1/4 sell fast. While the 1/2 to full oz take more time before selling from what I've witnessed in online groups. Would have been neat to see what other Gold coins are selling for on Apmex of similar purity. Such as 1 oz .999 fine 24k Gold Britannia's, Philharmonic's, etc vs Maple's and Krugerand's vs AGE's. Just as a matter of personal preference, always pick up 24k. VT247

Perhaps as we see oil deals between Suadi, Russia, and China happen it weakens the USD as a reserve currency. 24k gold is easier to sell across borders without tax and maybe the mint will have some stigma along with the face value. I think the answer is pretty simple, dont buy fractional gold. the premiums are just too high. 1 oz gold coins are a way better option. if you ever need smaller amounts to cash in, thats what silver is for. You can easily get all smaller dollar denominations with silver. 1 silver, 5oz silver 10oz silver etc. I stack silver of all sizes and strictly 1oz or larger gold coins and bars. Even a 1/10th gold coin may have too much value to barter with, silver solves that.

If you're looking for fractional metals for direct barter, you should have mentioned gram bars! The Perth Mint and private mints make 1-, 5-, and 10-gram fractional bars. And you made no mention of the Valcambi Combibar breakable bar, which is a sheet of gold that breaks off into pieces The combibar comes in a 20-piece sheet of 20 1-gram pieces, or a 1-ounce sheet of 10 1/10 ounce pieces. If you can afford the one-ounce bar, you pay less than half the premium per 1/10 ounce vs. the Maple, and you get 10 all at once. No, it's not a sovereign coin, but if you're looking to save on premium, it's an option.
@EmpirePreciousMetals

You are correct, but bars tend to be not as sought after, which is why there’s less premium. I prefer to have items which will appeal to the majority.

@fazdoll thanks for reminding me about the Perth Mint gram bars. Just checked out the pricing on 1g and 5g bars and they are way cheaper per gram than a 1/10 or 1/4 oz coin. The 5g bar is not much over spot considering the small size. Plus those machined bars with the Kanagroo etching look sweet, no problem in moving those if you have to.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. From my point of view the 1/4 ounzes coins are the sweet spot. Also in the past the most used historical gold coins have a similar size. Sovereign = 0,24 ounze, vreneli, france, Lire,... =0,19 ounze, german empire =0,23 ounze. It is most likely that if we really use Gold coins for trading, that this size would be used often. Of course for big families and expensive Investments, the full ounzes would be better.

i usually get 1/4 krugers but in the dip i went with 1/2 since the spot was so far down and the premium so low that the difference between the 1/2 and some of the 1/4s i’ve purchased before only amounted to like $300, i don’t have any whole ounces right now , they really to me are the goldilocks of the gold coin, just the weight for its size and the value of what you are holding is a combination that is very satisfying, but for me right now that would be too long to wait and save for and i wouldn’t want to take that loss from premium by trading up fractionals, but ideally i would like to have 1 ounce of every denomination tucked away, then stack 1/4 all day long until a good dip comes along and go for 1/2 or a whole pie, but always always adding to the silver stacks what i can when i can. it’s always worth watching the ratio between the two for an opportunity there as well.
