Yeah Palpatine is a terribly written villain, he's just too cartoonish. I mean you simply can't get that powerful when you're that incompetent, Force or no. He actively encourages corruption in his own military so that every one will be too busy scheming against each other to challenge him, while somehow completely missing the fact that this makes him directly responsible for having incompetent troops. Palpatine was a politician, not a leader. He knew how to misdirect, but not how to lead.

Palpatine's response makes sense. Disney's new canon has the Empire is frightfully inept with very few moffs actually qualified for their positions. This is deliberate. If everyone was too busy fighting each other then they'd be too busy to challenge him. The only way to maintain control was with the Death Star.

An angry/questioning emperor scene at the start of Empire might have fitted well. In New Hope, he choke held but released a seriously confrontational officer but in Empire, even admirals and leaders who were doing their best were killed off. I always thought that there was a sharp transition of character in Vader in new hope to Vader in empire.

After the Battle of Hoth, the Rebel Alliance realized that if they create a base on any planet, a new Deathstar will finish them off, so they decided to live their life on the fleet. Sidious quickly realized that in such a case, a Deathstar is an inefficient weapon, also the Imperial Fleet - both can leave survivors behind. Using them TOGETHER is a death trap for the Rebels if he is able to control all the crew's brain - and the Battle of Endor was a tragedy for the Rebels while the Emperor was alive. After Vader had thrown him down, the Imperial Fleet lost the Executor, two other star destroyers and without the Emperor's mind coordination, they fought like rookies, so Pellaeon ordered a jump to the outer ring but only some star destroyers followed him. The remaining ones has been destroyed or occupied by the Rebels.

Palpatine for all his studies of the Sith that came before him, was a poor student of being a ruler. He lacked patience and was caught up in rash decisions that drove fracturing of his rule. Out of all the Sith that came before him, his reign was but a blink in the time scale of the galaxy. The Galaxy rose to defeat Palpatine while recognizing that the Republic was broken, to seek the next alternative. Anakin and Vader were equally useless in reading the room, let alone the Galaxy. Had Vader constructed a better suit (in waiting) and disappeared, even as far as cutting himself off from the Force, he'd have stood a better chance of overthrowing Palpatine and fixing the failures. The two Sith Lords wouldn't have lasted 50 years of rule, let alone 100 or 1000. Question. Why didn't Palpatine build a Death Star from the manufactured red crystals the Sith used for their saber, over the Kyber version?
@ToEuropa
@ToEuropa 8 ай бұрын
The Rule of Two reached its epitome with Palpatine, a creature created to overthrow the Republic, destroy the Jedi and restore the Sith to power, which he did successfully. The weakness of the Rule of Two is that it failed to produce a Sith which could maintain an empire. The purpose of the Rule of Two was to create a destroyer, not a leader. Also, the weakness of the Sith has always been their hubris. Their lust for power brings them closer to the dark side of the force, which leads them to greater power. It's a loop that feeds on itself and eventually destroys the individual and all they created when they become convinced of their invincibility and grow careless. It's the same hubris that's brought down many a tyrant throughout history.

A single Death Star actually shouldn't have been much of a resource sink for a galactic empire. The problem with these space operas is that the writers never seem to be able to grasp the full scale of space, and the resources contained in it. When you consider that any given solar system should have been able to pool enough resources to build at least one moon-sized battle station like a Death Star, and that there are billions of stars in a galaxy, an empire spanning an entire galaxy should have been capable of building literally billions of Death Stars. Perhaps a few hundred million Death Stars is more reasonable considering that they may not want to blow their entire defense budget on a single type of weapon (still need to have armies and fleets). But still, the loss of a single Death Star should not have been a significant blow to any galactic empire that actually understood the scale of the resources at their disposal.

Palpatine's arrogance was in the Death Star. While he did learn *a* lesson after the destruction of the first, he failed to learn sufficiently and his arrogance reared it's deadly head again in the second Death Star. Luke pointed out to Sidious that his arrogance was his weakness. He was victorious so many times, and in such colossal fashion, that victory ultimately defeated him.
@rickblaine9670

I think the comics got this kinda wrong. To make a LotR comparison, technological power is to Sidious what armies and military strength are to Sauron: a disposable tool next to his true power, that of the Ring, which here would be the Dark Side. To the Emperor, a military victory is insignificant next to the triumph that would have been, for instance, Luke being successfully corrupted. So I don’t think he would have been that mad for the Death Star’s destruction. He would have viewed it as more like an annoying inconvenience. I mean, the dude literally started building another one immediately afterwards. And not even for its own sake, but mainly to use it as a diversion in his plot to corrupt Luke. That speaks volumes about where his true priorities lie.

