I would say that Poland in a lot of ways had started to catch up to Western Europe exactly in 13th century. Gothic architecture came to Poland quite fast for the time simiraly with Cistercian order which played a key role in advancing Polish countryside with new technologies and three-field system. Many cities and villages were located this century including Cracow, Wrocław, Gdańsk or Poznań. Even Hospitallers or Templars establish their outposts. Though Poland was kind of an outskirt of Latin West (part of it only since 10th century; part of the so called "Young Europe" alongside e.g. Bohemia, Hungary or Scandinavia) we still manage to contribute to 13th century intellectual life with figures such as Wincenty Kadłubek, Iwo Odrowąż, Benedict of Poland, Martin of Opawa, Vitello (Witelon), Saint Hyacinth Odrowąż, Nicholas of Poland, or Henry IV Probus.

Aside from the lifespan changes I’ve undergone since last considering this century - an experience I date to about the 1980s - the collapse of the middle class into the concentration of money and power, followed by the populist resurgence and Covid pandemic - all that makes this century feel more relevant and less evil than it seemed back then. I especially appreciate his point that the stable advantage of some groups - the guilds and clerks in his case, parallel to the unions and salaryfolk in ours - coexists with the disadvantage of others (in his case, my own group, the Radical Refornation), and yet still does good for awhile. We now know that stability based on repression cannot endure forever, so the glory he purports to celebrate gave way to chaos and war. Plus, Plague. Let’s see if we come out of our twelfth century replay better than his world came out of the first one.

This is more the 14th c., the 20th century is more comparable to the 13th IMO.

This is brilliant. Those who complain about adverts, should note that those annoying interuptions slack off as the narration continues. Those who don't have the patience to listen past them, and can't take the trouble to lift a little finger to click the skip button, most probably will gain nothing from this great book.

a distant mirror is bad history as a historian that studies the 14th century I wish I could recommend the book. Its good writing but bad history with political motivation

What's political about it? I personally love histories that try to bring you into the conciousness of the period without the anachronisms.

It was great because it was the Medieval Warm Period! Nice weather, lots of food, few plagues, extensive travel and trade and sharing of knowledge around the world! Bring on the global warming!
@louishennick68833 ай бұрын
The 13th century was definitely not warmer than it is now. 2023 was the warmest in 120,00 years. It’s not getting any cooler. CO2 level higher than a million years ago which means heat that comes in does not leave. Saying to bring on the warming is like proposing to burn down your house because you think it’s too cold inside.
