TO HEARING PEOPLE If you're trying to learn ASL and you are not a very extortionate person, one of THE BEST things to do is take an acting class or two. It will help you TREMENDOUSLY in the expressions and comfort zone department.

I love when you guys discuss culture differences. I am a native English speaker but I have a degree in Latin, French, and Italian and work as a translator. My favorite part of all those studies has been culture. I started ASL lessons a few years ago and I feel like the culture conversation is always about adjusting to deaf culture. I love hearing Jenna's side of things as well and hearing about how deaf people also adjust to the hearing world. I recognize that our hearing privilege forces them to do that, but some of the smaller details are still interesting to me

Being in a Deaf/Hearing relationship myself, as well as it being long distance communication is KEY and VERY important! I loved this video (along with your others) because you guys really help me with advice for my relationship and how to keep it working! Another tip I have goes along with miscommunications. What I learned was, you can't be to quick to "jump the gun" and just assume what you saw, or hear, was right because sometimes it isn't. I am learning that when I see my boyfriend sign something and either I didn't understand or it seemed kind of rude or different than normal, I ask him and get clarity, instead of in the past when I would just get upset or mad right away. Also always be open, if you don't like the way of communication or how they are signing things or if they are to blunt LET THEM KNOW!!! Thank you so much for your videos I am a HUGE fan!!! You guys help me with my relationship and also my future career as an interpreter!! Can't wait to keep watching

I love this video! I am deaf in a relationship with a hearing dude, and we definitely compromised. He's been learning sign for 4 years now (has gotten REALLY good) and I've been doing a lot of kind of cued listening, writing, texting, etc, whatever to make it work. You guys are so right, it's all about compromise! Also, an app I love is Glide for video texting! It's great to get messages across and not worry about misreading them! :) Keep it up, love your videos and your Peanut! :)

[Jill] Thanks, Peanut loves being in our videos haha. Yes, we have Glide and use it sometimes if the internet signal is good. That's great that you and your partner are going strong. :)

Jill and Jenna, how does Jenna communicate with Jill's family assuming they are all hearing? My husband and I are newly married and my parents don't know much about deaf culture. Does Jill's family use sign language? would be an interesting video to discuss family dynamics.
@TheStews8 жыл бұрын
[Jill] I interpret for her. No one in my family knows sign language (well other than a letter or two).

would you and/or Jenna do storytimes? I think that would be interesting. but I don't want you guys to focus on negatives things (deaf discrimination, depression, or hearing/deaf miscommunication). I mean you could if you want but I'd like to hear more about your life and other positive true stories. thanks for reading my comment!

even in just a Deaf/Hearing friendship its important to know the person and how they communicate. like for me, when i text my friend who is Deaf sometimes it can be confusing because i dont really know how to take what shes saying. at the beginning of the friendship, texting was really difficult to communicate but as the years have gone by, ive picked up on what she means or just think "what would this look like or mean if she was signing instead of texting".
@TheStews8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you are right. Some of the tips can be applied to any type of relationship between Deaf people and hearing people(friendship, professional, etc.)

Hi as you know I'm in your group page. Sorry if I'm not active I've been studying ASL now for college. Right now I take ASL 1, I've been trying to practice facial expression when I sign, it's really hard for me. Any tips?
@TheStews8 жыл бұрын
[Jenna] I would say just keep practicing and watch some ASL videos by Deaf people and pay attention to their facial expressions. Think of it as expressing your tone when you sign. Remember the grammar rules and keep practicing.

Great video! I'm new to signing, excuse my ignorance but - why do some people mouth words when they sign and some people don't?
@TheStews8 жыл бұрын
[Jenna] Pure ASL doesn't need mouthing words so some Deaf people communicate that way. Others are like me who grew up in hearing/mainstreamed world, so we used both English and ASL to communicate and mouth words as a habit.

Not forget about hard of hearing. I experienced relationship with HOH and sometimes HOH person said to me that my English for written is low level and HOH has high level. I never like it. HOH person should learn or understand deaf culture enough but HOH is most use both hearing or deaf world. Not easy. For me myself DeafBlind and HOH in relationship wasn't easy. I can see HOH person wasn't patient for many reasons. Oh well.
@TheStews8 жыл бұрын
[Jenna] I'm sorry you experience that. You are right it can be different with HOH too and communication requires patience from everyone involved.

I tend to use Glide with my Deaf friends. However I also use text often as well. (I try not to bug the guy I have a huge crush on often) but as I know it's not rude to ask about signs of you don't know them (I'm fairly good with fingerspelling if I relax) but over text I tend to get ignored if I ask about a sign. Does it end up getting annoying after a certain point of someone asking you a sign? Whether fingerspelling in person or over text, or even written I guess.
@TheStews7 жыл бұрын
[Jenna] I think it varies, depending on individual's personality. Some people have more patience compared to others. Personally, I don't mind teach signs as long as that person make an effort to get to know me better and have conversations about things other than learning signs. I think it's important to develop relationship with someone while learning from that person.
