I haven't reached advanced yet (so I can't keep up with your natural speed), but I wanted to say you are very clear with both your hands and face and it's lovely.

I just discovered your instagram, and through that your channel. I love how you teach to a more advanced audience! There are lots of resources for beginning ASL online, but less for students who are further along. I appreciate how the captions are not automatically included, because I watched the video twice, once without and once with captions. Again, thank you so much, I look forward to more!

I really appreciate that you don't add audio to your videos! I notice that when people speak and sign, I absorb less, and I'm not truly forced to work on my receptive skills

One of the best tips I learned (that also includes a bit of everything you showed in the video) is to focus on the context. So include the shape of the word, focusing on the overall size etc, but focus on what they *could* be spelling. It's similar to the flash cards you used :) I discovered this kind of on my own during ASL class, when the teacher spelled bratwurst. Also, the spelling of that word is weird anyway lol. We were learning about signs for meat in that section of the class, thats where the context comes in. He spelled it really fast, and waited to see if anyone understood. I forgot the sign for it, if there even is one lol, and just said, "wait, is it the thing that's like a hotdog?" Everyone was super surprised apparently haha. It was based on two main tips I learned; trying to catch the whole word instead of individual letters, and ✨️context✨️ Context is so important in ASL, and I'd imagine any other language. Anyway that's something I thought I'd share :P

I’m honestly impressed with my ability to follow your finger spelling and your signing in general (I turned captions off to practice). Definitely missed things here and there, but still proud 🥲 your finger spelling and signing is so clear, you make it easy!

Thank you so much! Understanding finger spelling has been a huge problem for me for years! I always have trouble understanding what people are spelling to me and I have to ask them to go so slow. Just like when I can't hear what somebody is saying and I repeat back what I think they said, signing back what I think they spelled is such a huge improvement over asking them to sign it again. Thank you so much for this video.

Oh! This is so helpful... if I could read it! 🤣 I can spell that fast correctly, but reading someone else, that’s another story. I studied vocal and instrumental music all of my life. I can read German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, all correctly. I couldn’t tell you a single word of what I am saying! (You have to learn to do this for sight reading any language that is put in front of you.) WHAT AM I GOING TO DO?! I feel so stupid!

I liked this video for having such good examples and resources but tbh I almost cried trying to find the shapes of the words. I naturally speak very fast and read pretty quick but it's hard to see a word in someones hand when you're taught to look at their face.

Ahhhhh I really want to get better at ASL, but I've learned the basics and intermediate seems to hard for me. Maybe I didn't learn the right basics, but it always feels like I never have the right words to have a conversation and it's frustrating. I just don't know where to go from here

Hi JLS! I don't really understand the part about looking at the shape instead of letters??? I don't think I've ever done that... I literally read letter by letter...? Lol. Or if I missed a letter I just filled in a gap to figure out a word.
@JeremyLeeStone
@JeremyLeeStone 4 жыл бұрын
This will help everyone not to watch the hand of the signer, but instead focus on the face, where mouthing and other grammatical information might help with decoding. Especially reading fingerspelling from angles than face-to-face. Conversation can happen in variety of group settings, so receivers may need to decode from different perspectives, depending on where they standing or sitting in a group.

Asking to spell again is Bad? I mean we are trying to understand eachother, If I asked somebody hearing to repeat themselves It wouldn't be rude asking one time, Why is it always something rude with asl Perhaps i'm missing something but i'd rather ask to sign again slower There are also emergency situations and as a new signer, I wouldn't think asking to sign again is a big deal ??????????! Tone in this text is not angry or stern, It is just wonder and question. Tone is misunderstood in text so this is just clarification

Can you post more videos like this, but don't tell us the words until the end of the video? It's very easy for my brain to cheat and just look for the word in English if I didn't process it right away.

Please record your videos waist up. Most curriculum have this for ASL. Signs are waist up; Examples: 'China', 'Pants'... Also, Sorry, do check your letter 'e' and make sure the fingers touch the thumb for clearer signing reception. Thank you

This is rhe dumbest way to teach, should I watch the hands or read the CC. Lol. My advice is that the best way to learn is to speak and sign so we can communicate with other and they don't feel left out.
