The way I see it, Tales of The Jedi just gave context to Dooku's fall. As with many Fallen Jedi before him, he started flirting with The Dark Side with the purest of intentions. But, as The Darkside always does, he was gradually corrupted and twisted until he became the very thing he originally set out to stop. Vader was a prisioner of fate from the begining of his life to the end but Dooku was a prime example of "The Road to Hell is Paved with Good Intentions."

That context was there for decades in the EU comics. But I'm glad to see most of the new fans will finally understand his character a bit more. Albeit a more toned down version. Also, allow me to praise you for acknowledging that he was evil. I'm so tired of many fans trying to pretend that villains are not villains simply because they had good intentions at some point. People need to remember that good guys and bad guys is the status quo, not all characters are in the middle.

We also can't forget the vision that Dooku had for the Empire once the war was over. In the Revenge of the Sith novelization, he muses over the state the galaxy will be in once he and Sidious have brought the Empire into being. By that point, Dooku had become a believer in the concept of human high culture and supremacy and wished to see the other races of the galaxy stripped of everything of value, and that they existed as nothing more than slaves to the new Empire, and the Sith Army that he intended to build.

@@boomer310 are you certain about that? The hatred that Dooku held for most as a Sith, and the twisting of his original ideas of a galaxy free from corruption can easily be twisted by the Dark Side. Dooku’s manipulation of prominent alien species was a direct effort on both his and Palpatine’s part to demonise aliens as the face of separatism and make High Human Culture much easier to accept. His hatred of Grievous and even his willingness and ruthlessness in attempting to destroy Ventress (a near human) show that he was entirely in line with the bigotry that he had developed while having been a Sith Lord and it showed the characteristic hatred, cruelty and short-sightedness that the Dark Side brought about to everyone, including Palpatine, who hated everyone and arrogantly held everyone in contempt, being unable to see his own downfall.

I think this is a good video to remind everyone of what Dooku is responsible for. While yes the character should be reevaluated in the wake of Tales of the Jedi, we can't forget that he is ultimately a villain of the franchise. Dooku is not a good person, but you can sympathize with how his journey through life led him to become Darth Tyranus.

@colresswesker8912
@colresswesker8912 Жыл бұрын
@@ketamineheadyoda2248 I agree. When I say sympathize, I mean that the Republic was a flawed system and its dynamic with the Jedi Order meant that Dooku very rarely felt like he could make a lasting difference as a Jedi. That feeling is something that a lot of people can relate to in their own careers today. However, his frustrations and concerns turned into something worse. The scene where Yaddle tries to reason with Dooku is actually very important. Were Dooku still reasonable, he would have understood that he had gone too far and returned to the light, even if it meant his imprisonment or exile. Dooku of course does not do this, revealing he is too far gone. That being said, I think Yaddle is really important to that final episode as a foil to Dooku. Yaddle is proof, or at least the implication, that the Order could be salvaged, with her interpretation of the events of the Phantom Menace leading her to realize that Dooku's fears were justified, and that Qui Gon's death could have easily been avoided. She leaves the council in protest of these mistakes. Were it not for her death, her presence in the order may have continued to push her peers into realizing they had lost their way. She also recognizes that Dooku is deeply hurt, and tries to reach out to save him. Unfortunately, much like the audience, Yaddle was surprised to learn that Dooku had long since made the decision to join the Sith.

There is the thought that of Sidious' apprentices Dooku was by far the most useful and the closest thing to a peer Sidious had. Maul and Vader were never treated with the level of respect, or given the responsibility, that Sidious gave Dooku. Sidious always had to kill Dooku because he was way too much of a threat to him both politically and as a Force user. But Vader and Maul? Zero chance of them ever becoming peers or rivals beyond the immediate threat, which was minimal to be honest. Maul was too weak, and Vader too crippled. Sidious never truly feared either... but he DID fear Dooku's Force abilities to an extent.