You want an interesting take that up-ends all of your assumptions while explaining everything? Palpatine was not a comic-book villain that craved power and absolute control by making a weird combination of subtle and multi-faceted decades long moves of Intrigue paired with simple moves of excess force that will obviously fail and cause backlash. Palpatine was a very intelligent man who loved the Republic. He was also well read in his histories. He may not have had the histories we are use, but reflections with different names. As such, he saw that the Republic had become an Empire in all but name and it was in decline, irrecoverable decline by this point. History shows two paths that tend to emerge. 1} The decline is allowed to complete with the conquest and fragmentation by a group interested only in spoils. Whether this was an outside force Palpatine had heard rumors of, or a group from within, the end results is the same: a very long period often called a Dark Age. The internal structures destroyed by the rioting / looting tend to take a long time to be rebuilt in the following depression. In most cases, this tends to take around 20% of the length of the original civilization. For the Republic, it could last for hundred or thousands of years. The rumours that Palpatine had heard only gave them 100 years, at the most. Option 2 sees the rise of a populist government that rapidly turns despotic. During its brief time, it burns out waste and corruption, while reigniting in the populace the principles that made the original civilization great. A rebellion grows and eventually overthrows the despotic government. A new government is formed based on the original ideals and lasts even longer. Option 2 is what Palpatine chose to create. Every step was intentional. He wanted to make an all powerful government that slowly tightened the screws. He wanted a government that was accepted by the people initially, and slowly became a thing people would die to end. As Leia pointed out, The Death Star was not an ultimate weapon for control, it was intended to unite the forces against him. Two decades and Palpatine was watching the people grow to accept his reign of tyranny. They were willing to accept the loss of their freedoms for the security the Empire provided. But Palpatine knew this was always possible, so he already had a plan. He had the Death Star. He knew that such a weapon would push a group of anti-Empire to the forefront and give them populace support. All he needed to do was finish his plan. He needed to make them look like a David fighting Goliath, back them into a corner, and then have them defeat him. This defeat would make the populace embrace their underdog and Saviour. This new group could re-establish the ideals of the Old Republic and start a new civilization that would last for thousands of years. Unfortunately, this plan might cause the death of billions of people, but it would be a small price compared to the hundreds of trillions that would die on the other path. But Palpatine needed a reliable right-hand to stay with him through his tyrannical years. He could not trust just anyone, so he had clone variants made of himself. With the variation, he was able to keep their Force Powers. One was male, and one was Female. He decided to go with the male variant and keep the female in storage. He found a backwater planet with slavery and paid a slave owner to implant one of the female slaves without her knowledge. He planted a prophecy about The One who will bring balance to the Force. The prophecy is truthful, as Palpatine plans to destroy the Jedi and balance the Sith and Jedi. It is also truthful that if Palpatine's plan works, it will save trillions of lives and usher in thousands of years of peace and growth. Years later, he contrived a situation that had Jedi get involved, before misdirecting their return not to Coruscant, but a backwater planet. He would then befriend this little slaveboy. He would then have a clone army created as he upped the already derisive internal politics. He would arrange for the female slave to die, creating a need to control things in his slaveboy clone. He would remind the clone of his solitude and that the uncaring and random universe had stolen his one attachment. Then, he would set into motion events that reveal the clone army and pair his clone with a beautiful and intelligent lady. He would make his slaveboy clone afraid of losing this attachment too. Palpatine would act as his only supportive friend. He would push his clone and the girl into dangerous situations to bond them further. He would let teenage hormones do what teenage hormones do best. Then, he would separate the offspring from his clone and kill the girl. Also, he would work in a situation to further drive a wedge between his clone and the Jedi, one that involves his clone being put into a suit. This suit will prevent people from noting how much Palpatine and the Slaveboy look alike as they finish maturing. He would make sure that the clone knows that all this heartache is caused by Jedi ideals. Thus, the clone will support the harsher organization of the Empire. He would let the offspring be secreted away on a backwoods world and pretend he has no idea. He would create events causing a leading member of the Rebellion to pass by the location of the offspring by letting secret plans to his ultimate doomsday weapon leak in that sector. He would have a pair of trusted droids escape with the plans to draw in the offspring. The offspring is still strongly a Palpatine, so his need to "do something" will be too strong of a pull. He would create a lining in the Exhaust Port that draws the non-energy components of a photon torpedo down the port and into the center. He would have the control wiring tied to the main weapon ignition system and explain it to engineering as a need for re-routing extra power during the firing sequence. As such, photon torpedoes will be expelled normally, but "sucked in" if the Death Star is prepping to fire, but when would this ever happen? He would then make the offspring a hero. He would also make himself a villain for being willing to kill billions for terror. This would ignite the rebellion. He would help the Rebellion grow stronger. He would crush them at strategic points, but always in showy ways that let it grow back stronger. He would reveal the offspring to the slaveboy. He would later have the offspring come to him. He would threaten the life of the offspring while also doing some really bad thing (maybe another Death Star?) This would push the Slaveboy clone to face his fear of losing his only connection to his only lover and revisit her death and the death of his mother. This will break years of loyalty and result in Palpatine's death. Palpatine must make sure the Slaveboy clone also dies. The offspring must be the figurehead for helping to form the new Republic. But, the Offspring must have doubts. This will keep him from grabbing the reins. Instead, the offspring will help create a new government that will be forced to deal with the remnants of the Empire. Slowly, a new generation will rise and rebuild a New Republic. A republic that will last thousands of years after a transition period of only 40ish years, instead of hundreds. Palpatine was only playing the part of a tyrannical despot to finish saving his beloved Republic. Unfortunately, there is evidence that there were plans to undermine this. This storyline did not resolve as well because of the mess of the sequels and changes to the prequels. However, evidence suggests that Palpatine was being manipulated. When his New Republic was born, a character had plans to become the Chancellor of that new organization and become a hereditary emperor. A long family dynasty, that was really just one person cheating death: Darth Plaguis ... Darth Jar-Jar. Probably the most annoying thing to Palpatine was how bad he had to be to get the populace to react. I can still imagine him reacting this way after hearing about the younglings. Even more exasperating would be the minimal reaction that would result when people heard about it. "Well, what do you expect when the Jedi keep marginalizing Sith inclined people?" Retroactively, the stored female clone is on a Star Destroyer that crashes on a desert planet and awakens her. Rey is a female clone of Palpatine and twin sister/clone of Anakin.

