A video specifically on Logic Vs. Luna! After a three month transition from Logic to LUNA (after 15 years of using Logic Pro X) I wanted to make a video on why you might want to switch to LUNA. I don't think this DAW is right for everyone, but I think UAD is heading in the right direction! So far I am having so much fun using the LUNA recording system and I am really loving it. It is still young, but there are definitely a lot of benefits. Let me know if you have looked into LUNA at all!

Working mainly on audio track, with groups that have 3 to 8 close-harmonized voices, I simply cannot imagine to go back to manually cut and paste chunks of different takes, fading in and out each chunk and so on. The "comping takes" feature in Logic is a something that i simply cannot work without. For me it would mean to go back ten years.

For tracking, mixing and mastering, Luna just sounds incredibly good. For the creative stage, I prefer using Ableton Live. Think of Ableton or Logic as your jamming tool, and Luna as the Studio you go to with a finished track for mixing and mastering.

That's exactly how music software should be organized. One-stop DAWs are jack of all trades but definitely master of none. It's such a waste to wait for proper workflow features these apps parading as an all-in-one package. Most of them slowly but steadily become defocused from their main vision. They add new features instead of perfecting the ones already available - that's what the industry of the developer if it wants to keep up. It's nonsense. Let's go modular with audio apps.

Reaper has been sample rate agnostic since 2006 because like Luna the mixer is decoupled from the track engine, so they work independently to allow you to switch sampling rates on the fly without speed changes in the playback files. I wish all DAWs would move to this feature since it just makes working easier and I'm all for making sessions super easy!

@@coreystopperan9555 I disagree, LUNA is so encapsulated with the UAD system. Maybe the Native stuff will change things but it's still not changing the impedance of the interface. I'm straddling between Logic and LUNA. I am still recording, arranging, and editing in Logic, and then doing stem mixes in LUNA. I found it a struggle to get used to new editing commands in LUNA, but that just takes time and experience. I did invest in the API summing and a few other UA plugins, and now they have some of their plugins available by subscription that do not require the Apollo hardware. LUNA is getting better, but I don't get the feeling at all that UA is trying to compete with Logic. They probably consider Logic a "toy" and they are going after ProTools users, IMO. I would love to use LUNA 100%, but as your video points out very well, there are still some serious shortcomings for people using Logic to crossover completely. Nice job!

Just what I was looking for! I just stumbled upon your channel and this topic was top of mind, as I’m a 20+ year Logic guy. My strategy with UAD has been to divest of outboard gear/racks in favour of UAD emulations and the Unison pre-amps, so I was excited about Luna and tried it briefly. I find Logic is musician oriented, whereas Luna is studio oriented like ProTools. I used to record acoustic drums, guitars and amps, but with virtual instruments and samplers, acoustic recording is down to about 15%. It seems to depend on your genre focus. I see hip hop/pop/beats producers using Ableton and similarly creators using Logic. Luna is probably not for them. However, studio producers working with a variety of genres and artists might prefer Luna. After my trial, I realized I’d have to up my investment in UAD plugins, channel strips, etc. In a way, Luna is marketing strategy for UAD.

Is there a way to use more than one audio interface with Luna? For example, one UAD Luna compatible device plus a second USB audio interface? Or is it possible to sync Logic and Luna, so if for example, I had a UAD interface for all things Luna but when I need to track with my other interface I could record into Logic, then at some point just export from one daw and import to the other for final edit/mixing? I actually have a 3rd interface that is a monitor controller, so the monitor-outs from UAD and my other USB interface could easily connect to the monitor controller so monitoring would not be an issue at all in my setup.