@@ketamineheadyoda2248 In a traditinal sense he is right. The ancient Sith Master and Apprentice dynamic was more closer to what Sidious and Dooku had rather than Sidious and Vader/Maul. Vader and Maul were treated more as enforcers by Sidious, not partners. Only pre-Mustafar Vader was seen as a true student and peer in training by Sidious. Afterward, Sidious' use for Vader was limited. Contrast this with how Sidious treated Dooku. Sidious only ever touched Dooku once with the Force. In contrast he routinely punished Maul and even Vader with the Force. Dooku was treated with far more respect, and given far more of an equal role in the Grand Plan. Firstly, Maul was still at a very very early stage in his Sith Apprenticeship, and was still learning from Darth Sidious in Episode 1, however Sidious did consider Maul to be a true apprentice and his successor, but this was literally cut short by Kenobi. Regarding Vader, again Sidious clearly intended to make Vader his successor, but once again Kenobi thwarted his plans by crippling Vader, so Sidious at that point just accepted that no one can truly succeed him, and therefore should not threat Vader with respect.

He probably did more things between Episode 1 and 2 that just aren't mentioned. He had planted a bomb which crippled Grievous then gave him a new robot body and made him his slave. That's right, Dooku is the reason Grievous is a cyborg but the General doesn't even know. As TCW showed you, he killed a bunch of political figures and leaders who refused to join him. And that's just what we saw when he ran into Obi Wan, Anakin, Yoda, Padme, imagine how many other political leaders he killed or attempted to kill when they weren't Around. He used Ventress as an assassin so she probably killed plenty of political leaders herself. He might have even killed CIS deviants, deserters, and defectors between Episode 1 and 3. Obviously after Maul "died" Dooku was the one who would be sent to kill people who wanted to leak information. We know Rael Averross declined to accept Dooku's invitation after the events of Master & Apprentice. But, Averross was very close to saying yes. It is hard to see how Averross would have stayed with the Jedi after Qui-Gon's death. Dooku might have attracted a number of Jedi to him. Yaddle herself was already doubting the Council before TPM. Dooku indirectly caused much suffering as well as killing others personally While Vader directly and indirectly killed countless people Dooku caused a war in her not only killer d many, but created a False revolutionary movement that made many victims of Republic reprisals and the future Empire, had droid Armies and minions killed many in his name, and created his successor Vader that killed far more after him The difference is Dooku did all this for the cause to create a utopian Empire, where corruption is eradicated and progress is lead by enlightened Force Wielders as the Sith Palpatine stole that dream and simply made an autocratic Empire for the sake of ruling forever and have Vader as enforcer Vader may have intended to spread order, but simply to impose the current regime, rather than promote the common good like Dooku dreamed

Dooku defenetly still is one of the most sympathetic Sith Lords or “evil” characters today, his intentions were good in some way but the exectution was not (something that I really love about Avatar Legends of Korra villains, yes they are evil and do bad things but they truely want it for “greater good” even if the execution of their plans are defenetly not the best way, they are not evil becose they like it or becose they want more power they just chose bad way of doing what is right). Dooku started as someone who wanted a better galaxy without corruption but of course nobody is imune to the dark side and what Once was sacrifice for greater good turned into evil very quickly and although he still wasn’t corupted by the dark side as much as other Sith Lords he still lost his noble pure intentions for the Sith Grand plan.

Okay, I’m definitely on the Republic’s side, the Jedi’s side, and most importantly the Clone Trooper side, but I have to say, Dooku feels more like a Dark Jedi than a Sith. Hell, the Inquisitors feel more like Sith than Dooku. I’m always telling other folks about how Dooku while good at first, became evil and it’s the same thing with the CIS, sometimes I think I’m the one who needs these reminders. We always see the Sith making empires to conquer the galaxy, even in Legends. Yet the CIS would be a strange Sith Empire if Dooku made it one and he just doesn’t seem like a Sith Emperor, hell he sometimes doesn’t seem like a Sith Lord. Now that I think about it, everything I just typed makes Dooku even scarier. With other Sith, you can tell even from a glance they are Sith, that they are evil. Dooku on the other hand just doesn’t feel like the same thing. Hell, each Sith has an evil deed we can associate with them. Maul killed Qui-Gon and took over Mandalore. Vader wiped out the Jedi Temple. Palpatine committed Order 66 and ruled the galaxy. Dooku? He made a separatist movement. It just doesn’t hit the same. And yet he’s just as evil as these other guys. Dooku seems more like an old politician than some guy who delves into dark stuff. Even his crimes seem more like the stuff of a shady and immoral politician than a Sith. It goes to show that there isn’t exactly a type for who can become a Sith.