the ultimate weapon and the pride of his success? maybe it was back when only the first or maybe the second movie were the only star wars canon to exist, but over the years, especially starting in the 90's when so much good lore was written in books,i m pretty sure the death star was just another super weapon and for palpatine it was just another thing that solidified his control. palpatine would have been aware of many super weapons existing in the galaxy, most abandoned, some destroyed, but would also have known how useless they are on their own as every previous super weapon ever made has been. so no i dont accept the death star being his pride and joy or something like that by the time disney threw away the canon we all loved, it was only true while the first and second movies existed tbh

Interesting...Palpatine did not have the senate to control the populace through soft power...or the Death Star to control them through force. Having representatives is there to placate the masses into compliance...life imitating art? Or, is it art imitating life? As brilliant as Palpatine was, his arrogance is what caused the fall of the empire. Ironic as that is what destroyed the Jedi as well...something he'd comment on many times. Blaming Vader was just a way for Palpatine to vent his anger for his own failure; every tyrant needs a dog to beat on when things go to hell.

Well, if we take the sequel trilogy as canon, which I really, REALLY don't want to, then the answer is no. No, Palps didn't learn from his mistake... or he didn't learn from his clone's mistake? And he continued making easily destructible weapons of mass destruction.

Vader knew the Death Star was folly. Deep down he was glad that the faith and arrogance Tarkin and Sidious had in the DS had, well, blown up in their faces. Vader was right when told the Death Star commanders that the ability to destroy a planet was insignifcant next to the power of the Force. That statement really echoed Roan Shryne's dying words. Lol I agree. The first Death Star was secure enough such that only one of the galaxy’s most force sensitive man could destroy it. So what does he do, even knowing that same man is still alive? He makes a second one that doesn’t even need a force sensitive to take it down. It can be destroyed by any regular pilot. Plus the irony of “this guy who criticized the Death Star was right to criticize the Death Star. So I will be promoting him for criticizing the Death Star, but only until my new more poorly secured Death Star is completed