You can feed other interfaces into your Apollo through the light pipe if your interface has that ability. I use to do it with my presonus digi max. Long time Logic user -- I began using Luna, but it's just not ready to replace Logic yet for me because I'm an ITB guy with massive VST instruments. But what Luna is great for is MIXING! The tape sims and summing is amazing. Nothing else can do that. It is really hard to go back to mixing on any other DAW after you get a Luna session with a tape sim on EVERY TRACK you want! Then add API and Neve summing (which are extensions, not plugins) and it is soooooooo sweet! And the workflow is smooth and easy. Two problems: the font is too damned small, and THERE IS NO UNDO HISTORY! Major flaw in a modern DAW. But there will be one added this year and it's not a deal breaker. Oh, and the Unison tracking is awesome for recording live instruments like you mentioned.

Thanks for the thought provoking comparison! There is no question for me. Look at what you get for a couple of hundred. Logic drummer included. My Superior Drums 3 was WAY more in price. the latency of 3rd party plugs is Awful, as I discovered last night with 'Archetype Gojira" and so little in the way of preferences to control such things. Also it crashes, as I found out last night. The lack of sensible saving protocols means overwriting files can be EASILY done, which is NEVER a good thing in a professional setup. for me it is a stable and now mature DAW vs a new still in Beta DAW.

I can't say that I have extensive experience with either one - my main DAW has been Reaper, Reason and Cubase for years - but I have full licenses to LUNA and Logic. What I can say is that I've tried to get into Logic so many times but I simply can't get the workflow to work - it's so strange, many people like it a lot, but I can't get almost a sound out of this DAW. But with LUNA it took me 10 minutes of orientation and I can imagine producing an album with this DAW. The only obvious thing that sticks out for me is the lack of decent comping but that will be surely added in the coming releases at some point. The workflow in LUNA with the console style mixer is just fantastic. I found it incredibly intuitive, musical and it assisted in making more creative choices - for example because of the console strip, I tried using a gate on a drum buss and the resulting was super interesting. I can imagine becoming a better musician with LUNA.

That ARM feature is just a marketing thing. In Logic you can record with zero latency when you have a apollo thru console. Its the same. And when you arm an instruments in Luna it just changes the buffersize to 128 in the background. You can find the information in the manuals on uad homepage. I left Logic and will be hard pressed to ever return. A few months ago I jumped in with PreSonus Studio One. Its a beast and has every single good point covered here between both Luna and Logic and then some. Some don’t care for Studio One’s high learning curve but if you stick with it you’ll be rewarded. Its definitely a bigger field these days. You’ve got Jacob Collier swearing by FL Studio, Dan Worrall swearing by Reaper and many of the old guard still in Pro Tools. Lots of options today. Thanks for the video. I just may have to try Luna for fun. 🤓

For rock/metal, the only amp sim you really need is the Friedman BE-100, the Suhr SE-100 or the Marshall 2203 amps. All of the others kinda suck. Anyways, you only need to buy one as you’re using it for monitoring.

I stick with ableton live + 3rd party plugins. I’ve tinkered with Luna but I find midi implementation quite clunky and it still has bugs with some plugins. Luna sounds great but without being able to hybrid mix with my analog gear it’s still a pie in the sky at the moment. Luna desperately needs something like the I/O plug-in Logic offers. Why UA hasn’t addressed this by now is honestly just plain silly. They lost a customer as I’ve since ditched my Apollo and focused on higher end conversion with the Lynx Aurora (N)

And also Luna comes packed with bugs and a lack of lot features you take for granted in others DAWs. Duplicating a Track, great - but then wait a couple of min for Luna to recalculate the plug-ins. Each time!? Loading a project can take more than 5 min. On a iMac 2020 i10 9core with 64 GB RAM. In other DAWs the Mac doesn’t even break out in sweat.

It's a bit _shady_ to say "you get what you pay for" regarding LogicPro. I remember when Logic (with their available sounds) cost over $1500!!! Now it costs $199 all-in and is _at least_ twice the application it was then! (I'd go so far to say the free Garage Band is more capable that 1999-era Logic.) Logic is inexpensive, not because it's second-rate, it's inexpensive because Apple is flush with money and can afford to give it away! It's still a world-beater application. You get *_far more_* than what you pay for! Please... Keep it real.