Necessary sacrafices must be made. About slaves for the war efforts: Once he would become the (co-)leader of the entire Galaxy post-war he could put a stop to all further slavery, meaning that him using slave trade in order to acheive this goal (which, mind you, slavery was happening anyway wether he would condone it or not, in the midst of the galactic civil war, he would scarcely have reasources to put a full stop to it). About the Death Star: If weapons of mass destruction can be made, then it is just generally, strategically more sound to be the first to make them. Supposedly, rivals are going to make their own anyway, so it is a necessary self-defence measure.

While Dooku was definitely corrupted by the dark side in the end - we have to remember how much of this material either came out of the clone wars movie/show - or canon that largely was inspired from it. And while the Clone Wars did an amazing job in portraying many characters - Dooku was not one of them. They needed a clear villain - and so Dooku became a standard, grey (and not in the moral sense) nasty fellow. The transition is easy to see - in AOTC he's sinister - but conflicted. You can see his convictions - especially when taking into account the deleted scenes. In the crawl for Revenge of the Sith - the line 'heroes on both sides' - is clearly meant to allude to Dooku. Dooku certainly allowed Sidious to corrupt his intentions and use him - but I really don't agree with how Clone Wars and subsequent entries have often treated him. Dooku: Jedi Lost was almost brilliant - until it attributed his fall to attachment and a sith beast on Serenno (sigh). I see Tales of the Jedi as almost an apology for the last decade of mishandling one of Star Wars' most interesting and compelling characters.

The lesson around Dooku and Anakin/Vader is that you can start a good person but can become evil if you’re good intentions lack boundaries. If you succumb to “My ends Justify my means.” Saw Guerra also teetered on that edge. What tipped Dooku and Anakin over that edge was the psychopathic master manipulator in Palpatine. He twisted Dooku’s wish to end a corrupt Republic and Anakin’s wish to make a warring galaxy stop fighting and protect those he cared about to his own evil purposes. Palpatine is arguably one or the most thoroughly evil--and dangerous-villains ever written. Powerful evil Wizard. Powerful warrior. Expert political operator without a conscience. Masterful corrupter and manipulator. Dooku fell to evil, but Palpatine kicked his legs out from under him.

Never saw him as an anti-hero to begin with, and I never agreed with people who claimed that the Separatists did nothing wrong. Dooku was fully on board with starting a galaxywide civil war, the deaths of vast numbers of people, and a serious effort to wipe out (and probably replace) the Jedi Order. He seemed genuinely surprised when Palpatine turned on him and told Anakin to kill him. The sense that I had watching that was that Dooku truly saw himself as Palpatine's successor and was shocked to learn that he was just as expendable as Maul. While Dooku was not a cackling maniac like Palpatine, he was no less evil and he most definitely was *NOT* fighting to build a better galaxy for the actual *people.* His vision of the galaxy would not have been much different than Palpatine's Empire and his replacement for the Jedi would have looked a lot like the Inquisitorious.

I feel like Dooku was a lost soul. He knew of his heritage, was saddened by the failing Jedi, broken at the loss of his friend and apprentice, and was pushed into a situation he knew there was no turning back from. Dooku did all those horrible things because he was corrupted by the dark side and knew how powerful Sideous was. Dooku felt like he had no choice if he wanted to bring change to the galaxy. Unfortunately; the dark side poisoned his way of thinking and he let it.

I think this was the point of Tales of the Jedi though, right? The Dark Side is inherently, inescapably corruptive. While the Jedi could stand to be less Orthodox, there is a reason why they're so protective against the Dark Side and stand in such uncompromising opposition to it. In Tales of the Jedi and Dooku: Jedi Lost, we see that Dooku was a good guy with valid fucking complaints about the state of the order and the Republic. And we also see very very clearly, particularly in Jedi Lost, that just by immersing himself in the Dark Side Dooku ends up betraying or forsaking EVERYTHING he was initially fighting for. That is what the Dark Side is, that is what it does. You can't take it and use it as a tool for good, because the Dark Side replaces any intentions you had going in with the desire for more power, and turns those original intentions into an excuse to get more power.

Being a Jedi" is commitment and sacrifice, Being a Sith is also commitment and sacrifice. And" you have to truly understand this! For Dooku" IT IS NEVER ABOUT KILLING!! It is sacrifice.
