Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.

The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

Lyrics:
In one single moment your whole life can turn around
I stand there for a minute, staring straight into the ground
Looking to the left slightly, then looking back down
The world feels like it's caved in proper, sorry frown
Please let me show you how we could only just be for us
I can change and I can grow, or we could adjust
The wicked thing about us is we always have trust
We can even have an open relationship if you must
I look at her, she stares almost straight back at me
But her eyes glaze over like she's looking straight through me
Then her eyes must have closed for what seems an eternity
When they open up, she's looking down at her feet
Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
So then I move my hand up from down by my side
Shaking, my life is crashing before my eyes
I turn the palm of my hand up to face the skies
Touch the bottom of her chin and let out a sigh
'Cause I can't imagine my life without you and me
There's things I can't imagine doing, things I can't imagine seeing
It weren't suppose to be easy, surely
Please, please, I beg you, please
She brings her hand up towards where my hands rested
She wraps her fingers 'round mine with the softness she's blessed with
She peels away my fingers, looks at me and then gestures
By pushing my hand away to my chest, from hers
Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
And I'm just standing there
I can't say a word, 'cause everything's just gone
I've got nothing, absolutely nothing
Trying to pull her close out of bare desperation
Put my arms around her, trying to change what she's saying
Pull my head level with hers, so she might engage and
Look into her eyes to make her listen again
I'm not gonna fucking just fucking leave it all now
'Cause you said it'd be forever and that was your vow
And you're gonna let our things simply crash and fall down?
You're well out of order now, this is well out of town
She pulls away my arms that tightly clamp around her waist
Gently pushes me back as she looks at me straight
Turns around so she's now got her back to my face
Takes one step forward, looks back, and then walks away
Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over
I know in the past I've found it hard to say
Telling you things but not telling straight
But the more I pull on your hand and say
The more you pull away
Dry your eyes, mate
I know it's hard to take but her mind has been made up
There's plenty more fish in the sea
Dry your eyes, mate
I know you want to make her see how much this pain hurts
But you've got to walk away now, it's over

My missus walked out on me suddenly after 6 years. Went into complete shock. Ended up in a supermarket where this was playing and it took every ounce of strength I had not to just completely dissolve in that shop as the reality suddenly hit me like a train. Chin up everybody, it gets better, slowly but it does.

Feel you bro. After 6 years our relationship ended. It was shock for me. first two months for me was mix of sadness anger and madness. I thought about her every day...at night she was in my dreams. Its half year since we broke up. now all i feel is loneliness and i miss her a bit. I finally understood that our relationship was over. I accepted it but it was very very hard (harder than you think bro). now it's getting better day by day. The only thing I'm afraid of is that this was my only chance in my life for such beautiful feelings and love. I'm so afraid of loneliness. she was my soul mate and best friend through thick and thin. Thank you. ...I feel little tear under eye while writing this comment 🙁 I wish everyone who reads this all the best. I hope you doing good brothers. keep your head up and take small steps forward because time is your best friend now 👊🏼

This song came out when I was 19 and going through a nasty breakup with the father of my unborn child. He didn’t want us anymore. I would cry for days, listening to this over and over again. Thought my life was over. My daughters now 15, I’m married to an amazing man and can listen to this with a smile on my face knowing things got better.

This is so accurate because when relationships end its not like in a movie; you don't reflect on the relationship by starring off a cliff at the ocean or whilst standing atop a skyscraper overlooking a metropolitan skyline. You reflect on the relationship and the sorrow when doing the most mundane things - sat in a laundrette, sat in a takeaway, sat at a bus stop, buying milk from the local shop etc

Ive just listened to this song 6 times on repeat, today's the first time ive heard it. I was a child of the stolen generations in Australia. My adopted father was a good man but I hardly know him as he was rarely home due to his job. My adopted mother was a monster and her indifference to me as an infant solidified into pure hatred before I was a teen. Despite this I was born with an overwhelming sense of empathy for all living beings but as I tried to navigate through an increasingly cold and cruel world i steadily became more jaded, less caring and more judgemental. There has been some great times in my life, I've traveled all over this beautiful planet and experienced things many people only dream of but I still haven't been able to form any long term, meaningful relationships. Ive driven away every girl ive loved and nearly all of the people i called friends. 8 yrs ago I started doing some volunteer work with dogs at a shelter in Sydney and it was a revelation, the single most rewarding experience in my life and it continues to be just amazing. I lead a fairly solitary life now, i live alone and probably will until I die (im 52 now) but I find solace in knowledge that I have helped rehome, rehabilitate, comfort and befriend hundreds of abused, neglected and unwanted dogs. After seeing this music video, a man falling to pieces yet his dog is by his side in every shot, well, i just , um, just started writing. Thanks for reading my story, and please everyone, try to find that empathy, for loved ones and strangers alike. Be kind to one another and please please please be kind to your pets, they are truly innocent and perhaps the greatest source of unconditional love you may ever know. Peace

Even the filming of this song is incredible. So much meaning in it. The fact you see no one else in the video apart from Mike and his dog, shows how internalised and alone you can become when break ups happen. The fact he's doing completely mundane, everyday things ties so well with his style and lyrics; in particular this song, because these situations stick with you mostly through the boring, mundane parts of life.

After my husbands funeral, I ended up back at my parents with our baby, couldn't face going to our home. We had my husbands funeral, then we went home to my parents, I had done everything that I was supposed to do, arranged the funeral, what clothes he would wear, notified everyone, the songs, the words, as if I knew what words then!! This song has always been with me. How can you mend a broken heart... You can't! What makes the world go round!

First heard the song in 2004, whilst struggling to come to terms with the sudden breakdown of a relationship. Some of the moments in the song had felt breathtakingly close, but the last line truly helped me find some closure. 18 years later, I just got today to the point where I'm ready to draw a line behind me after a recent break up and move on. And the song comes back to mind. Lyrics, delivery, the violin in the background. It's not aged a bit and remains a masterpiece but also feels like talking to a friend...
