I've just been through the 10 parts of the tutorial, and I feel comfortable in Luna now. Thanks a lot for this series, it's great! I have a $1 tip for mix engineers transitioning to Luna: write down every function you do use in your current DAW ("i do: crossfades, import existing tracks, create Auxes and Busses, add plugins, ....") . Really write down EVERYTHING, then go through these tutorials, and whenever Steve explains in Luna something you're going to use, then write down how to do it. You're making your own cheat sheet / manual. It's a super efficient way to build your skills, and to verify you know "enough" about Luna to actually start working.

It’s one thing to model electricity and transistors.. it’s another to try to recreate the way a capsule reacts to air moving through the air. I just don’t think it’s much more than an EQ on top of a decent mic. So I’d just say to go after some decent mics.. warm audio makes fantastic mics. Could probably snag their new c12 and fall in love. And be under budget. 😎👍🏻 Maybe even some coin left over to pick up another mic for a different purpose.

I was just in Australia! 🇦🇺 my people. Ehhh. Largely, screens have become a spec war. So - just find something that has at least 4K, and 60-120hz refresh rate. If you’re doing audio - screens aren’t really that important outside of preference. If you’re doing video, you can buy a calibration tool to make essentially any screen perfectly calibrated. Hi there I’m wondering if I can change the texture or tone of an instrument in Luna . I want to send the signal through the hardware and record audio back into luna. If I’m making sense
@ian20n6 ай бұрын
Hi Steve thank you so much for the information about this platform. I love it. I have a question, I use logic pro, and I've been using it for about 15 years, but I'm starting using Luna recently and right the moment I noticed that Luna offers more depth on the tracks by allowing to add more volume without distortion. Also you can push the plugins much more on Luna. Am I right?
@TheSteveKinney6 ай бұрын
Eeeehhhhh. There’s likely some perception happening here. Digital audio is digital audio. 0dbFs is 0dbFs. Regardless if your on pro tools, logic, Luna … However, I have noticed over the years how working in different daws, the way their meters readout leads to me setting gain structure differently - and mixing differently. So that is a thing. Then finally, if you’re using their Luna extensions, like tape and summing - both of those introduce harmonic distortion. Harmonic distortion adds tons of loudness. By 1. Adding more harmonics and overtones, and two, clipping off the peaks of your signal. Now … overdone and this is wildly obvious distortion.. tastefully done and you get a little extra loudness and the “sound of analogue” that is so famous. Hopefully that all makes sense. Cheers.
@ian20n6 ай бұрын
@@TheSteveKinney thank you. It makes perfect sense. However, If I try to add the same amount of distortion in both platform, in Luna it may sound a lot more clean and clear whereas in logic sound dirty and a little ugly to my taste. That's my opinion. What do you think? By the way, the summing in Luna is fantastic
@TheSteveKinney6 ай бұрын
@@ian20n yeah, I mean, I think the metering thing is what is kind of helping you get to where you are enjoying it. In logic, the meters have a weird non linear way of depicting levels, I don’t and never liked it. I get better mixes out of PT and Luna for sure. And the summing thing is cool. I like that it’s doing a little something and pushing my sound in a direction but not so colored that I have to think about it. It’s literally like working on a console. It’s almost like you don’t know it’s there until you have 50 tracks and you flip it off.

Both are gonna get the job done. Truly I’d say, test them both out if you can and choose one that fits your workflow. Personally- I find that logic can be a bit glitchy at times. And not very intuitive. And to a beginner / Luna can be a bit confusing. These are both professional applications for music production, there is a bit of a learning curve. Imho - Luna is the better option to learn. It’s closer to pro tools, which is the industry standard and can be helpful if you ever find yourself making music in a professional studio. Best, Steve

Thanks Steve, super clear and easy to follow. This is my 1st year trying to switch from PT to Luna so far the navigation and aesthetics are great. My beef is the monitoring. I've had support say to use Console tracking mode and other support say to turn it off. My issue is when I have a stereo pair of live mics, with them UN-armed they are still live unless I launch Console and mute them. That seems nuts. What do you do?
@TheSteveKinney3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! Thanks for the kind words. So this is where having "console tracking mode" turned off will make the difference. It's not really explained well - but there are really kind of 4 configurations... console tracking mode console tracking mode + ARM mode ARM Mode no ARM mode or console tracking mode Console tracking mode is useful when doing overdubs and vocals. It allows you to always hear yourself before and during playback, however... it takes over the whatever input source is in your session. This is a nuance that is important to note. When in luna tracking mode, aka no console tracking mode... each channels input signal chain is remembered, so once you turn the input monitoring on that track off and move to the next one... whatever was on that channels input signal path, is loaded back instantly.. even if physically - you haven't swapped mics around etc. so. real world example... you have an sm57 mic connected to channel on your Apollo... you have it point at your snare.. you monitor your snare through your luna session on the snare channel.. then you turn input monitoring on that track in luna off... jump to your guitar track.. and turn input monitoring on... all the sudden, your pre's and settings that were loaded with the snare track are now gone, and whatever was on that guitar track is now loaded. this is useful because you can now recall your session settings instantly. so if you need to redo a guitar pass later on ....you can... this is kind of the use case for Luna tracking. It's convenient, stores all your session data within the session. very useful, but not well explained. Console tracking, works like console does in PT... you have one or the other, mute your DAW signal, or your console signal. hope this makes sense! Cheers mate!
@Hearthmusic3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSteveKinney wow man.. I think I just got more from your 1 response than a month of UA support. They are great, but this really hit the nail on the head..thanks a bunch. I'm gonna look into your session packs and see if some of those might help me make the permanent switch to LUNA. I dig ProTools and used it for years but with an Apollo its annoying. Anyway. you know this.. Also interesting what you said about input monitoring being on and off. The only reason I even tried the console tracking mode was because I would record enable the track and the gain would completely disappear down to zero. (similar to if an automation setting was on). Anyway, now I know why:) wonder if there is a way to take an old track like that and get rid of its memory and set to default to start fresh? Or maybe simply delete it and create a new track..:) haha.. Anyway super helpful, and I now I'm going to dive into the rest of your LUNA videos. By the way, the one thing I miss about PT, was a simple reverb plugin. You recommend anything from UA? I tried the em250 and capital cities and I couldn't find a nice simple verb to use for an aux track. Just curious curious what you use.
@TheSteveKinney3 жыл бұрын
@@Hearthmusic Dude, thanks much for the kind words and show of support... first, worth mentioning my packs only work in console tracking mode, since Luna is still in development, they don't have channel presets yet - (as soon as they do - I'm going to update my packs for free as luna channel strip presets)... no telling though how long.. with regards to your reset track bit.. I BELIEVE if you turn console tracking on while the selected track is enable - it will clear it out if nothing is loaded in console... (I might have this backwards).. I just remember switching back n forth would sometimes make me have to start my signal chain over. Didn't pay it much attention, as I'm used to always building and rebuilding chains.. lol anyways... For monitoring verb, I really like pure plate. It's low DSP, sounds great. Finds it's way into my session mixes too for a plate sound. I'll also load the 224 a lot too. one of my favorite verb sounds, but it's definitely got a particular sound. so not right for every mix unless it's your creative choice kind of thing.. the other one I absolutely love is the spring sound from the Galaxy tape echo. Sounds SO realistic for a spring verb. and tons of vibe for a vintage dirty kind of sound. cheers mate!
