I'm getting a lot of questions about why I wouldn't just boil the lake water. I would have in an emergency or survival situation, but all the runoff from the bird plops on the island would make any of that water taste terrible even after boiling it. In the middle of the lake, I would have easily scooped some up, but I had enough water to get me by without resorting to boiling that water which could be described as "thick".

Haha hell yeah my friend same here. I actually managed to do it a few times back in the day. I'd be out driving around with my friends with the camping gear in the truck (I used to camp A LOT), and we'd be out in the boonies somewhere surrounded by farmland and little patches of woods and such. On multiple occasions I would just slow down and cut the wheel suddenly, throw that bitch into 4WD and haul ass across a field or clearing on the side of the road in order to make it to the woods that looked appealing at a drive-by glance. We'd pull in, cover up the truck with some camo netting and surrounding foliage, and begin setting up a little spur-of-the-moment stealth camp site. We did that so many times and frankly I cannot believe we never got caught or anything. In hindsight it was typically just an excuse to drink underage/get rowdy totally unsupervised and a method with which to do so since we couldn't go to someone's house or something back then. Those excursions were also overwhelmingly *stupid* and more than a one may have been executed in a questionable area, likely private property and not exactly as stealthy as we may have imagined lol. In any case, it was always still a TON of fun and I wouldn't change it for anything. Those camps tended to be more fun and more memorable than any of the times we went to an actual campground...

Some of the nicer places that would be ideal for camping or even some towns can have very punative approaches to homelessness. I remember having to camp overnight on an island when I was about 10, so 1971. I don't remember what lake it was, other than near Edmonton, but my dad and I went fishing there in our fiberglass canoe. A storm blew up making the lake very ruff, so we put in to a small island. Other than our fishing tackle, the only thing else we had was a couple of old WW2 surplus ponchos. With the basic tools, we got a fire going in the rain with one poncho as a cover, and the other as a groundsheet, and cooked a couple of Pike on flattish pieces of wood we found. Rained all night, and we were both very cold, tired, and cranky by daybreak. In a light drizzle, we packed up our stuff back onto the canoe, then left, paddling around the other side of the island, WHERE WE DISCOVERED AN OLD, ABANDONED CABIN!!!! *FACEPALM*

Hard to say about the facepalm-worthiness. Depends on how hazardous further reconnoiter looked to your dad at the time. He took the shortest path to the win that he could see in front of him. I knew a lady who traveled a lot, but is a hoarder, and her car has a bit more stuff, but a lot of it is camping gear because she camp's when traveling. She has stuff happen to her all the time, and once ran over a mattress about 30 miles from work in the winter, and the parking security called up and asked her if she knew she had a mattress stuck under her car. She said no, but thought for awhile she heard a funny noise, but kept driving to get to work on time. Security had to jack up the car, and a lot of it melted and stuck to the exhaust, which took awhile to get it out. Took a long time to live that one down. The crazy thing about her, she learned to scooba dive in her 60's, and she will try anything, her step 2 is wine lol. God bless.

I have an inflatable boat similar to the one he has. They're surprisingly tough. I've dragged mine around and hit many rocks in the river and haven't had any problems.

At first I started watching these stealth camping videos thinking how ridiculous it is…then I watched one…then another…and another…now I just want Steve Wallis to be famous and keep doing what he loves. I’ve only watched about 6 of his videos so far, but I really enjoy the simplicity of everything and for some odd reason, whatever he makes to eat, makes me want to try it. This reminds me of the beginnings of survivorman

Damn man sounds like a back breaking job. I'm in the US, could never do that. Cheers mate, if you ever want to try something different than Whiskey - try Kratom! It's a natural leaf, its the only drug I consume. Feels like a natural opiate, tons of people who have bone issues - muscle aches - anxiety or just work fatigue love to drink it. I'll tell you I've had work days where my entire body aches, bones, muscles, and my mind - once I drink that kratom and it kicks in I feel soooooo much better and helps my body recover. Just something to think about! Have a good one mate

This is one of my favorite Camping With Steve's videos so I am rewatching it a couple years after the first time. The location makes it the best. The cooking mistakes make it so human. I would like to do this adventure myself, but don't have the guts or skill. It is good to just be an internet adventure.

Ya know, I come here for the Camping With Steve adventure, which is simply All Goodness, for me. Then, I linger for another hour and read the comments of humor, love, personal stories, private pain, appreciation and just simple enjoyment in a person none of us know …but boy, do we wish him well and the best of life. Peace and love to him, beautiful wife, Crazy Neighbor, and Gar(bage) the cat. Thanks for taking us camping with you every week, Steve!

Oh, Dude! You worry me! "hope the boat holds air, I left the inflator back at the car." Of course, with all those trees around, we can count on resourceful Steve to build a Huck Finn style raft to get back to the boat launch site. "Few little drips of water" in the collection pot that he sloshes out as he's showing it to us. This is great! Love you, man!

Next time you’re rowing a boat, turn the boat around and row with your back facing wherever you’re going, you’ll be able to put more force into the paddles by leaning forward and backward when you’re rowing. This also haves the added benefit of not tiring your arms as quickly.

Those rubber dinghy's are great, the separate inflatable sections will help keep it from sinking completely if it gets a hole in it. I was out on a lake once and the side wall got punctured by a sharp branch of a tree that had fallen into the water. The outer portion lost all its air but it had enough buoyancy to stay (mostly) above water. Was able to make it back to shore thanks to that thing.

Those ones are ok, the bigger ones with aluminum click together floors that can handle 20+ HP engines are heavy, big and cumbersome - far harder to move around and set up than advertised. Just get an aluminum boat with a trailer.
