All great points. I would like to add, I love Interpreters like I love family. It's the most noble work/effort a d/Deafie can receive. With that, I am EXTREMELY fun and funny and I always knock Interpreters off their feet because I prefer non professional Interpreters from the standpoint of being genuinely silly with me. I'm silly and I want my Terps to feel welcome in joining me on my journey to insanely silly, fun, funny, laughable, humor riddled meetings especially at my Doctor's office because that crap is serious enough without being stuffy and staunch. HAVE FUN WITH YOUR TERP! They're people too and not JUST Gods.🥰🤣🤟

Yes, if my clients are goofy or silly I will follow along. It's alway good to follow the client's lead on the tone of the call in general. Glad to see that you are bringing some silliness and happiness. :)

I agree with most of these but I would add that most VRS companies offer quick support for when you feel like your skill level isn't sufficient. I have never been on a call that I felt unqualified for where I didn't have a team supporting me in under ten seconds.

I know this video is two years old but dang you are so right ! I went through a week training and almost meted my mind !! I knew by Tuesday it wasn’t for me but I wanted to finish the training mostly it was all the notes on all the things you have t do ( tag at the end voice mails 911 calls etc) o was taking notes and couldn’t bring them home to study bc private info but boy oh boy I am def and I’m person interpreter ( educational since 1992) I do hope this helps others curious about vrs I did get hired on as a community Interp for purple but rarely wor bc I have a day job grrrr but boy vrs is NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART if you are still one I applaud you!!! Not sure you will see this I was scrolling through my subscriptions on KZbin and caught this little Vlog take care!!

You make some great points. 😎🙌🏼. I actually like to encourage certain new interpreters to do VRS but minimally - maybe 2-3 shifts per week and 2-3 hours each shift. I think being introduced to all of the different communication settings and all the different types of language from all around the country are such an asset to emerging interpreting skills. I also think you’re able to learn really interesting ways to control the flow of communication when you’re working with 2 or more people who aren’t in the same room together and that skill has applicable parallels to in person interpreting as well. Plus you have ability to team with people at the push of a button and get that support when you feel like you are struggling. Conversely, you’re not able to have that same support when you’re out there in the community predominately working alone with no oversight.

Congrats to the ones that's part of VRS Interpreter...my parents are hearing impaired i have been knowing sign language all my life i have already did my application but hopefully everything works out! Stay Strong and Stay Positive never give up on something that you love to do...especially if that's your passion

I recently joined an agency who also does VRS, but as a Community interpreter, last month, and they asked me if I would consider doing VRS! I barley graduated and definitely don’t have enough experience! I’m definitely interested since it’s more reliable than freelance but in my gut I have a bad feeling! Thank you for this video!

Thank you for the video. I’m curious your take on the n word in discussions about interpreting: Black interpreters and deaf people encouraging non-Black interpreters to sign “n word” instead of signing the word. I don’t know how often that comes up on VRS but maybe it’s an important distinction to make if it’s different than an interpreter feeling uncomfortable saying curse words or sexual things. As a LGBTQIA+ identified person what is your take on signing slurs (instead of substituting f word or t word or using a non slur word substitution etc) against the LGBTQIA+ community in or out of the VRS setting?

Oh, good... thank you.🤣 As a Deafie, I have learned if a Deafie wants to use or typically uses a type of word or language practice, we might consider not expecting a Terp to follow us down that particular rabbit hole by taking 5 to 10 minutes before your session to feel each other out. This allows each personality to get acquainted. As that occurs, simply ask your Terp, "Are there certain language practices that conflict with your constitution (inner core)?" They'll either say, "No. I'll follow you." OR, they'll ask you what you have in mind. Be honest and finger spell your ass off or pile on the CLs. Let them know you're a skilled potty mouth or you might have Asperger's, Tourette's, Depression or you're BiPolar. It doesn't HAVE to mean you're a butthole. That's all I wanted to say. Build a relationship with your Terp. Team work makes the dream work.❤🤟🙏

I've seen MANY videos saying DO NOT sign the full word, but to say "they signed the full 'n-word'"

I have looked a lot into this. First... in my past, I was always told, ie my ITP and other places, to say/sign everything that is said/signed.... even words like the n-word. I was never told any different. Now that I have looked into it more I have seen that I was told wrong and now would not say/sign things like the n-word. I would sign "n-word" and clarify full word or -a or something like that. Yes, it's very different than curse words. I don't put the f or t words on the same level as the n-word, but still if you are not LBGTQIA+ you should avoid the words. Again, all this depends on the client. I have had a client tell me to say specific words in the past. They clarified to the audience that they were saying the word and not me. Without client's consent, I would not say/sign the words.

I'm not sure that those are accurate reasons because all of those reasons can happen anywhere you interpret. Like cursing for example doesn't matter where you work, you have to relay what the consumer is saying. Idk just from what I've learned thus far. I mean they do work in VRS however, I feel as though the reasons given were for any job you do as an interpreter.

Yes, and no. Yes, the cursing example is true for all interpretation. The slow signing part may not be for all. There are many situations where you can sign much slower or have a longer lag and be perfectly fine. VRS not always (although it can happen sometimes... like in announced calls).

VRS is paid only for the minutes you are actually interpreting. VRS has never taught me to rush. Your instinct you felt it wasnt the right thing to think or say. Trust your instinct . Hast makes mistakes

Ronan Shannon says white interpreters should not translate the full N-word and other such slurs, and that this is pretty much consensus among black people. I’m neither black, Deaf, nor an interpreter, so I can’t really comment, though.
