Interesting as far as it goes, but what about the other ranks, infantry and archers, etc., who made up the bulk of these armies? How were they recruited, paid, etc.?

The actual 'knights' who would be involved in battle, in peacetime were they competant administrators, or were they the lord's dumbest yet muscular son? (You know a second son you dont need)I think its odd the elite of society putting themself in mortal danger in every battle.

I'm not sure if I'd call the mercenaries of the barbant the crack troops of the middle ages, they where more likely their to bulk out the army alongside a more general peasent levy. Also castle guard makes sense considering the threat of piracy, local fueds and banditry. depending on the area those knights could be very busy.
